Bond Characteristics of Reinforced Concrete Beams According to Material Age (콘크리트 재령에 따른 철근콘크리트 보의 부착응력에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • Reinforced concrete structure resist to external load caused by integration of steel bar and concrete and this integration is obtained from bond stress between steel bar and concrete. Researches of bond stress between steel bar and concrete have been performed by many researcher, but existent researches of bond stress are concerned with compression strength of well cured concrete and insufficient study of bond stress according to early material. The secure regular strength of concrete in early age is caused by rapid velocity of early hardening process, but questionable bond stress in early age is proportion to strength of that. So this study performed experiments to compare bond stress according to material age and compression strength. The result is showed that bonding strength in early material age compare the ratio of concrete compression strength with the ratio of maximum bond stress the later inferior on the former.

Split Tension Fatigue Characteristics Analysis of Fatigue Tests Data for Concrete Pavements (콘크리트 포장 피로실험 데이터의 쪼갬인장 피로특성)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate and analyze the fatigue test data of pavement concrete. The static strength tests were carried out to check the compressive strength, flexural strength, and split tension strength at 56 days in order to minimize strength variation effect during test. The specimens were fabricated at twelves sections at a construction site of highway. The stress level and stress ratio of fatigue test were determined from static test results. The results are as follow: The flexural strength at 28 days mostly satisfied the criterion for design, but the compressive strength at 28 days were slightly below the criterion even though it satisfied at 56 days. The fatigue limit was 2 million cycles if the specimen was not failed to that cycles. The S-N curves were developed from the fatigue test results at each stress levels and each stress ratio. Then, the fatigue life of pavement concrete at a given stress level and fatigue strength of pavement concrete could be derived from these curves. Analysis using method No.2 was more acceptable because resulting of comparison and analysis using method No.2 was presented 2 sections were presented $R^2$ < 0.7, and other 2 sections were presented 0.7 < $R^2$ < 0.8, and the others 8 sections were $R^2{\geq}0.8$.

  • Reinforced concrete column is an effective structural element to take advantage of high strength concrete. This paper presents an experimental and analytical strength of high strength concrete rectangular tied column sections under eccentric loading. The test variables are concrete strength, steel ratios, slenderness and eccentricity. The analytical results of the ACI's rectangular stress block, Zia's modified rectangular stress block, and a trapezoid block are compared with experimentally obtained data. It may be concluded that the trapezoid stress block provided the most reasonable column section capacities for high strength concrete columns.

  • Advantages of adhesively bonded joints and techniques of weight reduction have led to increasing use of structural adhesives such as LSI(large scale integration) package, automobile, aircraft in the various industries. In spite of such wide applications of adhesively bonded joints, the evaluation method of bonding strength has not been established. Stress singularity occurs at the interface edges of adhesively bonded joints and it is required to analyze it. In this paper, the stress singularity using 2-dimensional elastic boundary element method (BEM) with the changes of the lap length and adhesive for single lap joint was analyzed, and experiments of strength evaluation were carried out. As the results, the evaluating method of bonding strength considering stress singularity at interface edges of adhesively bonded joints and stress intensity factor of interface crack have been proposed in static and fatigue test.

  • Recently, application of friction welded SUH35/SUH3 is increasing in the manufacturing process of automotive engine valves For securing its reliability and a reasonable strength evaluation method, it is necessary to assess stress singularity under the residual stress condition on the friction welded interface between dissimilar materials. In this paper, strength evaluation method of friction welded materials was investigated by boundary element method and static tensile testing. An advanced method of quantitative strength evaluation for SUH35/SUH3 friction welded material is to be suggested by establishing fracture criterion by using stress singularity factors.

Laminate Tensile Failure Strength Prediction using Stress Failure Criteria

  • This paper presents a method that uses the stress failure criteria to predict the tensile failure strength of open-hole laminates with stress concentrations. The composite material used in this study corresponds to a 177 ℃ cured, carbon/epoxy unidirectional tape prepreg. The results obtained by testing ten different laminates were compared and analyzed to verify the tensile strength of the open-hole laminates predicted using the proposed stress failure criteria. The findings of this study confirm that the tensile strength predictions performed using the proposed method are generally accurate, except in cases involving highly soft laminates (10% of 0° ply).

  • Recently, the cases of using bonded dissimiliar materials which have each of the different components tend to increase for the purpose of developing new materials and using the special objects in the field of industry. Among the cases the strength evaluation of the joining materials of vehicle engine and the structural materials with ceramic/metal bonded joints becomes more important. But the residual stress occurs, because the joining of ceramics and metals is performed in extremely high temperature. It becomes a dominant cause to reduce the strength of the ceramic/metal bonded joints. In this paper, strength evaluation method of ceramic/metal bonded joints considering stress singularity was investigated by boundary element method and 4-point bending test. An advanced method of quantitative strength evaluation for ceramin/metal bonded joints is to be suggested.

Uniaxial Compression Behavior of High-Strength Concrete Confined by Low-Volumetric Ratio Lateral Ties

  • Presently, test results and stress-strain models for poorly confined high-strength columns, more specifically for columns with a tie volumetric ratio smaller than $2.0\%$, are scarce. This paper presents test results loaded in axial direction for square reinforced concrete columns confined by various volumetric ratio lateral ties including low-volumetric ratio. Test variables include concrete compressive strength, tie yield strength, tie arrangement type, and tie volumetric ratio. Local strains measured using strain gages bonded to an acryl rod. For square RC columns confined by lateral ties, the confinement effect was efficiently improved by changing tie arrangement type from Type-A to Type-B. A method to compute the stress in lateral ties at the concrete peak strength and a new stress-strain model for the confined concrete are proposed. Over a wide range of confinement parameters, the model shows good agreement with stress-strain relationships established experimentally.

Concrete Stress Block Parameters for High-Strength Concrete : Recent Developments and Their Impact

  • The use of the current ACI 318 stress block parameters has been reported to provide unconservative estimations of the moment capacities for high-strength concrete columns. Accordingly, several concrete stress block parameters have been recently proposed. This paper discusses various concrete stress block parameters for high-strength concrete and their influences on the code provisions. In order to adopt the proposed stress block parameters to the design code, it is necessary to understand the impact of the change of the stress block parameters on various aspects of the code provisions. For this purpose, the influence of using of different stress block parameters on the location of the neutral axis and the tensile strain in extreme tension steel as well as the axial and moment capacities are investigated. In addition, the influence on the prestressed concrete members is also elucididated.

  • Strength Design method for involute spur gears is developed. The developed gear strength design system can design the optimized gear that minimize the number of pinion teeth with face tooth. Method of optimization is matrix form which is developed from this study. Design variables are transmitted power, gear volume, gear ratio, allowable contact stress and allowable bending stress, etc. Gear design method developed this study can be apply to the gears of plants, machine tools, automobiles.
