Evaluation of Static Strength and Fatigue Strength for Bogie of a Korea High Speed Train Including Eddy Current Brake System (와전류 제동장치를 포함한 한국형 고속전철 대차의 정적강도 및 피로강도 평가)

  • A FEM-based analytical approach was used to evaluate the static strength and the fatigue strength of a KHST bogie including eddy current brake system. Calculation was carried out in the fields of linearity and small deformation. The yield strengths were used as criteria for evaluating the static strength and the fatigue limits were used as criteria for evaluating the fatigue strength. The analysis results show that there is not any location that exceeds the allowable criteria.

  • Torsional vibration analysis is necessary at design stage to ensure the reliability of a system particularly when the driven machine is a reciprocating compressor. This paper contains the results of torsional vibration analysis and fatigue strength evaluation for 540 kW compressor driving motor. Torsional vibration analysis showed that the $2^{nd}$ torsional mode of the entire shaft system has the possibility of resonance with the $14^{th}$ order excitation of compressor and twin line frequency of motor at operating speed. Therefore, the analyses were required to ensure the structural reliability of the motor. The fatigue strength was evaluated for the shaft and inner fans using the results of forced vibration analysis. It is concluded that the motor has sufficient fatigue strength under normal operating condition.

  • By laying its drum horizontally, front-loaded washing machine mostly used in Europe that uses the head of the water to launder was appropriate for washing only small amount of laundry. However, the demands of customers are requiring front-loaded washing machine to handle big capacity laundry as well, and have faster rotation speed to increase drying ability. To meet such demands, more stress from bending and twisting are complexly loaded onto the shaft supporting the horizontal drum, causing problems in fracture strength and fatigue life. Shafting system is mainly divided into flange and shaft. Flange is located between the drum and shaft, transferring power from the shaft to drum, and acting as a supporter of the back of the drum. Shaft is connected from the flange to insert production, transferring power from the motor to drum, and mainly acting as stiffness against the horizontal weight of the shafting system. In this paper, strength analysis and experiment were executed on both the shaft and flange of front-loaded washing machine to suggest the design improvement of shafting system for big capacity, high-rotation drying. Also, verification of this evaluation was executed on fracture strength and fatigue life for studied shaft system.

  • Development of Real-Time Quality Evaluation of Friction Welding by Acousitc Emission : Report 1 ABSTRACT : According as the friction welding has been increasingly applied in manufacturing various machine components because of its significant economic and technical advantages, one of the important concerns is the reliable quality monitoring method for a good weld quality with both joint strength and toughness in the process of its production. However no reliable nondestructive test method is available at present to determine the weld quality particularly in process of production. So this paper presents an experimental examination and quantitative analysis for the real-time evaluation of friction weld quality by acoustic emission, as a new approach which attempts finally to develop an on-line quality monitoring system design for friction welds using AE techniques. As one of the important results, it was confirmed, through this study, that AE techniques can be reliably applied to evaluating the friction weld qualify with 100% joint strength, as the cumulative AE counts occurring during welding period were quantitatively correlated with reliability at 95% confidence level to the joint strength of welds. Real-Time Evaluation of Automatic Production Quality Control for Friction Welding Machine : Report 2 Abstract : Both in-process quality control and high reliability of the weld is one of the major concerns in applying friction welding to the economical and qualified mass-production. This paper, so that, presents the experimental examinations and statistical quantitative analysis of the correlation between the initial cumulative counts of acoustic emission(AE) occurring during plastic deformation period of the welding and the tensile strength of the welded joints as well as the various welding variables, as a new approach which attempts finally to develop an on-line (or real-time) quality monitoring system and a program for the process of real-time friction welding quality evaluation by initial AE cumulative counts. As one of the important results, it was well confirmed that the initial AE cumulative counts were quantitatively and cubically correlated with reliability of 95% confidence level to the joint strength of the welds, bar-to-bar (SCM4 to SUM31, SCM4 to SUM24L) and that an AE technique using initial AE counts can be reliably applied to real-time strength evaluation of the welded joints, and that such a program of the system was well developed resulting in practical possibility of real-time quality control more than 100% joint efficiency showing good weld with no micro-structural defects.

  • High-strength plastic water supply pipe evaluation method was evaluated in this study. Up to date, high strength water supply pipes that we install are mostly ductile cast iron pipes. Sometimes, a few PVC pipes are installed. Metal pipes have rust problem on the surface, causing serious damage to metal pipes and reducing the expected life span of water piping system. Nowadays, depending on technology development, some companies have improved properties of general PVC pipe performance with remarkable properties that exceed KS and ASTM standard. Here, we suggest a new method of performance evaluation for high-strength water plastic pipes.

Structural and Fatigue Strength Evaluation of a Fairlead Chain Stopper for Floating Offshore Wind Turbines (10 MW급 부유식 해상풍력장치용 패어리드 체인스토퍼의 구조 및 피로 강도 평가)

  • In this study, a structural and fatigue strength evaluation of the Fairlead Chain Stopper (FCS) was performed as a part of the development of a disconnectable mooring system to be applied to 10MW floating offshore wind power generation systems. To estimate the load acting on the FCS, a 10 MW semi-submersible floater was designed using the 10 MW wind turbine developed by Technical University of Denmark(DTU). The minimum breaking load (MBL) of the grade R5 and 147mm mooring chain was applied for the FCS strength analysis. The fatigue load was obtained from the coupled analysis results conducted by a collaborating research institute. The structural and fatigue safety of FCS were evaluated in accordance with DNV codes. From the evaluation results, it was confirmed that the FCS satisfies the structural and fatigue safety requirements.

  • Generally, a safety estimation based on the buckling strength is carried out to evaluate the strength of plate members in the design process of ship hull structures and more accurate and efficient tool for the buckling strength estimation of enormous plate members of ship structure is naturally demended for saving design process. While, in the reason that the design codes of classification societies do not consider the various effects or include some effects roughly, considerate safe side results are suggested occasionally. In this study, advanced buckling strength estimation system prepared various classification buckling evaluation codes and new evaluation code considering the effects of in-plane tension, plate boundary condition, lateral load & residual stress is developed using the window management system of engineering workstation. Additionally maximum deflection estimation formula is equipped for the increase of fabrication reliability of thin plate ship structure. From this evaluation system, more reliable buckling safety of plate panel will be guaranteed in the ship hull design stage. In order to expand the use of this system pc version system will be developed sooner or later.

  • Nowadays, the vehicle structure weight of urban transit system has been reduced in order to save energy and materials. However, this light weighted vehicle structure is very important to verify the fatigue strength at the development stage. Bogie system consists of bogie frame, suspensions, wheel-sets, braking system and transmission system. Among these components, the bogie frame is most significant component subjected to the whole vehicle and passenger loads. In this study, the bogie frame for the standard EMU power car is evaluated to the static and fatigue strength. And, the evaluation method is used the JIS E4207 specification throughout the FEM analysis and static load test. The static and fatigue test results for the standard EMU bogie frame of power car has been appeared very safety and stable for the design load conditions.

  • This paper develops practical and realistic reliability models and methods for the evalusion of system reliability and system reliability-based rating of R.C box-girder bridge superstructures. The precise prediction of reserved carrying capacity of bridge as a system is extremely difficult expecially when the bridges are highly redundant and significantly deteriorated or damaged. This paper proposes a new approach for the evaluation of reserved system carrying capacity of bridges in terms of equivalent system-strength, which may be defined as a bridge system-strength corresponding to the system reliability of the bridge. This can be derived from an inverse process based on the concept of FOSM form of system reliability index. The strength limit state models for R.C box-girder bridges suggested in the paper are based on the basic bending and shear strength. and the system reliability problem of box-girder superstructure is formulated as parallel-series models obtained from the FMA(Failure Mode Approach) based on major failure mechanism or critical failure states of each girder. AFOSM and IST(Importance Sampling Technique) simulation algorithm is used for the reliability analysis of the proposed models.
