  • Objectives: The nigrostriatal tract (NST) connect from the substantia nigra pars compacta to the striatum. A few previous studies have reported on the NST in the Parkinson's disease using a proboblistic tractography method. However, no study has been conducted for identification of the NST using streamline DTT technique. In the current study, we used streamline DTI technique to investigate the reconstruction method and characteristics of the NST in normal subjects. Methods: Eleven healthy subjects were recruited in this study. The NST from the substantia nigra of the midbrain and the striatum of basal ganglia was reconstructed using DTI data. Fractional anisotropy, apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) values and fiber numbers of the NST were measured. Results: In all subjects, the NST between the substantia nigra of the midbrain and the striatum. Mean values for FA, ADC, and tract volume were 0.460, 0.818, and 154.3 in the right NST, and 0.485, 0.818, and 176.3 in the left NST respectively. Conclusions: we reconstructed the NRT from the substantia nigra of the midbrain and the striatum of the basal ganglia using streamline tractography method. We believe that the findings and the proposed streamline reconstruction method of this study would be useful in future researches on the NST of the human brain.

  • In this paper, a stabilized large eddy simulation technique is developed to predict turbulent flow with high Reynolds number. Streamline Upwind Petrov-Galerkin (SUPG) stabilized method and three-step technique are both implemented for the finite element formulation of Smagorinsky sub-grid scale (SGS) model. Temporal discretization is performed using three-step technique with viscous term treated implicitly. And the pressure is computed from Poisson equation derived from the incompressible condition. Then two numerical examples of turbulent flow with high Reynolds number are discussed. One is lid driven flow at Re = $10^5$ in a triangular cavity, the other is turbulent flow past a square cylinder at Re = 22000. Results show that the present technique can effectively suppress the instabilities of turbulent flow caused by traditional FEM and well predict the unsteady flow even with coarse mesh.

  • An Eulerian finite element analysis for the steady state rolling process is addressed. This analysis combines the crystal plasticity theory fur texture development as well as the continuum damage mechanics for growth of micro voids. Although an Eulerian analysis for steady state rolling has many advantages, it needs an initial assumption about the shape of control volume. However, the assumed control volume does not match the final shapes. To effectively predict the correct shape in an assumed control volume, a free surface correction algorithm and a streamline technique are introduced. Applications to plate rolling, clad rolling, and shape rolling will be given and the results will be discussed in detail.

  • Rice's monotone streamline upwind finite element method, which was proposed to treat convection-dominated flows, is applied to the linear triangular element. An alignment technique of unstructured grids with given velocity fields is used to prevent the interpolation error produced in evaluating the convection term in the upwind method. The alignment of grids is accomplished by optimizing a target function defined with the inner-product of a properly chosen side vector in the element with the velocity field. Two pure advection problems are considered to demonstrate the superiorities of the present approach in solving the convection-dominated flow on the unstructured grid. Solutions obtained with aligned grids are much closer to the exact solutions than those with initial regular grids. The capability of the present approach in predicting the appearance of the secondary vortex in the laminar confined jet impingement is shown by comparing streamlines to those produced by SIMPLE on a highly stretched grid toward the impingement plate.

  • The study of swirling flow is of technical and scientific interest because it has an internal recirculation field, and its tangential velocity is related to the curvature of streamline. The fluid flow for tubes and elbow of heat exchangers has been studied largely through experiments and numerical methods, but studies about swirling flow have been insufficient. Using the particle image velocimetry(PTV) method, this study found the time averaged velocity distribution with swirl and without swirl along longitude sections and the results appear to be physically reasonable. In addition, streamwise mean velocity distribution was compares with that of other. Furthermore, other experimental investigation was performed to study the characteristics of turbulent water flow in a horizontal circular tube by using liquid crystal. 2D PIV technique is employed for velocity measurement and liquid crystal is used for heat transfer experiments in water. Temperature visualization was made quantitatively by calibrating the colour of the liquid crystal versus temperature using various approaches.

  • A numerical technique is developed for the solution of fully developed turbulent recirculating flow in the passage of variable area using the non-orthogonal coordinate transformation. In the numerical analysis, primitive pressure-velocity finite difference equations were solved by SIMPLER algorithm with 2-equation turbulence model and algebraic stress model (ASM). QUICK scheme on the differencing of convective terms which is free from the inaccuracies of numerical diffusion has been applied to the variable grids and the results compared with those from HYBRID scheme. In order to test the effect of streamline curvatures on turbulent diffusion Lee and Choi streamline curvature correction model which has been obtained by modifying the Leschziner and Rodi's model is testes. The ASM was also employed and the results are compared to those from another turbulence model. The results show that difference of convective differencing schemes and turbulence models give significant differences in the prediction of velocity fields in the expansion region and outlet region of the combustor, however show little differences in the parallel flow region.

  • Simultaneous measurement of velocity and concentration fields in a stirred mixer flow using a combined Stereo-PIV/Planar-LIF technique is carried out. Instantaneous velocity fields and concentration fields represent the local flow characteristics. A baffle is perpendicularly attached to the Wall to remove inactive region which shows very slow dispersion. It is found that the baffle produces tip vortex and breaking the divided streamline, so that mixing efficiency could be increases significantly.

  • This paper introduces a rapid measurement technique for the stress-optic coefficient, using terahertz time-domain spectroscopy. First we propose a design combining a four-point bending device with a scanning stage to streamline the loading process. Then we detail the measurement principle and outline the signal-processing algorithm. The experiments are carried out on Al2O3, a representative ceramic material. The experimental data reveal that the refractive index of Al2O3 exhibits a linear decrease with increasing stress. This work supplies an efficient method for stress measurement rooted in the stress-optic effect.
