Operational Characteristics of Pilot Scale Plasma DeSOx-DeNOx System for Treatment of Coal-Fired Flue Gas (석탄연소 배가스 처리용 플라즈마 탈황탈질 시스템의 운전 특성)

  • Tests of pilot-scale plasma DeSOx-DeNOx system using pulsed streamer corona were carried out. The system consists of the reactor with wire-plate electrodes the $30kW_{max}$. MPC type pulse generator, and $1MW_{th}$ pulverized coal combustor as a flue gas source. $NH_3$ and $C_2H_4$ were used to enhance the removal rate. The experimental result on the removal efficiency of SOx/NOx and on the effect of the additives was presented in this paper.

  • Interaction between flames and non-thermal plasmas of DBD type has been experimentally investigated. Vigorous streamers were observed under flame conditions because of the increase of reduced field (electrical) at high temperature as well as the seeding of free electrons and ions generated inside the flame. Flame lengths were significantly shortened as the applied voltage increased on account of intense mixing by ionic winds and soot-induced flows. Flame luminosities severely decreased under plasma conditions, which means the reduction of soot, since the residence time was reduced because of the flame shortening. Temperature and major species concentrations measured by FTIR were not changed despite the plasma generation. which shows overall chemistries were not affected by non-thermal plasmas.

Influence of electrode surface conditions on breakdown field strength in pressurized $SF_{6}$ (고기압 $SF_{6}$가스에서 전극표면 상태가 절열파괴 강도에 미치는 영향)

  • The reduction in the breakdown field strength due to electrode surface roughness was calculated by applying the streamer breakdown criterion and the surface roughness factor, and measurements of static breakdown voltage for a gap with an artificial protrusion were made under the uniform field at pressures up to 4 bar in pressurized $SF_{6}$. The effect of polarity of highly stressed electrode on the breakdown field strength was also investigated. The measurements have shown that the measured breakdown levels for a protrusion located on the cathode agree with those calculated and the values measured with an identical anode protrusion are substantially higher and more scattered. This may be explained if it assumed that a high rate of production of initiatory electrons is maintained at the tip of a cathode protrusion by field emission. In practical point of view, the breakdown levels in pressurized $SF_{6}$ can be bereliably estimated from the values calculated.

  • There are a number of small scale application fields of ozone, such as food conservation and/or storage in refrigerators, containers and storage rooms, deodorization in the production and living areas, protection against biohazards, bleaching of fabrics, etc. For these applications, miniaturization, ozone controllability and costdown of the ozonizer are the most essential points, whereas power efficiency is the most imporant factor in the case of a large scale ozonizer used in various industrial applications. It has been developed a novel sawtooth-to-cylinder type micro-ozonizer meeting above the three points by using a negative pulse corona discharge. As a result of the observations of pulse coronas affecting ozone generation, it is found that the maximum ozone concentration is generated at the pulse streamer coronas in both positive and negative case. The ozone concentration (20ppm/2l/min) generated by the negative pulse corona is about 2 times higher than that of the positive pulse corona, and could be controllable linearly by adjusting the dc input voltage of the [supply-inth ] cinventional small scale ozonizers. As a result, the present ozonizer is also very good to be used as a micro-ozonizer.

  • In this paper, the theoritical breakdown characteristics of $N_2$and $SF_{6}$ in uniform field are studied by streamer criterion and the effective ionisation coefficients. Evaluation of the breakdown voltage for $N_2$and $SF_{6}$ has been done over following ranges: $N_2$: 100.0 $\leq$pd$\leq$10000.0(Torr cm) $SF_{6}$: 100.0$\leq$pd$\leq$6000.0(Torr cm) Computed values are compared with those of experiment. The results show a good agreement between the computed and the experimental values.

  • In removing the flue-gas using electrical discharge method, it is important to dissociate or ionize the atoms and molecules by the collisions with energetic electrons and it produces the radicals that are used to decompose the pollutants. For that purpose, a bidirectional pulsed voltage is used to produce lots of energetic electrons efficiently and increase the power efficiency. The simulation is performed with changing the pulsewidth under the fixed applied voltage. The particle-mesh model coupling the NGP(nearest-grid-point) to FEM(finite element method) is used to simulate the behavior of electrons and the spatio-temporal variation of the electric field for the streamer in discharge tube.

  • A comparative investigation of an experimental and a simulation of chemical kinetics for NOx removal from dielectric barrier discharges is presented. Several types of dielectric barrier discharges were implemented depending upon the configuration of electrodes. The simulation was based on an approximate mathematical model for plasma cleaning of waste gas. The influence of non uniform distributions of species due to the production of primary active particles in the streamer channel was taken into account. A comparison of observed experimental to the calculated removal efficiency of NOx showed acceptable agreement.

  • Deep Interests have been paid on the application of non-thermal plasma technique to solve the environmental pollution problems. $CO_2$ is one of the severe pollutants which cause the acid rain and global warming. In this study, in order to improve the conversion efficiency of $CO_2$, the streamer corona discharge plasma and barrier discharge plasma reactors were made, and the conversion characteristics of $CO_2$ by the corona discharge plasma and some discharge characteristics of these discharge chambers are studied experimentally.

  • In these days $SF_6$ mixtures and alternative gas has been studied because of global warming. so although many studies have been carried out about binary gas mixtures with $SF_6$, few studies were presented about breakdown characteristics of $SF_6/N_2$ mixtures. In this paper, breakdown experiment values and breakdown simulation value are compared. Streamer theory was used for predicting breakdown voltage. For accurate simulation, this simulation apply utilization factor using CST program. AC breakdown experiments in non-uniform field was performed to compare with the breakdown simulation values. But with gap lengths increasing, the breakdown voltage is saturated. So simulation need surface roughness factor.

  • This paper presents the results of laboratory experimentals to remove $SO_2$ and $NO_x$ by a pulsed corona discharge in the wire-plate reactor. A rotating spark gap switch was used to generate the pulse by chewing the dc high voltage. Repetition frequency of the pulse was 60Hz and rising time of 50ns. The photo pictures of positive streamer corona taken by ICCD camera, pulse voltage and current were measured using a digital oscilloscope. Simultaneous effects of $C_{2}H_{4}$ injection and heterogeneous chemical reactions on nonthermal plasma process to remove $SO_2$ and $NO_x$ from flue gas were investigated in the present study
