  • Some selected hydraulic characteristics including the average velocitv, geometry of the channel cross-section, and water temperature, and sediment-characteristics including suspended sediment concentration , and the size distributions of suspended and bed-sediments were collected at two measuring stations in the Cheongmi-Stream during a flood period. The river bed investigated for this study is composed completely of sands, and it can be considered a typical alluvial channel. The major results obtained from the analysis of the date collected are as follows: 1) Only during floods, a substantial sediment transport occurs in the river; 2) The stage-discharge relations are changed frequently, especially for low flows; 3) The friction in the flow increases with an increase in the flow discharge; 4) Slits and clays are dominant in suspended sediments during normal flows, while sands are dominant during floods; 5) The vertical distributions of the flow velocity and suspended sediment concentration can be described, respectively, by Prandt1-von Karman's log-law and Rouse's exponential law. It is judged that the above results are commonly adapted for other alluvial rivers, although they were obtained from a limited number of data collected from a specific river reach.

  • Pyrite contained in wasted ore dumps induces a strong acid environment when it contacts oxygenated rainfall. Present research was designed to evaluate the pollution of an area that is supposedly contaminated by pyrite of ore wasted dumps form in Chonju Il Mine. Measured are the pH and selected heavy metal elements in the supposedly polluted hydrologic system. The samples include three types : those collected from the stream waters; those from the stream sediments; and those from the rice field soil scattered over the area. The dispersion path of the pollution source was also traced. The pH of the hydrologic system ranged from 3.44 to 5.46, which clearly indicates that the area is on the acid environment. The pH tends to rise as the distance from the minehead increases. The content of heavy metal elements dissolved in the stream water varies as follows; Mn=69.73~1.99ppm, Cd=0.02~0.03ppm, Zn=0.77~1.18ppm, Cu=0.04~0.13ppm, Pb=0.22~0.32ppm. The stream water in this state may induce serious heavy metal pollution to the agricultural land and the water for human life especially in the villages down the stream. The content of heavy metal elements dissolved in the stream sediment varies as follows; Mn=245.0~4685.0ppm, Cd=10.0~15.0ppm, Zn=105.0~210.0ppm, Cu=65.0~155.0ppm, Pb=90.0~150.0ppm. The content of heavy metal elements dissolved in the rice field soil varies as follows; Mn=185.0~260.0ppm, Cd=10.0~15.0ppm, Zn=135.0~180.0ppm, Cu=65.0~90.0ppm, Pb=100.0~130.0ppm. The pollution index in the stream sediment and the rice field sell is 1.36~2.03, which shows that pollution had already begun all over the area where the samples were collected.

  • In this study, classification of streams was conducted for Ji Stream, a tributary to the Geum River and Yo Stream, a tributary to the Seomjin River, and in addition, channel evolution model to the same streams was applied. The classification approaches suggested by Rosgen and Korea Institute of Construction Technology (KICT) were conducted. The channel evolution model suggested by Schumm et al. (1984) was applied. Based on the application results of Rosgen approach, Ji Stream and Yo stream show the characteristics of mountainous stream with pebbles. The application results of channel evolution model indicated that the current condition of Ji Stream and Yo Stream is a state of equilibrium, balancing the sediment supply and sediment transport capacity. The results of this study can be used as a fundamental data for water control project, river restoration and appropriate channel planning.

  • A feasibility of using Particle Entrainment Simulator (PES) to evaluate model variables describing sediment entrainment in a river system was investigated. PES in a laboratory was utilized to simulate the sediment resuspension phenomenon in the river and the subsequent relationship between shear rate and sediment entrainment was developed. The total suspended solids (TSS) data from PES was incorporated into statistical models in an effort to describe behaviors of net particle movement in the river. PES was found to be adequate for simulating particle entrainment phenomenon in a river system. Statistical analysis was used to assess propriety of PES data for predictive purposes. The results showed good relationships between PES results and system variables, such as average stream velocity and net particle movement.

  • In this study, SWAT model was applied to the Soyang Dam upstream watershed in order to evaluate the model applicability for estimating runoff, sediment, and nutrients loadings from the watershed. By trial and error method, the model parameters related with runoff, sediment, nitrogen and phosphorus were calibrated step by step. Then the simulated runoff, sediment, and nutrients loadings by the model were compared with the observed data measured at the Soyang Dam, the outlet of the watershed. And several statistical criteria were calculated to evaluate the model performance. From the comparison and statistical criteria, good agreement between simulated and observed stream flows was found. For sediment and nutrients, it was not reliable to quantitatively model the observed values, but the model could simulate the trend with reasonable accuracy. Hence, it was concluded that the model can be applied for the long-term non-point modeling in a large watershed.

  • In this study, water protection reservoir is selected as the target which is located at the estuary of Taehwa river to analyze and examine the effects of hydraulic structure on river environment. This study aims at the definition of factors which cause the change of ecological environment of river due to the effects of the sediment protection reservoir, and the proposal of the direction of environmental friendly river space development through the analysis and examination of stream variation conditions and riverbed variation characteristics among many effects of hydraulic structure on river environment before and after removal of the sediment protection reservoir when design flow is yielded. Firstly, in case of removal the existing sediment protection reservoir, the hydraulic variation characteristics like depth drop due to removal of the sediment protection reservoir are thought of little because it is examined that depths drop with about 0.01m and 0.01~0.56m when low flow is yielded and design flood yielded, respectively. Nextly, as the examination result of the variation characteristics of flow velocity in case of removal the existing sediment protection reservoir, it is thought that the concern about riverbed erosion is not serious according to the analyzed result as the mean velocity of the channel section where the velocity varies in case of removal the sediment protection reservoir is about 0.07~1.36m/s when low flow is yielded, and is about 1.02~2.41m/s when design flood is yielded despite riverbed erosion is concerned as it is examined that flow velocity is getting increase as about 0.01m/s when low flow is yielded and about 0.01~0.44m/s when design flood is yielded. Lastly, from the prediction result of riverbed variation for each flow amount condition before and after removal the sediment protection reservoir, it is known that the variation range of riverbed is nearly constant when flow amount of the channel exceeds a specific limit as it is analyzed that the more flow amount, the more erosion and sediment in the channel section of down stream part of the sediment protection reservoir and the sediment protection reservoir~Samho-gyo, and the variation ranges according to flow amount between flood condition and design flood condition have little difference in the channel section of the upstream of Samho-gyo.

  • We investigated the contamination and behavior of heavy metals in stream sediments within the watershed of Juam Reservoir. Many abandoned mines within the reservoir can act as a potential contaminant source for water quality. Heavy metal concentrations (Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn) in stream sediments from watershed are very low, indicating that content of heavy metals in the sediments probably do not affect the water quality in Juam Reservoir. However Pb concentration in the stream sediments increases downward streams, suggesting the possible diffusion of Pb contamination. According to the leaching ratio for stream sediments at a strong acidic condition in the abandoned mine areas, the relative mobility for metals decreases in the order of Pb>Zn=Cu>Ni>Cr, indicating that Pb can have a bad effect upon the water quality in Jum Reservoir. Moreover, if contaminated sediment is placed in the bottom of reservoir (i.e., reducing condition), the relative mobility of Pb is the highest, indicating that Pb in the bottom sediments can be leached to water at interface between water and sediment with changing in physicochemical conditions.

  • This study is an analysis on gravel and sand of sand-gravel bar that stretches variously in the Duchon stream basin, which is one of Hong-Cheon River(a well-developed sand-gravel bar in upstream river)'s upper stream basin. The purpose of this study was to understand the characteristic of the stream's topographic development that variously occur in the small basin by comparing the differences between the aspects of development and the sediment of sand-gravel bar in each section and by examining the transition of sediments moving from upstream to downstream. Through the analysis on the roundness and flatness of gravel, we observed an irregular trend following the increase in supply of granite gravel and gneiss gravel as we traveled downstream. As for the aspect of change in sand's grain size, the overall ratio of medium-coarse sand was very high, but the results showed no big difference in the change following the inflow of stream from the main stream section to the gneiss and granite zone.
