Die-Speed Optimization in Titanium-Disk Near-Net Shape Hot-Forging (티타늄디스크 근사정형 열간단조시 금형속도의 최적화)

  • Titanium 6242(.alpha. + .betha.) alloy has a good strength/weight ratio and is used for aircraft components such as engine disks and compressor blades. When this material is forged at an elevated temperature, the process parameters should be carefully controlled because the process window of this material is quite narrow. In the present investigation, a rigid-thermoviscoplastic finite element method is used to predict the deformation behavior and temperature/strain distributions in an engine disk during near-net shape hot forging. The purpose of the investigation is to obtain a proper ram speed profile, assuming the hydraulic press used in the forging is capable of varying ram speed during loading. In result, it was found that the ram speed at constant strain-rate of 0.5/sec shows a sound deformation behavior, a relatively uniform deformation and a good temperature distribution. This information is also valuable in predicting resulting microstructures in the disk.

  • Process design in superplastic forming to produce a Nickel-base jet engine disk has been carried out using the rigid-viscoplastic finite element method. This study aims at deriving systematic procedures in forging of superalloy engine disk, and develops a simple scheme to control strainrate within a range of superplastic deformation during the forging operation. The new process, a pancake type preform being used, is designed to have less manufacturing time, and more even distribution of effective strain in the final product, while the conventional superplastic forging of an engine disk has been produced from a cylindrical billet. The jet engine company, Pratt & Whitney, provided the basic information on the manufacturing process of superplastic forging of a jet engine disk.

Plastic Deformation Behavior of Al-Mg-Si Alloys at the Elevated Temperatures (Al-Mg-Si 합금의 고온 소성 변형 거동)

  • Thermomechanical behavior of Al-Mg-Si alloys was studied to investigate the effect of microstructural features such as pre-existing substructure and distribution of particles on the deformation characteristics. The controlled compression tests were carried out to get the information on how the alloy responds to temperature, strain amount and strain rate. Then hot forging of Al-Mg-Si alloys carried out and analyzed by the comparison with the compression tests. Microstructural features after forging were discussed in terms of the thermomechanical response of Al-Mg-Si alloys. As already well mentioned, we found that the deformation of Al-Mg-Si at the elevated temperature brought the recovered structure on most conditions. In a certain time, however, abnormally large grains were found as a result of deformation assisted grain growth, which means that hot forging of Al-Mg-Si alloys could lead to a undesirable microstructural variation and the consequent mechanical properties such as fatigue strength.

  • Welded joint generally has heterogeneity of strength, material, and fracture toughness and it is important to understand the characteristics of material strength and fracture of welded joint considering heterogeneous effect. Characteristics of strength and fracture of an undermatched joint under dynamic loading was studied by round-bar tension tests and thermal elastic-plastic analyses in this paper. The strength and fracture of the undermatched joints should be evaluated based on the effects of the strain rate and the temperature including temperature rise during the dynamic loading. The differences of fracture characteristics like such as ductile-to-brittle transition behavior are well precisely explained from the stress-strain distribution obtained by numerical analysis.

  • In Semi-Solid Forging, it is necessary to control the forming variables accurately in order to make near-net-shape products. Generally, the defects of products may occur due to liquid segregation which can be caused by the degree of deformation and strain rate, and condition of friction in Semi-Solid Forging, where the segregation is to be predicted by flow analysis. This paper presents the feasibility of theoretical analysis model using the new yield function for compressible P/M materials which is proposed by Doraivelu et at. to the flow analysis of the semi-solid dendritic Sn-15%Pb alloys instead of adopting the yield criterion of Shima and Oyane which is used by Charreyron and Flemings. The simple compression process is taken into consideration as the model to confirm the usefulness of the adopted yield function. The distribution of the liquid fraction at various strains and strain rates in radial direction, and the influence of friction are estimated by upper-bound method.

  • The metal forming behavior and defect formation in Ti-6Al-4V tube during hot backward extrusion were investigated. Dynamic material model(DMM) including Ziegler's instability criterion was employed to predict the forming defects such as shear band, inner and/or surface cracks. This approach was coupled to the internal variables generated from FE analysis. The simulation results fur the backward extrusion were compared with the experimental observation. The chilling effect and friction indicated a great influence on the deformation mode of the tube and the formation of surface cracks. The formation of forming defects in the extruded tube was attributed to non-uniform distribution of strain, strain rate and temperatures in the extruded tubes for the given test conditions.

  • Recently, atmospheric contaminations has become worse due to the increased number of automobile. The PCV (Positive Crankcase Ventilation) valve acts as a flow control to allow re-combustion of blow-by gas by having it flow from a crankcase to an inlet manifold suction tube. Also, during the fabrication of the PCV valve, micro cracks may occur in the valve body and be extended under operation. The excessive stress distribution and crack initiation on the PCV valve body would bring an unstable blow-by gas flow rate control and would cause valve failure. The purpose of this study is to examine the crack affects on the stress and strain variations on the PCV valve according to the inlet and outlet manifold under differential pressures. From the results, we can explain the behavior of the crack extension for a safe condition of PCV valve.

Assessment of Hot Deformation and Grain Size Distribution in a Udimet 720Li Pancake (Udimet 720Li 합금의 고온변형 및 결정립분포 예측)

  • Hot deformation behavior of Udiment720Li was characterized by compression tests in the temperature range of 10$25^{\circ}C$ to 115$0^{\circ}C$ and the strain rate range of $0.0005 s^{-1};to;5 s^{-1}$. The combination of dynamic material model (DMM) and Ziegler's instability criterion was applied to predict an optimum condition and unstable regions for hot forming. A dynamic recrystallization model coupled with FEM results was used to interpret the evolution of microstructures. In order to verify the reliability of the present coupled model, isothermal forging was performed in the temperature range 1050~115$0^{\circ}C$ at strain rates of $0.05 s^{-1};and;0.005 s^{-1}$. The present model was successfully applied to the hot forming process of Udimet720Li.

  • The effect of alloying elements, precipitate size, its distribution, and dislocation substructure resulted from warm rolling or cold rolling in the superplastic Al-Mg alloy system was investigated. One of the major requirements for fine structure superplasticity is that the grain size should be very small. Fine grain structure is controlled by the dislocation substructure and the dynamic recrystallization during hot or warm working. The recovery of Al-Mg base alloys was constrained resulting in relatively high dislocation density when the alloys were warm rolled. In particular, Al-Mg-Zr alloy exhibited the smallest sub-grain size among Al-Mg alloys containing Mn, Cu, Zr as a third element. The Al-Mg-Mn alloy cold rolled 80% after hot rolling showed the maximun strain rate sensitivity exponent, m, of 0.75 under strain rate of $7.1{\times}10^{-4}/s$ at $500^{\circ}C$. The elongation of the alloys was limited in spite of high m values due to large dispersoids containing appreciable amount of Fe impurities.

  • To reduce the storage space of spent fuels used at the atomic power plants all over the world, the uranium elements contained in the spent fuels is being extracted and effectively stored. For this, the spent fuel are oxidized and deoxidized. In this study, it is produced conceptual design specification about the spent fuel management technology research and test facilities have been produced. The first considered processes in the facilities is the metal conversion furnace in the dry environment. Since this process is operates at the high temperature range, we have to consider heat-resisting designs for the device. For the heat-resisting designs, we have surveyed and analyzed technical references for material properties. Also, we have determined the temperature distribution condition of the device based on experimental results. We have calculated thermal stress and strain of each devices by the commercial analysis software, I-DEAS. By using the results, we have analyzed design configurations of the point at issue by thermal effects, and suggested alternative design configurations. It is experimented for inspecting confidence rate of heat strain. Based on these results, necessary design specifications for heat-resisting design have been produced.
