  • This paper presents a unified approach to multiple nominative and accusative constructions in Korean. We identify 16 semantic relations holding between two consecutive noun phrases (NPs) in multiple case marking constructions, and propose each semantic relation as a licensing condition on double case marking. We argue that the multiple case marking constructions are merely the sequences of double case marking, which are formed by dextrosinistrally sequencing the pairs of the same-case marked NPs of same or different type. Some appealing consequences of this proposal include a new comprehensive classification of the sequences of same-case NPs and a straightforward account of some long standing problems such as how the additional same-case NPs are licensed, and in what respects the multiple nominative marking and the multiple accusative marking are alike and different from each other.

  • In real structures, multi-spot welded joints are more frequently used than a single-spot welded joint. Most researches, however, have been focused to a single-spot welded joint until now. In this paper, the fatigue behavior of multi-spot welded joints are investigated using the finite element solutions of the multi-spot welded specimens. The local strain approach is used rather than the stress intensity factor approach to estimate the fatigue life since the former is quite simple and straightforward. It is found that the fatigue behavior of multi-spot welded joints is different from that of single-spot welded joints. The local strain approach is still applicable to multi-spot welded joints.

  • An automatic design system for a hydraulic gate has been developed to cut down the time for the design calculation and to optimize its design. It is oriented to the radial gate which is the simplest, most reliable, least expensive and most widely used hydraulic gate. This system is composed of data input, strength computation and result display modules with databases of the properties of components and materials. In this development, the existing intricate design procedure has been changed to the straightforward procedure without assumption of weight. With this code, the design time of the radial gate could be reduced below one thirtieth in comparison with manual work and the optimum design could be accomplished easily.

  • This paper proposes the direct detection method of phase angle for the power source, which is based on the PLL method. The proposed method using a bidirectional photo-coupler is used to directly detect the zero crossing of phase voltage and calculate the angular frequency in the controller based on a M/T algorithm. Through the method, the additional installation space in the traditional method using a potential transformer can be minimized and it can be easy to design. The paper presents straightforward schematic circuits, design and experimental results.

  • This article outlines the capabilities of a viewer component called GridViewer, and proves its reusability. GridViewer was designed for the construction of the image display part of GIS or remote sensing application software, and consequently it is particularly straightforward to closely couple GridViewer with access to very large images. Displaying is performed through pyramid structure, which enables to treat very large dataset up to several gigabytes in size under the limited capability of PC. GridViewer is free from responsibility to handle various formats of raster data files by taking grid coverage, which is designed by OGC to promote interoperability between implementations done by data vendors and software vendors providing analysis and grid processing implementations. GridViewer differs from other such viewer by allowing for clients to extend its function and capability by using small set of methods originally implemented in it. We show its reusability and expandability by applying it in developing application programs performing various functions not supported originally by the GridViewer COM component.

  • Due to the fact that the composition and variability of aerosols is considered rather complex, it is difficult to employ a simple and straightforward physical model in calculating the aerosol size distribution in the absence of actual data. This complicates the already difficult retrieval of various atmospheric parameters from remotely sensed data. Thus, the main purpose of this study is trying to find an effective aerosol size coefficient that is stable, and can depict the particle size distribution. This paper also attempts to construct an 'effective aerosol size coefficient' database for each respective season, where it can quickly and effectively supply pertinent information of the atmosphere's opacity.

  • For modeling skewed semicircular data, we derive new family of the exponential distributions. We extend it to the l-axial exponential distribution by a transformation for modeling any arc of arbitrary length. It is straightforward to generate samples from the f-axial exponential distribution. Asymptotic result reveals two things. The first is that linear exponential distribution can be used to approximate the l-axial exponential distribution. The second is that the l-axial exponential distribution has the asymptotic memoryless property though it doesn't have strict memoryless property. Some trigonometric moments are also derived in closed forms. Maximum likelihood estimation is adopted to estimate model parameters. Some hypotheses tests and confidence intervals are also developed. The Kolmogorov-Smirnov test is adopted for goodness of fit test of the l-axial exponential distribution. We finally obtain a bivariate version of two kinds of the l-axial exponential distributions.

  • Recent progress of technology permits us to assess ventricular function and wall motion as well as myocardial perfusion using electrocardiographic gated myocardial perfusion single photon emission computed tomography (GM-SPECT). It is interesting that echocardiography and magnetic resonance imaging are moving in the same direction with the use of contrast medium to assess myocardial perfusion. A valid fundamental basis for a new technology is essential for a successful competition. Lee et al. report in this issue the reproducibility of serial measurement of left ventricular function including systolic wall thickening using a novel statistical method. It has important implications such as nitroglycerin or dobutamine application during GM-SPECT. The field of nuclear cardiology must continue to strive toward more sophisticated but straightforward evaluation of cardiac diseases.

Samples of orientations are used to demonstrate the proposed model.

  • A series of oligonucleotides were synthesized by automatic DNA synthesizer. The purity of crude products was checked and their molecular weights determined by matrix assisted laser desorption ionization mass spectrometry (MALDI-MS) with an accuracy of better than 0.05% deviation even without using an internal standard. This mass determining technology in combination with partial digestion of oligonucleotides by 5'- and 3'-exonuclease provides a straightforward and simple method to obtain sequence information of oligonucleotides. The extension of this technology to the sequencing of modified oligonucleotides and genomic DNA and RNA might become possible.
