  • In this study a structure with viscoelastic and viscous dampers with identical damping coefficient subjected to stationary seismic and wind load were analyzed in time and frequency-domain to compare motion control capability of viscous and viscoelastic dampers. The dampers were placed based on story drift and acceleration obtained from RMS responses. According to the analysis results, the motion control capability of viscous dampers turned out to be superior to that of the viscoelastic dampers for the case of seismic load. On the contrary, in case of wind load, the viscoelastic dampers were more effective in the mitigation of dynamic responses. However, it was also found that the differences were in a narrow margin.

  • In this study, the seismic performance of connections between filled composite beam (CG beams) and forming angle composite (FAC) column was experimentally evaluated. First, the bending tests were conducted on two CG beams and the axial tests were conducted on two FAC columns. Then, based on these preliminary test results, the cyclic loading test were performed on two interior connections between CG beam and FAC column. The main difference of two specimens is the plate shape of the CG beam. The test results showed that both specimens achieved the maximum story drift capacity over 0.04 radian which is required for special moment frame.

  • From the development of residential flat plate system, continuously bended shear reinforcements were applied in the joint performance test. The testing parameters are shear reinforcement types, which are no reinforcement, studrail reinforcement, and rebar type reinforcement. To verify the lateral resisting capacity, cyclic load is applied in the constant vertical load condition. From the test results, the resisting capacity of developed shear reinforcement system has a good performance behavior in the story drift ratio.

  • The purpose of this study is to model the seismic behavior of Welded Unreinforced Flange and Bolted (WUF-B) connections with post-Northridge details and evaluate the system performance of the builidings with WUF-B connections. For this purpose, based on test results, mathematical model of the connections were developed and compared with test results. This connection model take into account both panel zone deformation and connection fractures. Then, SAC Phase II 3 and 9-story buildings were modeled using the connection model developed in this study. From nonlinear static pushover analysis of the buildings, maximum strength, maximum roof drift, and so forth are investigated for the buildings with post-Northridge details. Analysis results were compared with those of buildings with pre-Northridge details and ductile connections with no fractures.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the response characteristics of pushover analysis of upper wall-lower frame system with X and Y-directions' lateral load Pushover analysis estimates initial elastic stiffness, post-yielding stiffness, and plastic hinges on each story of structures through three-dimensional nonlinear analysis program. The conclusions of this study are as follows; (1) As a result of pushover analysis, the magnitude of nonlinear response and distribution of yield hinge in lower structure are similar with both X and Y directions, but not in upper structure because of different relative stiffness. (2) The maximum drift ratio of roof is larger for X-direction than for Y-direction with respect to magnitude of shear wall areas in upper structure.

  • The seismic overstrength factor $\Omega$ is evaluated for 4-story reinforced concrete buildings in Korea(of which seismic intensity is low). The study model is designed according to aseismic guideline research - phase II in Korea. The effect of variation of span length and bay number, dead load is considered, especially including the variation of hardening ration after yielding. And push-over analysis is performed, in which the external and internal frame is connected by rigid-link and the $\Omega$ is calculated using the roof drift ratio at 2%. For Zone I, the mean value of $\Omega$ is ranged form 2.3 to 2.5, For Zone II, from 3.1 to 3.4. For low hardening ratio(3%) after yielding, $\Omega$ has little relations with the number of bay, like as the results of other research. But for 5% hardening ratio, $\Omega$ is increased as the number of bay is increased. Within general gravity-load bound, the variation of D.L. has variation of D. L. has no effect on $\Omega$. And, $\Omega$ is increased as the span length is increased.

  • The influence of masonry infills with eccentric openings on the seismic performance of reinforced concrete (r/c) frames that were designed in accordance with current code provisions are investigated. Eight 1/3-scale, single-story, single-bay frame specimens were tested under cyclic horizontal loading up to a drift level of 4%. In all examined cases the shear strength of columns was higher than the cracking shear strength of solid infill. The parameters investigated include the shape and the location of the opening. Assessment of the behavior of the frames is also attempted, based on the observed failure modes, strength, stiffness, ductility, energy dissipation capacity and degradation from cycling loading. Based on these results there can be deduced that masonry infills with eccentrically located openings has been proven to be beneficial to the seismic capacity of the bare r/c frames in terms of strength, stiffness, ductility and energy dissipation. The location of the opening must be as near to the edge of the infill as possible in order to provide an improvement in the performance of the infilled frame.

  • This paper presents a brief overview of the recently developed performance-control method of moment frame design subjected to monotonously increasing lateral loading. The final product of any elastic-plastic analysis is a nonlinear loaddisplacement diagram associated with a progressive failure mechanism, which may or may not be as desirable as expected. Analytically derived failure mechanisms may include such undesirable features as soft story failure, partial failure modes, overcollapse, etc. The problem is compounded if any kind of performance control, e.g., drift optimization, material savings or integrity assessment is also involved. However, there is no reason why the process can not be reversed by first selecting a desirable collapse mechanism, then working backwards to select members that would lead to the desired outcome. This article provides an overview of the newly developed Performance control methodology of design for lateral resisting frameworks with a view towards integrity control and prevention of premature failure due to propagation of plasticity and progressive P-delta effects.
