The objectives of this study Is to evaluate the total runoff yield, peak flow and peak flow travel time depending on the urbanization, return period and rainfall patterns at the downstream of Manchon urban watershed in TaeGu City. SWM(Storm Water Management Model) is used for runog analysis based on 5 different steps of urbanization and 4 different types of Hufrs quartile according to 8 return periods. It is analyzed that the order of total runoff yield according to raiun patterns is Huffs 4, Huffs 2. Huffs 3 and Huffs 1 quartile, that of peak flow magnitude is Huffs 2, Huffs 1, Huffs 4 and Huffs 3 quartile at present development ratio. under the 60, 70, 80 and 90ft of urbanization to the 50% of urbanization by means of the rainfall patterns, the mean Increasing ratio of total runoff yield for each case is 4.55, 11.43, 16.07 and 20.02%, that of peak flow is 5.82, 13.61, 17.15 and 18.83%, the mean decreasing ratio of peak flow travel time Is 0.00, 2.44, 5.07 and 6.26%, the mean increasing ratio of runoff depth Is 4.51, 11.42, 16.02 and 20.05% respectively. the mean increasing ratio of total runoff yield by means of each and 19.71%. Therefore, as the result of this study. it can be used for principal data as to storm sewage treatment and flood damage protection planning in urban small watershed.
To investigate the streamflow impact of land cover changes by a typhoon, WMS HEC-1 storm runoff model was applied by using land cover information before and after the typhoon. The model was calibrated with three storm events of 1985 to 1988 based on 1985 land cover condition for a 192.7 $km^2$ watershed in northeast coast of South Korea. After the model was tested, it was run to estimate impacts of land cover change by the typhoon RUSA occurred in 2002 (31 August - 1 September) with 897.5 mm rainfall. The land covers before and after the typhoon were prepared using Landsat 7 ETM+ of September 11 of 2000 and Landsat 5 TM of September 29 of 2002 respectively. For the 6.9 $km^2$ damaged area (3.6 % of the watershed), the peak runoff and total runoff by the changed land cover condition increased 12.5 % and 12.7 % for 50 years rainfall frequency and 1.4 % and 1.8 % for 500 years rainfall frequency respectively based on AMC (Antecedent Moisture Condition)-I condition.
Where no records are available at a site, a preliminary estimate may be made from relations between floods and catchment chatacteristics. A number of these chatacteristics were chosen for testing and were measured for those catchments where mean annual flood estimates were available. Although the improvement using extended data in regression of flood estimates on catchment characteristics was small, this may be due to the limitations of the regression model. When an individual short term record is to be extended, more detailed attention can be given; an example is presented of the technique which should be adopted in practice, particularly when a short term record covers a period which is known to be biassed. A method of extending the peaks over a threshold series is presented with a numerical example. The extension of records directly from rainfall by means of a conceptual model is discussed, although the application of such methods is likely to be limited by lack of recording raingauge information. Methods of combining information from various sources are discussed in terms of information from catchment characteristics supplemented by records. but are generally applicable to different sources of information. The application of this technique to estimating the probable maximum flood requires more conservative assumptions about the antecedent condition, storm profile and unit hydrograph. It is suggested that the profile and catchment wetness index at the start of the design duration should be based on the assumption that the estimated maximum rainfall occurs in all durations centered on the storm peak.

Urban flooding with surcharges in sewer system was investigated because of unexpected torrential storm events these days, causing significant amounts of human and economic damages. Although there are limitations in forecasting and preventing natural disasters, integrated urban flooding management system using the SWMM(Storm Water Management Model) engine and Web technology will be an effective tool in securing safety in operating rubber-tired transportation system. In this study, the study area, located in Chuncheon, Kangwon province, was selected to evaluate the applicability of the SWMM model in forecasting urban flooding due to surcharges in sewer system The catchment are 21.10 ha in size and the average slope is 2% in lower flat areas. Information of subcatchment, conjunctions, and conduits was used as the SWMM interface to model surface runoff generation, water distribution through the sewer system and amount of water overflow. Through this study, the applicability of the SWMM for urban flooding forecasting was investigated and probability distribution of storm events module was developed to facilitate urban flooding prediction with forecasted rainfall amounts. In addition, this result can be used to the establishment of disaster management system for rainfall safety of rubber-tired tram in the future.
To investigate the streamflow impact of land cover changes by a typhoon, HEC-l storm runoff model was applied by using land cover information before and after the typhoon. The model was calibrated with three storm events of 1985 to 1988 based on 1985 land cover condition for a $192.7km^{2}$ watershed in northeast coast of South Korea. After the model was tested, it was run to estimate impacts of land cover change by the typhoon RUSA occurred in 2002 (31 August-1 September) with 897.5 mm rainfall. The land covers before and after the typhoon were prepared using Landsat 7 ETM+ of September 11 of 2000 and Landsat 5 TM of September 29 of 2002 respectively. For the $6.9km^{2}$ damaged area (3.6 % of the watershed), the peak runoff and total runoff by the changed land cover condition increased 12.5 % and 12.7 % for 50 years rainfall frequency and 1.4 % and 1.8 % for 500 years rainfall frequency respectively based on AMC (Antecedent Moisture Condition)-I condition.
Stormwater pipe systems are most commonly used to discharge rainwater from the urban catchment covered by the impervious area. To design stormwater pipe and rainwater pumping station, frequency analysis is implemented using historical rainfall and the design rainfall is timely distributed using theoretical shape such as Huff distribution. This method cannot consider the rainfall intensity variation caused by climate change which is type of uncertainty. Therefore, in this study, runoff from Gasan1 stormwater pumping stations catchment is calculated using design rainfall distributed by the 2nd quartile distribution method and the historical rainfall events. From the analysis, the nodal flooding in the urban catchment is likely caused by the high peak rainfall event rather than the large amount of rainfall. The linear regression analysis is implemented. As a result, when several storms have the same amount of rainfall, the nodal flooding in the stormwater pipe systems could be caused by the high peak of storm events. Since as the storm duration become short, the peak rainfall become high, the nodal flooding likely become severe with the short storm duration. The uncertainty in the peak data of design rainfall is analyzed and this uncertainty has to be consider in the stormwater pipe design process.

Assessment of a storm is accomplished by the duration and storm area rather than a simple analysis given by the ground rain gauge stations. One of the best method for assessing storm is Depth-Area-Duration(DAD) of rainfall analysis. but existing DAD analysis method is likely to possible errors. Therefore, DAD analysis and its applicability were examined using a grid-based DAD analysis program that can reduce the possibility of errors in this study. Three spatial distribution techniques were used to analyze the applicability. Then, DAD analysis was performed using the converted grid-based rainfall data. As a result, it was possible to estimate the MAAR values by area for each duration, and showed high applicability in the rainfall data using ordinary kriging technique.
Analyses of observational data and numerical simulations were performed to understand the mechanism of MCSs (Mesoscale Convective Systems) occurred on 13-14 July 2004 over Jindo area of the Korean Peninsula. Observations indicated that synoptic environment was favorable for the occurrence of heavy rainfall. This heavy rainfall appeared to have been enhanced by convergence around the Changma front and synoptic scale lifting. From the analyses of storm environment using Haenam upper-air observation data, it was confirmed that strong convective instability was present around the Jindo area. Instability indices such as K-index, SSI-index showed favorable condition for strong convection. In addition, warm advection in the lower troposphere and cold advection in the middle troposphere were detected from wind profiler data. The size of storm, that produced heavy rainfall over Jindo area, was smaller than $50{\times}50km^2$ according to radar observation. The storm developed more than 10 km in height, but high reflectivity (rain rate 30 mm/hr) was limited under 6 km. It can be judged that convection cells, which form cloud clusters, occurred on the inflow area of the Changma front. In numerical simulation, high CAPE (Convective Available Potential Energy) was found in the southwest of the Korean Peninsula. However, heavy rainfall was restricted to the Jindo area with high CIN (Convective INhibition) and high CAPE. From the observations of vertical drop size distribution from MRR (Micro Rain Radar) and the analyses of numerically simulated hydrometeors such as graupel etc., it can be inferred that melted graupels enhanced collision and coalescence process of heavy precipitation systems.
Accurate quantitative forecasting of rainfall for basins with a short response time is essential to predict flash floods. In this study, a Quantitative Flood Forecasting (QFF) model was developed by incorporating the evolving structure and frequency of intense weather systems and by using neural network approach. Besides using radiosonde and rainfall data, the model also used the satellite-derived characteristics of storm systems such as tropical cyclones, mesoscale convective complex systems and convective cloud clusters as input. The convective classification and tracking system (CCATS) was used to identify and quantify storm properties such as lifetime, area, eccentricity, and track. As in standard expert prediction systems, the fundamental structure of the neural network model was learned from the hydroclimatology of the relationships between weather system, rainfall production and streamflow response in the study area. All these processes stretched leadtime up to 18 hours. The QFF model will be applied to the mid-Atlantic region of United States in a forthcoming paper.
In this study, the optimum design technology is suggested by using reliability analysis method. Nowadays, urban flood inundation is easily occurred because of local heavy rain. Traditional deterministic design method for storm sewer may underestimate the size of pipe. Therefore, stochastic method for the storm sewer design is necessary to solve this problem. In the present study, reliability model using FORM (First Order Reliability Method) was developed for the storm sewer. Developed model was applied to the real storm sewers of 5 different areas. Probability of exceeding capacity has been calculated and construction costs according to diameter have been compared. Probability of exceeding capacity of storm sewers of 5 areas have been calculated after estimating the return period of rainfall intensity.
