  • This paper deals with a parametric study on inclined elliptical dimples to enhance heat transfer in a channel. Three-dimensional Reynolds-averaged Naiver-Stokes equations are solved to estimate flow and heat transfer in dimpled channel. As turbulence closure, the low-Re shear stress transport model is employed. Two non-dimensional geometric variables, dimple ellipse diameter ratio and angle of main diameter to flow direction are selected for the parametric study. The inclined elliptical dimples show higher heat-transfer performance but with higher pressure drop compared to the circular dimples. And there is an optimum inclination angle that gives the maximum heat transfer.

  • An efficient implicit multigrid method is presented for the Navier-Stokes and $k-{\omega}$ turbulence equations. Freezing and limiting strategies are applied to improve the robustness and convergence of the multigrid method. The eddy viscosity and strongly nonlinear production terms of turbulence are frozen in the coarser grids by passing down the values without update of them. The turbulence equations together with the Navier-Stokes equations, however, are consecutively solved on the coarser grids in a loosely coupled fashion. A simple limit for k is also introduced to circumvent slow-down of convergence. Numerical results for the unseparated and separated transonic airfoil flows show that all computations converge well without any robustness problem and the computing time is reduced to a factor of about 3 by the present multigrid method.

  • In this paper, double Fourier sine series is used as a modal displacement functions of a rectangular plate and applied to the free vibration analysis of a rectangular plate under various boundary conditions. The method of stationary potential energy is used to obtain the modal displacements of a plate. To enhance the flexibility of the double Fourier sine series, Lagrangian multipliers are utilized to match the geometric boundary conditions, and Stokes' transformation is used to handle the displacements that are not satisfied by the double Fourier sine series. The frequency parameters and mode shapes obtained by the present method are compared with those obtained by MSC/NASTRAN and other analysis.

  • The effect of a solute concentration difference on the osmotic transport of water through the semi-permeable membrane of a simple cell model is investigated. So far, most studies on osmotic phenomena are described by simple diffusion-type equations ignoring all fluid motion or described by Stokes flow. In our work, as the governing equations, we consider the coupled full Navier-Stokes equations which describe the fluid motion and the full transport equation that takes into account of convection and diffusion effects. A two dimensional finite difference model has been developed to simulate the velocity field, concentration field, and semi-permeable membrane movement. It is shown that the cell swells to regions of lower solute concentration due to the uneven water flux through the semi-permeable membrane. The simulation is applied on a red blood cell geometry and the relevant results are presented.

  • In this paper, we present a finite difference method for the implementation of the rotation of a circular cylinder in the incompressible flow field by solving the two-dimensional unsteady Navier-Stokes equations. The approach is to use staggered grid method so that the accuracy and order of convergence of the associated algorithms can be maintained. The proposed method is easy to be implemented and is effective. A set of simulations for the flow dynamics is provided to show the computational results.

  • Two-dimensional Stokes flows through a micro channel with a couple of symmetric vertical fins are investigated. At far up- and down-stream from the fins, the plane Poiseuille flow exists in the channel. The slip boundary conditions are applied to take account of the Knudsen number effects. For the analysis, the method of eigen function expansion and collocation method are employed. By the results, the streamline patterns and pressure distributions are shown and the force exerted on the fin and the excess pressure drop due to the fins are determined as functions of the length of the fin and Knudsen number. It may be conjectured that the force and the excess pressure drop are almost independent of the Knudsen number.

  • In the present work, a numerical study of fluid flow and heat transfer on the concave surface with impinging jet has been performed by solving three-dimensional Reynods-averaged Naver-Stokes(RANS) equations. The constant temperature condition was applied to the concave impingement surface. The inclination angle of jet nozzle and the distance between jet nozzles are chosen as design variables under equivalent mass flow rate of working fluid into cooling channel, and area averaged Nusselt number on concave impingement surface is set as the objective function. Thirteen training points are obtained by Latin Hypercube sampling method, and the PEA model is constructed by using the objective function values at the trainging points. And, the sequential quadratic programming is used to search for the optimal paint from the PBA model. Through the optimization, the optimal shape shows improved heat transfer rate as compared to the reference geometry.

  • A Navier-Stokes code based on an unstructured finite volume method is used to simulate the MIT flapping foil experiment. A low Reynolds number ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model is used to close the Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes equations. Computations are carried out for the whole experimental domain involving two flapping foils and a downstream hydrofoil. The computational domain is meshed with unstructured quadrilateral elements, partly structured. Numerical solutions show good agreement with experiment. The first harmonics of the velocity in the boundary layer shows local peak value inside the boundary layer and also local minimum near the edge of boundary layer. It is intensified as it develops along the blade surface. This is shown to be caused as the unsteadiness inside the boundary layer is being convected at a speed less than the free stream value. It is also shown that there is negligible mixing of the unsteadiness between the boundary layer and the free stream.

  • The unsteay heat transfer from an isothermal circular cylinder in fluctuating cross flow is simulated numerically, for the case where the amplitude of the oscillating velocity is small compared with the mean velocity. By solving the linear perturbation equations derived from the unsteady full Navier-Stokes and the energy equations, the amplitude and the phase of heat transfer response are obtained in the range of Reynolds number R$_{3}$ < 40. The effects of the velocity, the cylinder radius and the frequency on the response are expressed graphically in terms of the normalized velocity and the cylinder radius.
