Simulation of multivariate non-Gaussian wind pressure on spherical latticed structures

  • Multivariate simulation is necessary for cases where non-Gaussian processes at spatially distributed locations are desired. A simulation algorithm to generate non-Gaussian wind pressure fields is proposed. Gaussian sample fields are generated based on the spectral representation method using wavelet transforms method and then mapped into non-Gaussian sample fields with the aid of a CDF mapping transformation technique. To illustrate the procedure, this approach is applied to experimental results obtained from wind tunnel tests on the domes. A multivariate Gaussian simulation technique is developed and then extended to multivariate non-Gaussian simulation using the CDF mapping technique. It is proposed to develop a new wavelet-based CDF mapping technique for simulation of multivariate non-Gaussian wind pressure process. The efficiency of the proposed methodology for the non-Gaussian nature of pressure fluctuations on separated flow regions of different rise-span ratios of domes is also discussed.

  • This paper presents an intelligent PID control for stochastic systems with nonstationary nature. We optimally determine parameters of a PID controller through learning algorithm and propose an online PID control to compensate system errors possibly occurred in realtime implementations. A dynamic Bayesian network (DBN) model for system errors is additionally explored for making decision about whether an online control is carried out or not in practice. We apply our control approach to traffic control of Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) networks and demonstrate its superior performance comparing to a fixed PID from computer simulations.

Statistical Measurement of Monsyllable Entropy for Korean Language (한국어 음절의 Entropy에 관한 연구)

  • The information amount of monosyllables(characters) in Korean language is measured, in order of the following 3 steps. 1) The basic consonants and vowels are partitioned into two steps, 2) These set symbols, C and V, are sequentially combined to obtain the equation which represent the flow state of monosyllables. 3) From the equation, the state graphs can be constructed to examine the proferties of a stochastic process of monosyllables in Korean language. Furthermore, the entropy of Korean language by statistics is measured and compared with that of the western languages. The proposed methods are more definite, systematic, and simpler than the usual methods in examining the nature of information sources.

  • This paper is concerned with the stochastic nature of elevated temperature tensile strength and creep rupture time in 18Cr-8Ni stainless steels. The Weibull statistical analysis using the NRIM data sheet has been performed to investigate the effects of variability of the elevated temperature tensile strength and creep rupture time on the testing temperature. From those investigations, the distributions of temperature tensile strength and creep rupture time were well followed in 2-parameter Weibull. The shape parameter and scale parameter for the Weibull distribution of tensile strength were decreased with increasing the testing temperature. For the creep rupture time, generally, the shape parameter were decreased with increasing the testing temperature.

  • We propose an intelligent predictive control approach for a nonlinear networked control system (NCS) with time-varying delay and random observation. The control is given by the sum of a nominal control and a corrective control. The nominal control is determined analytically using a linearized system model with fixed time delay. The corrective control is generated online by a neural network optimizer. A Markov chain (MC) dynamic Bayesian network (DBN) predicts the dynamics of the stochastic system online to allow predictive control design. We apply our proposed method to a satellite attitude control system and evaluate its control performance through computer simulation.

  • The variables relating to the fatigue behavior have uncertainty and are random. The fatigue crack propagation is, thus, stochastic in nature. In this study, fatigue experiments are performed on the specimen of the magnesium alloy AZ31. The data of the fatigue life are scattered even in the same experimental condition. It is necessary to determine the probability distribution of the fatigue crack propagation life for the reliability analysis as well as the design and maintenance of structural components. Therefore the statistics and the probability distribution for the fatigue crack propagation life are investigated and the best fit probability distribution of that is proposed in this paper.

  • The fatigue crack propagation is stochastic in nature, because the variables affecting the fatigue behavior are random and have uncertainty. Therefore, the fatigue life prediction is critical for the design and the maintenance of many structural components. In this study, fatigue experiments are conducted on the specimens of magnesium alloy AZ31 under various conditions such as thickness of specimen, the load ratio and the loading condition. The probability distribution fit to the fatigue failure life are investigated through a probability plot paper by these conditions. The probabilities of failure at various conditions are also estimated. The fatigue design life is predicted by using the Weibull distribution.

  • A novel probabilistic approach is presented for estimating the equivalent static wind loads that produce a static response of the structure, which is "equivalent" in a probabilistic sense, to the extreme dynamic responses due to the unsteady pressure random field induced by the wind. This approach has especially been developed for complex structures (such as stadium roofs) for which the unsteady pressure field is measured in a boundary layer wind tunnel with a turbulent incident flow. The proposed method deals with the non-Gaussian nature of the unsteady pressure random field and presents a model that yields a good representation of both the quasi-static part and the dynamical part of the structural responses. The proposed approach is experimentally validated with a relatively simple application and is then applied to a stadium roof structure for which experimental measurements of unsteady pressures have been performed in boundary layer wind tunnel.

Therefore, the fatigue life prediction is critical for the design and the maintenance of many structural components. In this study, fatigue experiments are conducted on the specimens of magnesium alloy under the different thicknesses of specimen. The effects of specimen thickness on the probability distribution of the fatigue crack propagation life and the crack size are estimated experimentally. The probability distribution of the crack size and the fatigue life for different specimen thicknesses are investigated by Anderson-Darling test and the best fit for those probability distributions are also presented.

  • Due to the complexity and stochastic nature of automated warehousing system, items are usually queued up at I/O point. We introduce a storage/retrieval policy : dual-command. We present quick approximations to queueing phenomena under these policies. It is assumed that the storage and retrieval arrival pattern follow the same poisson process. We also assumed that storage queue and retrieval queue being operated separately. The approximation attempts are performed under the proposed storage/retrieval policies after we derive S/R machine travel time distributions.
