  • An improved method has been developed for the computation of the section forces and stiffness in nonlinear finite element analysis of RC plane frames. The need for a new approach arises because the conventional technique may have a questionable level of efficiency if a large number of layers is specified and a questionable level of accuracy if a smaller number is used. The proposed technique is based on automatically dividing the section into zones of similar state of stress and tangent modulus and then numerically integrating within each zone to evaluate the sectional stiffness parameters and forces. In the new system, the size, number and location of the layers vary with the state of the strains in the cross section. The proposed method shows a significant improvement in time requirement and accuracy in comparison with the conventional layered approach. The computer program based on the new technique has been used successfully to predict the experimental load-deflection response of a RC frame and good agreement with test and other numerical results have been obtained.

  • This paper presents a study of the tensile behavior of carbon and glass fiber reinforced epoxy hybrid laminates manufactured by vacuum assisted resin transfer molding (VARTM). The objective of this study was to develop and characterize carbon fiber reinforced plastic hybrid composite material that is low cost and light-weight and that possesses adequate strength and stiffness. The effect of position and content of the glass fabric layer on the tensile properties of the hybrid laminates was examined. The strength and stiffness of the hybrid laminates showed a steady decrease with an increase of the glass fabric content this decrease was almost linear. Fracture strain of these laminates showed a slight increasing trend when glass fabric content was increased up to 3 layers, but at a glass fabric content > 3 layers the strain was almost constant. When glass fabric layers were at both outer surfaces, the hybrid laminate exhibited a slightly higher tensile strength and elastic modulus due to the small amount of glass yarn pull-out.

  • Optimal topology design is to search the optimal configuration of a structure which can be used as a shape at the conceptual design stage. Our objective is to maximize the stiffness of the structures and ribs under a material usage constraintl. The density of each finite element is the design variable and its relationship with Young's modulus is expressed by quadratic form. The configuration is represented by the entire density distribution, the structural analysis is performed by finite element method and the optimiza- tion is performed by Feasible Direction Method. Feasible Direction Method can handle various problems simultaneously, that is, mult-objectives and multi-constraints. Total computation time can be reduced by the quadratic relationship between the density and the material property and fewer design variables than Homogenization Method. Toplogy optimization technique developed in this research is applied to design the shapes of the ribs.

  • Composite steel-concrete structures are employed extensively in modern high rise buildings and bridges. This concept has achieved wide spread acceptance because it guarantees economic benefits attributable to reduced construction time and large improvements in stiffness. Even though the combination of steel and concrete enhances the strength and stiffness of composite beams, the time-dependent behaviour of concrete may weaken the strength of the shear connection. When the concrete loses its strength, it will transfer its stresses to the structural steel through the shear studs. This behaviour will reduce the strength of the composite member. This paper presents the development of an accurate finite element model using ABAQUS to study the behaviour of shear connectors in push tests incorporating the time-dependent behaviour of concrete. The structure is modelled using three-dimensional solid elements for the structural steel beam, shear connectors, concrete slab and profiled steel sheeting. Adequate care is taken in the modelling of the concrete behaviour when creep is taken into account owing to the change in the elastic modulus with respect to time. The finite element analyses indicated that the slip ductility, the strength and the stiffness of the composite member were all reduced with respect to time. The results of this paper will prove useful in the modelling of the overall composite beam behaviour. Further experiments to validate the models presented herein will be conducted and reported at a later stage.

  • In this paper, a non-conforming 3-D 8-node solid element(MQM10) has beets applied to the analyses of static and dynamic bending problems of laminated composite plates The QM10 element exhibits stiffer bending stiffness which is caused by the reduction of degree of freedom from Q11 element. As an effective way to correct the relative stiffness stiffening phenomenon the modification of Gauss sampling points for composite plates is proposed. The quantity of modification is a function of material properties. Also, another two modified equations are obtained, one is modification for stress, and the other is modification of coefficient of shear modulus in free vibration. It is noted that MQM10 element can analyse the static and free vibration problems of various 3-dimensional composite plates composed of unidirectional laminae, woven laminae or braided laminae. The results of MQM10 element are in good agreement with those of 20-node element.

  • The objective of this paper is to find the density, stiffness, and strength of truss-wall diamond corrugation model combined with pinwheel truss inside space. The truss-wall diamond corrugation (TDC) model is defined as a unit cell coming from solid-wall diamond corrugation (SDC) model. Pinwheel truss-wall diamond corrugation (P-TDC) model is made by TDC connected with pinwheel structure inside of the space. Derived ideal solutions of P-TDC is based on truss-wall and pinwheel truss model at first. And then it is compared with Gibson-Ashby's ideal solution. To validate the ideal solutions of the P-TDC, ABAQUS software is used to predict the density, strength, and stiffness, and then each of them are compared to the ideal solution of Gibson-Ashby with a log-log scale. Applied material property is stainless steel 304 because of having cost effectiveness. Applied parameters for P-TDC are 1 thru 5 mm diameter within fixed opening width as 4mm. In conclusion, the relative Young's modulus and relative yield strength of the P-TDC unit model is reasonable matched to the ideal expectations of the Gibson-Ashby's theory. In nearby future, P-TDC model is hoped to be applied to make sandwich core structure by advanced technologies such as 3D printing skills.

  • The objective in here is to find the density, stiffness, and strength of truss-wall rectangular (TWR) model which is combined with lattice truss (MLT) inside space. The TWR unit-cell model is defined as a unit cell originated from a solid-wall rectangular (SWR) model and it has an empty space inside. Thus, the empty space inside of the TWR is filled with lattice truss model defined as TWR-MLT. The ideal solutions derived of TWR-MLT are based on TWR with MLT model and it has developed by Gibson-Ashby's theory. To validate the ideal solutions of the TWR-MLT, ABAQUS software is applied to predict the density, strength, and stiffness, and then each of them are compared with the Gibson-Ashby's ideal solution as a log-log scale. Applied material property is stainless steel 304 because of cost effectiveness and easy to get around. For the analysis, SWR and TWR-MLT models are 1mm, 2mm, and 3mm truss diameter separately within a fixed 20mm opening width. In conclusion, the relative Young's modulus and relative yield strength of the TWR-MLT unit model is reasonably matched to the ideal expectations of the Gibson-Ashby's theory. In nearby future, TWR-MLT model can be verified by advanced technologies such as 3D printing skills.t.

  • This study proposes a new smart base isolation system that employs Magneto-Rheological Elastomers (MREs), a class of smart materials whose elastic modulus or stiffness can be varied depending on the magnitude of an applied magnetic field. It also evaluates the dynamic performance of the MRE-based isolation system in reducing vibrations in structures subject to various seismic excitations. As controllable stiffness elements, MREs can increase the dynamic control bandwidth of the isolation system, improving its vibration reduction capability. To study the effectiveness of the MRE-based isolation system, this paper compares its dynamic performance in reducing vibration responses of a base-isolated single-story structure (i.e., 2DOF) with that of a conventional base-isolation system. Moreover, two control algorithms (linear quadratic regulator (LQR)-based control and state-switched control) are considered for regulating the stiffness of MREs. The simulation results show that the MRE-based isolation system outperformed the conventional system in suppressing the maximum base drift, acceleration, and displacement of the structure.

  • The joints of the new prefabricated concrete assemble beam-column joints are put together by the hybrid joints of inserting steel under post-tensioned and non-prestressed force and both beams and columns adopt prefabricated components. The low cyclic loading test has been performed on seven test specimens of beam-column joints. Based on the experimental result, the rotation capacity of the joints is studied and the $M-{\theta}$ relation curve is obtained. According to Eurocode 3: Design of steel structures and based on the initial rotational stiffness, the joints are divided into three types; by equivalent bending-resistant stiffness to the precast beam, the equivalent modulus of elasticity $E_e$ is elicited with the superposition method; the beam length is figured out that satisfies the rigid joints and after meeting the requirements of application and safety, the new prefabricated concrete assemble beam-column joints can be regarded as the rigid joints; the design formula adopted by the standard of concrete joint classification is theoretically derived, thereby providing a theoretical basis for the new prefabricated concrete structure.

  • A simple predicted model using a modified Shear-lag method was used to represent the moisture absorption effect on the stiffness degradation for $[0/90]_{2s}$ composite laminates with transverse cracks and under flexural loading. Good agreement is obtained by comparing the prediction model and experimental data published by Smith and Ogin (2000). The material properties of the composite are affected by the variation of temperature and moisture absorption. The transient and non-uniform moisture concentration distribution give rise to the transient elastic moduli of cracked composite laminates. The hygrothermal effect is taken into account to assess the changes in the normalised axial and flexural modulus due to transverse crack. The obtained results represent well the dependence of the stiffness properties degradation on the cracks density, moisture absorption and operational temperature. The composite laminate with transverse crack loaded in axial tension is more affected by the hygrothermal condition than the one under flexural loading. Through this theoretical study, we hope to contribute to the understanding of the moisture absorption on the composite materials with matrix cracking.
