In this paper, we propose a stereoscopic video coding scheme for subway accident monitoring system. The proposed designed for providing flexible video among various displays, such ass control center, station employees and train driver. We uses MPEG-2 standard for coding the left-view sequence and IBMDC coding scheme predicts matching block by interpolating both motion and disparity predicted macroblocks. To provide efficient stereoscopic video service, we define both temporally and spatially scalable layers for each eye's-view by using the concept of Spatio-Temporal scalability. The experimental results show the efficiency of proposed coding scheme by comparison with already known methods and the advantages of disparity estimation in terms of scalability overhead. According to the experimental results, we expect the proposed functionalities will play a key role in establishing highly flexible stereoscopic video codec for ubiquitous display environment where devices and network connections are heterogeneous.

We present a multi-view autostereoscopic display system based on volume holographic storage technique. In this proposed system, the interference pattern of spatial multiplexed plane reference and angular multiplexed plane object beams are recorded into a photorefractive crystal, which plays a role of guiding object beams of multi-view images into the desired persfective directions. For reconstruction, object beams containing the desired multi-view image information, which satisfy Bragg matching condition, are illuminated in the time-division multiplexed manner onto the crystal. Then multiple stereoscopic images are Projected to the display plane for autostereoscopic 3D viewing.

This paper proposes a readability enhancement filter for Patterned Retarder (PR) display. In general, when some texts in stereoscopic images are shown on PR display, their readability tends to be lowered. In order to overcome this problem, we present a readability enhancement algorithm which consists of readability filtering stage and post-processing stage for specific characters. First, each input stereo image is divided into an odd line image and an even line image. Then, they are independently up-scaled vertically by using Lanczos filter. Next, two up-scaled line images are averaged considering vertical phase difference. In post-processing stage, two specific characters which are normally difficult to read on PR display are detected, and they are filtered for additional readability enhancement. Here, this additional filtering is based on a specific brightness adjustment, and is applied only for two characters. The experiment results show that the proposed method achieves significant improvement in terms of readability in comparison with the previous scheme.

Recently, with the advent of stereoscopic 3D TV, the activation of 3D stereoscopic content is expected. Research on 3D auto stereoscopic display has been carried out to relieve discomfort of 3D stereoscopic display. In this research, it is necessary to generate the elemental image from a lens array. As the number of lens in a lens array is increased, it takes a lot of time to generate the elemental image, and it will take more time for a large volume data. In order to improve the problem, in this paper, we propose a method to generate the elemental image by using OpenCL based on CUDA. We perform our proposed method on PC environment with one of Tesla C1060, Geforce 9800GT and Quadro FX 3800 graphics cards. Experimental results show that the proposed method can obtain almost 20 times better performance than recent research result[11].

3D stereoscopic viewing of large scale imagery, such as aerial photography and satellite images, needs different parallaxes relative to the display scale. For example, when a viewer sees a stereoscopic image of aerial photography, the optimal parallax of its zoom-in image should be smaller than that of its zoom-out. Therefore, relative parallax adjustment according to the display scale is required. Merely adjusting the spacing between stereo images is not appropriate because the depths of the whole image are either exaggerated or reduced entirely. This paper focuses on the improving stereoscopic viewing with a single remote sensing image and a digital surface model (DSM). We present the parallax adjustment technique to maximize the 3D realistic effect and the visual comfort. For remote sensing data, DSM height value can be regarded as disparity. There are two possible kinds of methods to adjust the relative parallax with a single image performance. One is the DSM compression technique: the other is an adjustment of the distance between the original image and its stereo-mate. In our approach, we carried out a test to evaluate the optimal distance between a single remote sensing image and its stereo-mate, relative to the viewing scale. Several synthetic stereo-mates according to certain viewing scale were created using a parallel projection model and their anaglyphs were estimated visually. The occlusion of the synthetic stereo-mate was restored by the inpainting method using the fields of experts (FoE) model. With the experiments using QuickBird imagery, we could obtain stereoscopic images with optimized parallax at varied display scales.
In order to realize a 3-D stereoscopic display module with alternating illumination angles, several conditions required for a lenticular lens sheet were established, and then both the lens specification and the module structure were designed. Also the performance of the stereoscopic module and its tolerance characteristics were evaluated by simulating the intensity distribution on the observation plane with a finite-ray tracing technique. From the evaluation, it was known that an intersection area between two adjacent lenses should not be filled and that the lateral mismatch between a planar liquid crystal shutter and a lens sheet should be minimized.

Recently, technology of Virtual Reality(VR) based on HMD among various kinds of VR implemented products has received widespread attention. Major IT-related companies around the world participated in VR HMD research and development. Therefore, the possibility of the spread of VR HMD has been highly praised. Demands of VR HMD products using Smart Phone has been especially increased so that it is required to create a high quality of VR contents. The purpose of study in this paper is to apply the depth value of stereoscopic to VR HMD. To implement it, we analyzed VR HMD optical system and converted an experimental image to virtual depth caused by binocular disparity based on the result of calculating NPP(Native Pixel Parallax). We produced the image of stereoscopic applied with the value converted and applied to VR HMD. This study is expected to be utilized as a VR content creation field of quantitative data.
This study was aimed to analyze the disparities of 3D stereoscopic images in four well-known American animation movies. After Avatar (2009), lots of stereoscopic movies were developed in Korean 3D production. Almost all 3D productions in Korea, however, focus on the display images or TV series animation yet. In order to make many well-made Korean stereoscopic 3D animations in future, analyzing and comparing the disparities of 3D stereoscopic images is necessary and even mandated. First, I chose 40 cuts from each four American stereoscopic 3D feature films, including Despicable me 2, Epic, Monster University, and Turbo. According to the classifications of shot angles by Vineyard (2008), secondly I analyze the 23 different angular disparities of 3D stereoscopic images and displayed in tables. Demonstrated shot angle disparities in each scene would provide numerical information to animators how to design and make the 3D stereoscopic images. Making successful stereoscopic 3D feature film will be a huge turning point in the Korean animation field in future. This study would be a first trial to seek a new method to set ahead an outlook of numerical values of 3D stereoscopic images for better visual effects.

The problem of the conflict between eye convergence and accommodation can be induced at Stereoscopic or multi-view 3D display system using binocular disparity. A multi-focus 3D display system was developed, which can solve the problem. LEDs are used instead of galvano scanner and laser to avoid mechanical moving part at the 3D display system.
The human vision system has visual functions for viewing 3D images with a correct depth. These functions are called accommodation, vergence and binocular stereopsis. Most 3D display system utilizes binocular stereopsis. The authors have developed a monocular 3D vision system with accommodation mechanism, which is useful function for perceiving depth.
