  • Forty nine accessions of the Sorghum bicolor (L) Moench collected from different agronomical zone of Gangwondo province, Korea were characterized morphologically on field trial. Plant length, stem diameter, tiller number, ear type, ear length, ear width, leaves length, leaves width and leaf color differed significantly in the cultivated accessions. Out of forty nine test accessions, six accessions (12.2%) showed comparatively taller height, measuring more than 300 cm, while, other ten test accessions (20.4%) were measured from 200~300 cm. There were no significant differences in the diameter of stem in the collected test accessions (2~3 cm). Of the total test accession, seven accessions showed leaf length of over 70 cm, and twenty two test accession revealed leaf length between 60-70 cm. Forty nine of the collected test accessions showed narrow and short leaves with white mid vain. These results provided additional information for the breeding programs and conservation of Sorghum bicolor as a bio-energy crop.

  • Overhead and sub-irrigation of deep sea water to tomato seedlings reduced the height as 50% and 58% than control plants. In the same treatment with surface sea water and NaCl water, the reduced rate in tomato seedlings' height were 49% and 56% in overhead irrigation, and 47% and 57% in sub-irrigation, respectively. Most effective method for the inhibition of the growth of the seedling was sub-irrigation method, which supplied water through the roots. No significant difference was observed on fresh weight of the upper part of tomato and cucumber seedlings, though the sub-irrigation reduced the fresh weight than the overhead irrigation. The reduced rate of fresh weight of seedlings by overhead irrigation was by 38% and sub-irrigation by 49% as compared to control. Similarly dry weight of upper and under soil parts of seedlings showed same trend of results thereof as fresh weight. This result can be traced to reduction of growth caused by salts in the water. In stem diameter of seedlings no significant difference was observed between two irrigation methods, even though both deep sea and NaCl water reduced stem diameter, as compared to control water. Overhead irrigation can be chosen by seedling producers because of better seedling quality by using TH ratio. Seedling compactness were not noticed in both the overhead and sub-irrigation. Sub-irrigation was found more effective method far the inhibition of height and compactness of tomato seedlings. Higher the concentration of NaCl, deep sea, and surface sea water, lesser the growth in height, fresh and dry weight, stem diameter, and leaf area was obtained. No significant difference was found, though sub-irrigation suppress the growth of seedlings.

  • This study was carried out to obtained the basic information for seed coat dehiscence and seedling performance according to seed size of eight ginseng cultivars. Seed size was separated into four grade(upper 5.0, 5.0-4.7, 4.7-4.0, and under 4.0mm in diameter). Seed coat dehiscence and survival ratio of seedling were not affected by seed size. Aerial parts growth of seedling such as stem length, stem diameter, and leaf area of seedling were larger seed(upper 5.0 mm) better than those of small seeds(4.7-4.0, and under 4.0 mm in diameter). Also root part growths such as root diameter, and fresh weight were larger seed(upper 5.0 mm) higher than those of small seeds(4.7-4.0, and under 4.0 mm in diameter). However, root length was not affected by seed size. Growth status of aerial and root parts of 'unpoong' 'umpoong' and 'opoong' were better than those of other cultivars in each grade of seed sizes. The growth of characteristics of 'hunpoong' and 'hungsun' were less than those of other cultivars.

  • The aim of this study was to derive stem taper equations for Quercus acuta, one of main evergreen broad-leaved tree species found in warm temperate regions, and to prepare a stem volume table using those stem taper equations. A total of 688 individual trees were used in the analysis, which were collected from Jeonnam-do, Gyeongnam-do, and Jeju-do. The stem taper models applied to derive the stem curve pattern were the Max and Burkhart, Kozak, and Lee models. Among the three stem taper models, the best explanation of the stem curve shape of Q. acuta was found to be given by the Kozak model, which showed a fitness index of 0.9583, bias of 0.0352, percentage of estimated standard error of 1.1439, and mean absolute deviation of 0.6751. Thus, the stem taper of Q. acuta was estimated using the Kozak model. Moreover, thestemvolumecalculationwasperforme d by applying the Smalian formula to the diameter and height of each stem interval. In addition, an analysis of variance (ANOVA) was conducted to compare the two existing Q. acuta stem volume tables (2007 and 2010) and the newly created stem volume table (2023). This analysis revealed that the stem volume table constructed in the Wando region in 2007 included about twice as much as the stem volume tables constructed in 2010 and 2023. The stem volume table (2023) developed in this study is not only based on the regional collection range and number of utilized trees but also on a sound scientific basis. Therefore, it can be used at the national level as an official stem volume table for Q. acuta.

  • This study was carried out to find growth increasing methods of Rhododendron mucronulatum in Mt. Biseul. 4 treatments(heavy pruning, light pruning, non-pruning+fertilization, non-pruning(control)) were used in the study area with different pruning methods. Growth characteristics of new shoot, number of creation of flower buds and leaf buds in new shoot were analysed. Significant differences were observed among the treatments and stem diameter degree. Diameter, length of new shoots and the number of flower buds, leaf buds per new shoots increased in the pruning treatments. But heavy pruning showed more effective growth increasing way than light pruning. Non-pruning and fertilization treatments were not effective to increase growth of Rhododendron mucronulatum. And pruning at the end of May was the most effective way for growth of new shoot.

  • The aneurysm arising from the posterior cerebral artery is relatively uncommon, and has been reported in 0.7- 2.2% of whole cerebral aneurysm. Moreover, only a few cases of the giant aneurysm over 2.5cm in diameter arising from the distal portion of the posterior cerebral artery have been reported. Neurologic complications may occur after surgical treatment of this aneurysm due to difficult surgical approach and neurovascular complexity around the brain stem. Authors experienced a case of the thrombosed giant aneurysm with approximately 2.7cm in diameter arising from the P2 segment of the left posterior cerebral artery. Complete removal of the thrombus in the aneurysmal sac and direct neck clipping was performed via left subtemporal approach.

  • The phenotypic and genotypic correlations and heritabitities were calculated on 10 characters measured, using 10 native and 10 of introduced soybean varieties planted on 7 times with 15 days interval from April 15th. The genotypic correlations associated with grain yield were partitioned in to direct and indirect effects through the path coefficient analysis. The results are summarized as follows; 1. Generally high associations between characters were found, with high genotypic correlations than phenotypic, due to, probably, the fact that non segregating fixed varieties were used, and that the environmental effects were not elliminated appropreately here. Neverthless, the relative degree of association could be estimated. 2. The degree of associations of characters were different according the planting time, requiring the considerations on the specific characteristics depending on the specific planting time. 3. The introduced varieties were different with native ones in many respects, especially on the associations with stem length, stem diameter and seed weight. Here, the degree and the directions of the associations in the introduced ones were some peculier. 4. The less significant differences of characters between native varieties caused the heritability of native lower than that of introduced except the heritability of days from blooming to mature and seed weight. 5. The genetic associations of characters, measured, with grain yield were partitioned in to direct and indirect effects, calculating path coefficients. The days to bloom, stem length and stem diameter were most significantly affected the grain yield in the 5th planting of native ones.

  • This study has been conducted to estimate the proper amount of phosphatic fertilizer required to increase-yield in growing soybeans on newly reclaimed-sterile land which is short of phosphatic fertilizer. IKSAN, the variety chosen for this study, was planted, using the plant spacing $60cm{\times}30cm$. Phosphatic fertilizer was applied in 4 levels in none, standard, double, and triple amount. and at the same time, nitrogen and postassium were applied only in standard amount. Randomized block design was applied in arranging the experimental plots. A series of results acquired are summarized as follows. 1. The fact was recognized that only the standard amount of phosphatic fertilizer is effective for increasing the pod numbers and the soybean yield per l0a. 2. The difference in stem length and stem diameter was very remarkable even among individual plants in the same plot, Throughout all four of the plots there were difference in stem length and stem diameter. That is to say, any invariable tendency on them due to the amount of phosphatic fertilizer applied could not be observed at all. 3. It was recognized that amount of phosphatic fertilizer applied did not have a considerable influence upon the weight of the seeds and the number of seeds contained in 0.l8ι. 4. It was observed that the weight of 1000 seeds was strikingly increased as far as double the amount phosphatic fertilizer.

  • Root is supposed to be important role in growth and yield formation of soybeans and also there is expected to exist varietal differences between soybean root morphology and system. 30 soybean varieties including 10 Korean recommended, 10 Introduced and 10 Korean native varieties were grown at field and pot under standard culture condition. Top and root characteristics were investigated at V4, R1 and R5 stage and T/R relations, correlations with yield were calculated. Top characteristics showed significant difference between 3 variety groups of Korean recommended, Introduced and Korean native variety. Stem length at R1 stage and stem length, stem diameter, number of nodes, number of branches, number of pods and grain yield at R5 stage were significantly different top characteristics. Root characteristics showed significant difference between 3 variety groups were number of thick primary root at V4 stage, primary root angle and root cutting strength at R1 stage, thick root diameter and root dry weight at R5 stage. The correlations between top and root characteristics and soybean yield was greatly different by soybean variety groups, and the top characteristics was more highly correlated then root characteristics. All the top and root characteristics of Korean recommended variety showed no correlations with yield. However, leaf area, stem length, top dry weight in Introduced variety and leaf area, top dry weight, number of nodes, number of thick primary root in Korean native variety were highly correlated with soybean yield.
