This paper employs computational tools to predict power increase (or speed loss) and propulsion performances in waves of KVLCC2. Two-phase unsteady Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes equations have been solved using finite volume method; and a realizable k-ε model has been applied for the turbulent closure. The free-surface is obtained by solving a VOF equation. Sliding mesh method is applied to simulate the flow around an operating propeller. Towing and self-propulsion computations in calm water are carried out to obtain the towing force, propeller rotating speed, thrust and torque at the self-propulsion point. Towing computations in waves are performed to obtain the added resistance. The regular short head waves of λ/LPP = 0.6 with 4 wave steepness of H/λ = 0.007, 0.017, 0.023 and 0.033 are taken into account. Four methods to predict speed-power relationship in waves are discussed; Taylor expansion, direct powering, load variation, resistance and thrust identity methods. In the load variation method, the revised ITTC-78 method based on the 'thrust identity' is utilized to predict propulsive performances in full scale. The propulsion performances in waves including propeller rotating speed, thrust, torque, thrust deduction and wake fraction, propeller advance coefficient, hull, propeller open water, relative rotative and propulsive efficiencies, and delivered power are investigated.

The purpose of this study is to estimate not only the watershed soil loss but also its temporal changes of Kyungan River basin, the study area, due to the land development. To analyze the soil loss of the river basin, USLE was employed. GIS and remote sensing were also utilized to estimate the soil loss. The data for this analysis consist of a series of thematic map and remotely sensed data. The remotely sensed images for this study are Landsat TM(Oct, 28, 1997 & Sep. 22, 1992), In Kyungan River basin, not only the detection of temporal changes of land use and GVI, but also the estimation of soil loss provided very significant factors that affect to the watershed environment quality. The management of the factors of vegetative cover, slope steepness and length were the keys to reduce soil loss and solve conservation and protection issues of Kyungan River basin. GIS application with USLE to the watershed analysis allows the planner to recognize sensitive sites and to plan strategies to minimize soil loss.
Slope is an important mathematical concept that is connected to advanced mathematics as well as a basic concept as an indicator of the steepness of a straight line. The purpose of this study is to see how the concept of slope is presented in mathematics textbooks of middle school. For this study, we analyzed the types of slope concepts in the textbooks. In particular, we analyzed motivation activity, definition, examples of slope in them and used a concept framework of slope by Stump(1999, 2001), Moore-Russo, Connor & Rugg (2011). As a result, it was shown that middle school mathematics textbooks use the types of slope concepts to be biased when explaining the slope or presenting the slope problems. In addition, the real contexts of slope is poorly presented, and the concept types change from visual aspect to analytical aspect in the processes. This study provides suggestions on how to present the slope concepts in mathematics curriculum and middle school textbooks.

Various offshore structures such as FPSO, FSO, Semi-submersible, TLP and Spar are operated to develop offshore oil and gas fields. Most of the offshore structures shall be operated over 20 years under the harsh environments at sites so that the offshore structures should be designed to endure the harsh environments. In this study, the effect of the impact load (so called slapping load) by the steep waves acting on the FPSO bow is investigated through the model test. For measurement of the impact pressures on the frontal area, a bow-shaped panel was fabricated, and installed the pressure sensors on the bow starboard side of the model FPSO. During the model test campaign, the impact load was investigated using the steep waves with $Hs/{\lambda}$ greater than 1/16 of the representative wave condition. Consequently, it is confirmed through the model test that the impact loads acting on the FPSO bow are significantly increased with the steep waves ($Hs/{\lambda}$ > 1/16) than the representative wave conditions of a maximum significant wave height and a pitch forcing period. Therefore, for safe design of North Sea FPSO, it is necessary to consider the steep waves in addition to the representative wave conditions and to be applied as proper structural load. Also, the effect of random seeds in irregular waves should be considered to build the safe FPSO.

Breaking waves were generated in a 2-D flume. A piston-type wavemaker was operated in accordance with signals which consist of elementary harmonics with appropriate phase differences. These phase differences were estimated by using a linear wave theory so that wave crests were to be concentrated at the same position. The stroke of wavemaker was controlled to create plunging-type breaking waves. The signal with small amplitude could not generate breaking waves. In the case of moderate amplitudes, various breaking waves could be obtained. Most of breaking waves were spilling type. Only when the wavemaker was operated with appropriate amplitude, plunging-type breaking waves were generated. The parameters of breaking waves are the wave steepness and the frequency bandwidth. If the central frequency was low, breaking waves were not generated. Based on experimental data, we found that the wave height of breaking inception was H = 0.0113 gT$^2$. We also made computations by using a mixed Euler-Lagrangian scheme under the assumption of potential flow. The numerical results show good agreements with tank measurements.

This study aimed to develop a parcel-unit soil loss estimation tool embedded in Excel worksheet, USLExls, required for the design of contaminated farmland restoration project and to analyze the impact of the project carried out soil-filling work on soil loss. USLE method was adopted for the estimation of average annual soil loss in a parcel unit, and each erosivity factor in the USLE equation was defined through the review of previous studies. USLExls was implemented to allow an engineer to try out different combinations just by selecting one among the popular formulas by each factor at a combo box and to simply update parameters by using look-up tables. This study applied it to the estimation of soil loss before and after soil-filling work at Dong-a project area. The average annual soil loss after the project increased by about 2.4 times than before on average, and about 60 % of 291 parcels shifted to worse classes under the classification criteria proposed by Kwak (2005). Although average farmland steepness was lower thanks to land grading work, the soil loss increased because the inappropriate texture of the cover soil induced the soil erosion factor K to increase from 0.33 before to 0.78 after the soil-filling work. The results showed that the selection of cover soil for soil-filling work should be carefully considered in terms soil loss control and the estimation of change in soil loss should be mandatory in planning a contaminated farmland restoration project.

Conentionally, LS factor for the USLE suggested by Wischmeier has been computed manually on topographic maps based on one dimensional approach. But outcomes of the equation could be severely affected by the convergence and divergence of surface runoff at complex terrains. Thus the objective of this research are to develop a method to automatically compute LS factor based on the multiple flow algorithm, and to test the accuracy of this method by comparing outcomes of this method to previous measurements or estimations of soil erosion. The program for the automatic calculation of LS factor was developed by utilizing Fox Pro 4.5, and outcomes of the program is designed to input to IDRISI. The accuracy test of LS factor was carried out by comparing the actual measurements of soil loss at two test sites in and around of Suwon. The calculated volume of soil erosion at Buju mountain, Mokpo, was also compared to the outcome of a previous research based on the LS factor calculated by the conventional onedimensional approach. The outcomes of this research are as follows. First, the computed L based on the multiple flow algorithm for concae slopes are greater than those of convex slopes,. Second, the estimated soil loss based on this method at the test site in Mokpo is much greater than the outcomes based on the conventional one-dimensional approach. It can e concluded that the application of this automatic calculation method of LS factor can improve the accuracy of USLE and facilitate soil erosion prevention methods.

The Mekong which is one of the world's most significant rivers plays an extremely important role to South East Asia. Lying across six riparian countries including China, Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam and being a greatly biological and ecological diversity of fishes, the river supports a huge population who living along Mekong Basin River. Therefore, much attention has been focused on the giant Mekong Basin River, particularly, the soil erosion and sedimentation problems which rise critical impacts on irrigation, agriculture, navigation, fisheries and aquatic ecosystem. In fact, there have been many methods to calculate these problems; however, in the case of Mekong, the available data have significant limitations because of large area (about 795 00 km2) and a failure by management agencies to analyze and publish of developing countries in Mekong Basin River. As a result, the Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE) model in a GIS (Geographic Information System) framework was applied in this study. The USLE factors contain the rainfall erosivity, soil erodibility, slope length, steepness, crop management and conservation practices which are represented by raster layers in GIS environment. In the final step, these factors were multiplied together to estimate the soil erosion rate in the study area by using spatial analyst tool in the ArcGIS 10.2 software. The spatial distribution of soil loss result will be used to support river basin management to find the subtainable management practices by showing the position and amount of soil erosion and sediment load in the dangerous areas during the selected 56- year period from 1952 to 2007.
Objective: To investigate dimensional changes in regional pharyngeal airway spaces after premolar extraction in bimaxillary skeletal protrusion (BSP) patients according to vertical skeletal pattern, and to further identify dentoskeletal risk factors to predict posttreatment pharyngeal changes. Methods: Fifty-five adults showing BSP treated with microimplant anchorage after four premolar extractions were included in this retrospective study. The subjects were divided into two groups according to the mandibular plane steepness: hyperdivergent (Frankfort horizontal plane to mandibular plane [FH-MP] ≥ 30) and nonhyperdivergent groups (FH-MP < 30). The control group consisted of 20 untreated adults with skeletal Class I normodivergent pattern and favorable profile. Treatment changes in cephalometric variables were evaluated and compared. The association between posttreatment changes in the dentoskeletal and upper airway variables were analyzed using linear regression analysis. Results: The BSP patients showed no significant decrease in the pharyngeal dimensions to the lower level in comparison with controls, except for middle airway space (MAS, p < 0.01). The upper airway variable representing greater decrease in the hyperdivergent group than in the nonhyperdivergent group was the MAS (p < 0.01). Posttreatment changes in FH-MP had negative correlation with changes in MAS (β = -0.42, p < 0.01) and inferior airway space (β = -0.52, p < 0.01) as a result of multivariable regression analysis adjusted for sagittal skeletal relationship. Conclusions: Decreased pharyngeal dimensions after treatment in BSP patients showed no significant difference from the normal range of pharyngeal dimensions. However, the glossopharyngeal airway space may be susceptible to treatment when vertical dimension increased in hyperdivergent BSP patients.

The consistency of the initially designed waves in the domain is essential for accurate calculation of the added resistance in waves through CFD. In particular, unwanted reflected waves at domain boundaries can cause incorrect numerical solutions due to the superposition with initially designed waves. Euler Overlay Method(EOM) is one of the methods for reducing wave reflections by adding an additional source term to momentum and phase conservation equations, respectively. In this study, we apply the Euler Overlay Method(EOM) to the open-source CFD library, OpenFOAM(R), to simulate the accurate free-surface waves in the domain and the parametric study is performed for efficient implementation of Euler Overlay Method(EOM). Considering that the damping efficiency depends on the selection of the overlay parameter in the added source terms, the size of overlay zone and the wave steepness, the influences of these factors are tested through the wave elevation measured at constant time intervals in the 2D numerical wave tank. Through this process, guidelines for selection of optimal overlay parameter and overlay zone size that can be applied according to the scaling law are finally presented.
