  • Absorptive bistable laser diode was analyzed by using traveling wave model in conjunction with the finite-difference method. Carrier and photon density distributions were calculated and the output characteristics were obtained. The results for both the steady-state and transient (switching) cases were compared with those of the rate equation approach.

  • The finite element analysis of tires has been conventionally performed by either neglecting tread pattern or modeling only circumferential grooves. Besides, the tire analysis has been mainly limited to static or steady state rolling analysis. In this paper, a transient dynamic analysis of a patterned tire rolling over a cleat with an explicit finite element program is presented. The patterned tire with detailed tread blocks is modeled by a systematic mesh generation procedure, in which tire body and tread pattern meshes are separately generated in the beginning and then both meshes are combined by the tie constraint method. The cleat impact analysis is conducted by using both the patterned tire and the smooth tire models to predict the cleat enveloping characteristics. It is seen that the analysis results of the patterned tire model are in a good agreement with the experimental results.

  • Korean Space Launch Vehicle (KSLV-II) Propellant Supply System charges liquid oxygen and kerosene to each propellant tank for the stages. To charge the launch vehicle propellant tank safety, the propellant charge flow rates and scenarios should be defined. First, the Propellant Supply System was modeled with 1D flow analysis program. The control valve capacity and orifice size were calculated by performing the 1D steady state simulation. Second, the 1D transient simulation was performed by using the steady state simulation results. As propellants were being charged at the each tank, the increased tank liquid level decreases the charge flow rate. Consequently, the proposed supply system satisfies the required design charging conditions.

  • Several numerical or analytical models have been proposed to analyze the thermal response of vertical ground heat exchangers (GHEX). However, most models are valid only after several hours of operation since they neglect the heat capacity of the borehole. Recently, the short time response of the GHEX became important in system simulation to improve efficiency. In this paper, a simple new method to evaluate the short time response of the GHEX by using an analogy model of electric circuit transient analysis was presented. The new transient heat exchanger model adopting the concept of thermal capacitance of the borehole as well as the steady-state thermal resistance showed the transient thermal resistance of the borehole. The model was validated by in-situ thermal response test and then compared with the DST model of the TRNSYS program.

  • This paper deals with the transient analysis of an amplidyne dc voltage regulating system under the following conditions: (1) assuming all the components of the system to be linear, (2) considering the effect of amplidyne saturation. The mathematical technique employed is state variables method. The calculated response curves are compared with the experimental results obtained on a practical system. The main results can be summerized as follows: 1) The effect of amplidyne saturation on the transient response of a dc voltage regulating system is to reduce the overshoot and setting time. 2) With the increase in level of the step reference voltage, the system response becomes apesiodic. 3) The steady output voltage is reduced appreciably compared to the linear case.

  • KANT (KAIST Advanced Nuclear Tachygraphy) is a PWR core simulator recently developed at Korea Advance Institute of Science and Technology, which solves three-dimensional steady-state and transient multigroup neutron diffusion equations under Cartesian geometries alongside the incorporation of thermal-hydraulics feedback effect for multi-physics calculation. It utilizes the standard Nodal Expansion Method (NEM) accelerated with various Coarse Mesh Finite Difference (CMFD) methods for neutronics calculation. For thermal-hydraulics (TH) calculation, a single-phase flow model and a one-dimensional cylindrical fuel rod heat conduction model are employed. The time-dependent neutronics and TH calculations are numerically solved through an implicit Euler scheme, where a detailed coupling strategy is presented in this paper alongside a description of nodal equivalence, macroscopic depletion, and pin power reconstruction. For validation of the steady, transient, and depletion calculation with pin power reconstruction capacity of KANT, solutions for various benchmark problems are presented. The IAEA 3-D PWR and 4-group KOEBERG problems were considered for the steady-state reactor benchmark problem. For transient calculations, LMW (Lagenbuch, Maurer and Werner) LWR and NEACRP 3-D PWR benchmarks were solved, where the latter problem includes thermal-hydraulics feedback. For macroscopic depletion with pin power reconstruction, a small PWR problem modified with KAIST benchmark model was solved. For validation of the multi-physics analysis capability of KANT concerning large-sized PWRs, the BEAVRS Cycle1 benchmark has been considered. It was found that KANT solutions are accurate and consistent compared to other published works.

  • Heat pipe cooled reactors have gained attention as a potential solution for nuclear power generation in space and deep sea applications because of their simple design, scalability, safety and reliability. However, under complex operating conditions, a control strategy for variable load operation is necessary. This paper presents a two-dimensional transient characteristics analysis program for a heat pipe cooled reactor and proposes a variable load control strategy using the recuperator bypass (CSURB). The program was verified against previous studies, and steady-state and step-load operating conditions were calculated. For normal operating condition, the predicted temperature distribution with constant heat pipe temperature boundary conditions agrees well with the literature, with a maximum temperature difference of 0.4 K. With the implementation of the control strategy using the recuperator bypass (CSURB) proposed in this paper, it becomes feasible to achieve variable load operation and return the system to a steady state solely through the self-regulation of the reactor, without the need to operate the control drum. The average temperature difference of the fuel does not exceed 1 % at the four power levels of 70 %,80 %, 90 % and 100 % Full power. The output power of the turbine can match the load change process, and the temperature difference between the inlet and outlet of the turbine increases as the power decreases.

  • OF cable with excellent reliability and economic efficiency, has been used as the main cable of underground transmission in Korea. However, as XLPE cable is excellent in view points such as reduction of loss, convenience on the construction/operation, and manufacturing technology, it has been replaced as instead of OF cable. Also, when the aging occurs in some sections of OF cable, the section is replaced as XLPE cable without changing of whole cable line. However, there are some differences like electrical constants between both types of cables. Therefore if underground transmission system will be operated as combined connection composited of both cables, it should be proved that overvoltage is stable in steady and transient state. This paper describes the effectiveness of connection operation in combined OF and XLPE cable. For the evaluation of effectiveness, some important analysis such as sheath component voltage, lightning and switching overvoltage, single line-to-ground fault are carried out in steady and transient state. EMTP/ATPDraw is used for modeling and analysis of system.

  • The boundary element method is applied to determine thermal stress intensity factors for a cusp crack in transient state. In the steady temperature field, numerical values of thermal stress intensity factors for a Grifith crack and a symmetric lip cusp crack in a finite body are in good agreement within .+-. 5% with the previous solutions. In transient state, the numerical values of thermal stress intensity factors for the Griffith crack are also in good agreement with the pervious solutions. In both steady and transient states, those for the symmetric lip cusp crack with the crack surface insulated or fixed to the constant temperature are calculates for various effective crack lengths, configuration parameters and uniform heat flow angles. The variations of the thermal boundary conditions of the crack surface have a effect on stress intensity factors. The signs on the values of thermal stress intensity factors can be changed in time variation.
