In this study, the start-up characteristics of a staged combustion engine were analyzed numerically based on relational equation modeling of the entire engine components. The start-up characteristics were extensively analyzed considering the transient period of the total engine system from the start-up sequence till the steady-state of the engine. The performance characteristics of the engine components such as RPM of engine power-pack, chamber pressure and O/F ratio of pre-burner, and mass flow of propellants in the start-up period were investigated. Furthermore, the calculated engine data were compared satisfactorily with the experimental data. Through the comparison of data, successful validation of present engine start-up analysis has been obtained.
The water transport and water content of the electrolyte membrane greatly affect the performance of the membrane in PEMFC(Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell). In this study, the parameters (electroosmotic coefficient, water diffusion coefficient) of polymer membranes for water transport were measured by a simple method, and water flux and ion conductivity were simulated by using a model equation. One dimensional steady state model equation was constructed by using only the electro-osmosis and diffusion as the driving force of water transport. The governing equations were simulated with MATLAB. The electro-osmotic coefficient of $144{\mu}m$ thick polymer membranes was measured in hydrogen pumping cell, the value was 1.11. The water diffusion coefficient was expressed as a function of relative humidity and the activation energy for water diffusion was $2,889kJ/mol{\cdot}K$. The water flux and ion conductivity results simulated by applying these coefficients showed good agreement with the experimental data.
Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI) has been operating an integral effects test facility, the Advanced Thermal-Hydraulic Test Loop for Accident Simulation (ATLAS), according to APR1400 for transient experimental and design basis accident simulation. Moreover, based on the experimental data, the domestic standard problem (DSP) program has been conducted in Korea to validate system codes. Recently, through DSP-05, the performance of the passive auxiliary feedwater system (PAFS) in the event of multiple steam generator tube rupture (MSGTR) has been analyzed. However, some errors exist in the reference input model distributed for DSP-05. Furthermore, the calculation results of the heat loss correlation for the secondary system presented in the technical report of the reference indicate that a large difference is present in heat loss from the target value. Thus, in this study, the reference model is corrected using the geometric information from the design report and drawings of ATLAS. Additionally, a new heat loss correlation is suggested by fitting the results of the heat loss tests. Herein, MSGTR-PAFS accident analysis is performed using MARS-KS 1.5 with the improved model. The steady-state calculation results do not significantly differ from the experimental values, and the overall physical behavior of the transient state is properly predicted. Particularly, the predicted operating time of PAFS is similar to the experimental results obtained by the modified model. Furthermore, the operating time of PAFS varies according to the heat loss of the secondary system, and the sensitivity analysis results for the heat loss of the secondary system are presented.
Background: This study aims to figure out the gaps in health status by estimating amenable mortality rate by region, reflecting the characteristics of Korea, and estimating the years of life lost (YLL) per capita by disease. Methods: People who died from amenable diseases between 2008 and 2018 were extracted from the cause of death statistics provided by Statistics Korea. The age-standardized amenable mortality rates were estimated to compare the health status of 229 regions. YLL per capita was calculated to compute the burden of diseases caused by treatable deaths by region. The YLL per capita by region was calculated to identify the burden of disease caused by amenable deaths. Results: First, while the annual amenable mortality rate in Korea is on a steady decline, but there is still a considerable gap between urban and rural areas when comparing the mortality rates of 229 areas. Second, YLL per capita due to the amenable deaths is approximately 14 person-years during the analysis period (2008-2018). Conclusion: Although the health status of Koreans has continuously improved, there is still a gap in health status region by region in terms of amenable mortality rates. Amenable death accounts for a loss of life equivalent to 14 person-years per year. Since the amenable mortality rate is an indicator that can measure the performance of the health care system, efforts at each local area are required to lower it.

This paper proposes an operating frequency design method that limits the voltage applied to aload-side converter during the initial operation of a loosely coupled resonant dual-active bridge (LCR-DAB) converter and an initial operating strategy that applies it. The LCR-DAB converter uses two wireless power transfer coils instead of the high-frequency transformer of the general DAB converter. The wireless power coil has a physical distance of several tens of millimeter or more between the two coils; thus, the LCR-DAB converter is a bidirectional isolated power conversion system that can easily achieve high insulation performance. However, for the initial operation of the LCR-DAB, if the power-side converter is operated at the resonance frequency while the load-side converter is not operating, then a very high voltage due to resonance is applied to the load-side converter, thereby causing damage to the converter. Therefore, a method that can stably charge the DC link voltage of the secondary-side converter during the initial operation is needed. This paper proposes a method to initially charge the secondary-side DC link by operating the primary-side converter at a frequency with limited voltage gain rather than at a steady-state operating frequency. The validity of the proposed frequency design method and initial operating sequence is verified through simulation and experimentation of the 1 KW LCR-DAB converter.

As the demand for high-rise buildings increases, the demand for high-speed elevators is also increasing. In order to make a high-speed elevator, a method is needed to reduce the weight of the elevator's components, which is a constraint on the increase in speed. As a measure to reduce the weight, it is possible to remove the traveling cable for power and signal supply. Since the weight of the traveling cable varies depending on the position of the carriage, it is difficult to compensate the weight using the counter weight. The power supply is a structure in which a brush-rail type power input terminal is installed in the elevator hoistway to receive power in a contact-type manner while the carriage is moving. If a small-capacity ESS is installed in a passenger car, power can be supplied uninterruptedly inside the passenger car. A small-capacity ESS charging system to be applied to such an elevator system is required to perform several functions. First, the passenger Car must be able to charge as much as possible even during high-speed operation. A control algorithm with high responsiveness is required because charging starts and ends repeatedly by the partially installed input power stage. In addition, if the input-side line impedance is large due to the structure of the system and the response characteristic is increased, the stability of the system may be lowered. Accordingly, in this paper, we propose a control algorithm that has a stable steady-state output while having a fast response in a transient state. To verify the proposed control algorithm, simulation was conducted using PSIM, and the performance of the controller was verified by manufacturing a prototype buck conveter charger.

In a group-testing method, instead of testing a sample, for example, blood individually, a batch of samples are pooled and tested simultaneously. If the pooled test is positive (or defective), each sample is tested individually. However, if negative (or good), the test is terminated at one pooled test because all samples in the batch are negative. This paper considers a queueing system with a two-stage group-testing policy. Samples arrive at the system according to a Poisson process. The system has a single server which starts a two-stage group test in a batch whenever the number of samples in the system reaches exactly a predetermined size. In the first stage, samples are pooled and tested simultaneously. If the pooled test is negative, the test is terminated. However, if positive, the samples are divided into two equally sized subgroups and each subgroup is applied to a group test in the second stage, respectively. The server performs pooled tests and individual tests sequentially. The testing time of a sample and a batch follow general distributions, respectively. In this paper, we derive the steady-state probability generating function of the system size at an arbitrary time, applying a bulk queuing model. In addition, we present queuing performance metrics such as the offered load, output rate, allowable input rate, and mean waiting time. In numerical examples with various prevalence rates, we show that the second-stage group-testing system can be more efficient than a one-stage group-testing system or an individual-testing system in terms of the allowable input rates and the waiting time. The two-stage group-testing system considered in this paper is very simple, so it is expected to be applicable in the field of COVID-19.

Genomic analysis indicated that the genome of Drosophila melanogaster contains more than 80 cytochrome P450 genes. To date, the enzymatic activity of these P450s has not been extensively studied. Here, the biochemical properties of CYP6A8 were characterized. CYP6A8 was cloned into the pCW vector, and its recombinant enzyme was expressed in Escherichia coli and purified using Ni2+-nitrilotriacetate affinity chromatography. Its expression level was approximately 130 nmol per liter of culture. Purified CYP6A8 exhibited a low-spin state in the absolute spectra of the ferric forms. Binding titration analysis indicated that lauric acid and capric acid produced type I spectral changes, with Kd values 28 ± 4 and 144 ± 20 µM, respectively. Ultra-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis showed that the oxidation reaction of lauric acid produced (ω-1)-hydroxylated lauric acid as a major product and ω-hydroxy-lauric acid as a minor product. Steady-state kinetic analysis of lauric acid hydroxylation yielded a kcat value of 0.038 ± 0.002 min-1 and a Km value of 10 ± 2 µM. In addition, capric acid hydroxylation of CYP6A8 yielded kinetic parameters with a kcat value of 0.135 ± 0.007 min-1 and a Km value of 21 ± 4 µM. Because of the importance of various lipids as carbon sources, the metabolic analysis of fatty acids using CYP6A8 in this study can provide an understanding of the biochemical roles of P450 enzymes in many insects, including Drosophila melanogaster.
The simulator models for 500MW fossil power plant have been developed, and interconnected with the turbine control system to test and validate the digital instrumentation & control (I&C) systems before they are implemented in operating power plants. When the performance of a selected digital I&C system is tested, the corresponding simulator model is replaced by the plant digital I&C systems which is considered as a non-tunable system. The input/out variables of simulator models and control systems were mapped using the LabView in interface systems. This paper describes the interconnection method between the simulator model and the digital I&C system, and summarizes the validation test results performed at the condition of steady-state operation, normal evolution, and malfunction. The integrated validation method of digital I&C systems using the simulator models showed that the simulator can be used as a test bed for the implementation of digital I&C systems in power plants.
One of the economical ways to satisfy the quality of service desired by the user in a web service environment is to adjust the size of the object. To this end, this study finds the maximum size of objects that satisfy this constraint when the mean response time is given below an arbitrary threshold for quality of service. It can be inferred that in the steady state of system, the mean response time in the deterministic model by using the round-robin will be the same as that of the queueing model following the general distribution. Based on this, analytical formulas and procedures for finding the maximum object size are obtained. As a service distribution of web traffic, the Pareto distribution is appropriate, so the maximum object size is computed by applying the M/G(Pareto)/1 model and the M/G/1/PS model using exponential distribution as computational experience. Performance evaluation through numerical calculation shows that as the shape parameter in the Pareto distribution increases, the M/G(Pareto)/1 model and M/G/1/PS model have the same maximum object size. The results of this study can be used to environments where objects can be sized for economical web service control.
