A Penalized Principal Component Analysis using Simulated Annealing

  • Variable selection algorithm for principal component analysis using penalty function is proposed. We use the fact that usual principal component problem can be expressed as a maximization problem with appropriate constraints and we will add penalty function to this maximization problem. Simulated annealing algorithm is used in searching for optimal solutions with penalty functions. Comparisons between several well-known penalty functions through simulation reveals that the HARD penalty function should be suggested as the best one in several aspects. Illustrations with real and simulated examples are provided.

Efficient simulation using saddlepoint approximation for aggregate losses with large frequencies

  • Aggregate claim amounts with a large claim frequency represent a major concern to automobile insurance companies. In this paper, we show that a new hybrid method to combine the analytical saddlepoint approximation and Monte Carlo simulation can be an efficient computational method. We provide numerical comparisons between the hybrid method and the usual Monte Carlo simulation.

  • This paper provides a method of obtaining a lower bound on the probability of correct selection for a two-stage selection procedure. The resulting lower bound sharpens that by Tamhane and Bechhofer (1979) for the normal means problem with a common known variance. The design constants associated with the lower bound are computed and the results of the performance comparisons are given.

A Bayesian Test Criterion for the Multivariate Behrens-Fisher Problem

  • An approximate Bayes criterion for multivariate Behrens-Fisher problem is proposed and examined. Development of the criterion involves derivation of approximate Bayes factor using the imaginary training sample approach introduced by Speigelhalter and Smith (1982). The criterion is designed to develop a Bayesian test, so that it provides an alternative test to other tests based upon asymptotic sampling theory (such as the tests suggested by Bennett(1951), James(1954) and Yao(1965). For the derived criterion, numerical studies demonstrate routine application and give comparisons with the classical tests.

  • A Bayes criterion for testing the equality of covariance matrices of two multivariate normal distributions is proposed and studied. Development of the criterion invloves calculation of Bayes factor using the imaginary sample method introduced by Spiegelhalter and Smith (1982). The criterion is designed to develop a Bayesian test criterion, so that it provides an alternative test criterion to those based upon asymptotic sampling theory (such as Box's M test criterion). For the constructed criterion, numerical studies demonstrate routine application and give comparisons with the traditional test criteria.

  • Three remarks are offered, pertaining to classes of estimators Pitman-dominating a given estimator. The first remark concerns incorporating general loss in the construction of such classes.   • The characteristics of $I{\lambda}$-optimality are investigated with repsect to other experimental design's criteria, D-and G-optimality. The comparisons are based on D- and G-, and $I{\lambda}$-efficiencies using the Beta(p, q) distribution as a weighting function for $I{\lambda}$-optimality. Results indicate that serious consideration should be given to the $I{\lambda}$-optimality criterion especially when the error variance function is not homogeneous.

  • If the completely observed data are assumed to have full information, the censoring causes the loss of information. Previous studies have introduced the indices of information loss via measuring relative changes between the data with censoring and without censoring. In this paper, the comparisons are made for the information loss between type I and type II censoring in two sample problems.

  • The purpose of this paper is to investigate the properties of order statistics under various stochastic relations. We study the stochastic comparison of order statistics in a single sample. And we consider two sample case too. For example, F(t) > G9t) for t > 0 when X and Y are random variables symmetric about 0, with c.d.f.s F and G. Two examples are provided.

  • We consider nonparametric procedures for the selection and ranking problems. Tukey's generalized lambda distribution is condidered as the distribution for the score function because the distribution can approximate many well-known contionuous distributions. Also we compare these procedures in terms of efficiency, defined by the ratio of a probability of a correct selection divided by the expected selected subset size.
