  • This study aims to investigate the residual strength of sandwich composites with Al honeycomb core and carbon fiber face sheets after the quasi-static indentation damage by the experimental investigation. The 3-point bending test and the edge-wise compressive strength test were used to find the mechanical properties, and the quasi-static point load was applied to introduce the simulated damage on the specimen. The damaged specimens were finally assessed by the 3-point bending test and the compressive strength test. The investigation results revealed the residual strength of the damaged specimens due to the quasi-static indentation. The both test results showed that the residual strength of the damaged specimen was decreased according to increases of the damaged depth.

  • In this paper, static compressive test and compression-compression fatigue test of carbon/epoxy composites which have different micro-structures were carried out with respect to the bias angle. In order to find out the effect of the micro-structure of the fabric composite on compressive characteristics the specimens made of UD carbon/epoxy composite comprising the same fiber and matrix system as the fabric composite were also prepared. The compressive strength and modulus were measured and these values were used to develop a semi-empirical formula for predicting compressive strength of the fabric composite with bias angles. The fatigue behavior of the fabric composite with respect to the bias angle variation was also investigated.

  • The paper investigates the relationships between dynamic elastic modulus and static elastic modulus or compressive strength according to curing temperature, aging, and cement type. Based on this investigation, the new model equations are proposed. Impact echo method estimates the resonant frequency of specimens and uniaxial compression test measures the static elastic modulus and compressive strength. Type I and V cement concretes, which have the water-cement ratios of 0.40 and 0.50, are cured under the isothermal curing temperature of 10, 23, and 50 $^{\circ}C$. Cement type and aging have no large influence on the relationship between dynamic and static elastic modulus, but the ratio of dynamic and static elastic modulus comes close to 1 as temperature increases. Initial chord elastic modulus, which is calculated at lower strain level of stress-strain curve, has the similar value to dynamic elastic modulus. The relationship between dynamic elastic modulus and compressive strength has the same tendency as the relationship between dynamic and static elastic modulus. The proposed relationship equations between dynamic elastic modulus and static elastic modulus or compressive strength properly estimates the variation of relationships according to cement type, temperature, and aging.

  • The performance evaluation and deflection of 3 spans concrete simplicity slab bridge analyzed by non-destructive and loading test. Compressive strength of slab and pier appeared in the range of each 353∼366 kgf/$cm^2$ and 152∼215 kgf/$cm^2$ in rebound number test. Also, it appeared that concrete quality of slab was good after performance improvement. The average compressive strength of slab by core picking appeared 229 kg/$cm^2$. In reinforcing bar arrangement test of span and member, it appeared that horizontal and vertical reinforcing bar was arranged to fixed interval. The value of calculation deflection that carried structural analysis with deflection analysis wave in static loading test appeared higher than that of experimental deflection and it appeared that hardness of this bridge was good. Maximum impact factor that estimated from deflection by running speed in dynamic loading test appeared by 0.216 in 10 km/hr running speed.

  • The compressive stress-strain response of Low Density Polyurethane foam material is modeled using the finite element method. A constitutive equation which include experimental constants based on quasi-static and dynamic uniaxial compression test is proposed. Impact test with different impactor masses and velocities are performed to verify the proposed model. The comparison between impact test and finite element analysis shows good agreements.

  • PURPOSE. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of implant thread depth on primary stability in low density bone. MATERIALS AND METHODS. The insertion torque was measured by inserting Ti implants with different thread depths into solid rigid polyurethane blocks (Sawbones) with three different bone densities ($0.16g/cm^3$, $0.24g/cm^3$, and $0.32g/cm^3$). The insertion torque value was evaluated with a surgical engine. The static compressive strength was measured with a universal testing machine (UTM) and the Ti implants were aligned at $30^{\circ}$ against the loading direction of the UTM. After the static compressive strength test, the Ti implants were analyzed with a Measurescope. RESULTS. The Ti implants with deeper thread depth showed statistically higher mean insertion torque values (P<.001). Groups A and group B had similar maximum static compressive strengths, as did groups C and D (P>.05). After the static compressive strength, the thread shape of the Ti implants with deeper thread depth did not show any breakage but did show deformation of the implant body and abutment. CONCLUSION. The implants with deeper thread depth had higher mean insertion torque values but not lower compressive strength. The deep threads had a mechanical stability. Implants with deeper thread depth may increase the primary stability in areas of poor quality bone without decreasing mechanical strength.

  • This paper describes the results of structural test and finite element analysis for rubber wheel-type Automatic Guideway Transit(AGT) made of aluminum honeycomb sandwich composites with WR580/NF4000 glass-fabric epoxy laminate face sheets. The static tests of vehicle structure were conducted according to JIS E7l05. These static tests have been done under vertical load, compressive load and 3-point support load. The structural integrity of AGT vehicle structure was evaluated by displacement, stress obtained from LVDT and strain gauges, and natural frequency. And finite element analysis using Ansys v11.0 was done to compare with the results of static test. The result showed that the results of structural integrity for static test were in an good agreement with these of finite element analysis.

  • Dynamic and static analyses of existing structures are very important to obtain reliable information relating to actual structural properties. For this purpose a series of material test, dynamic test and static collapse test of the existing two brick chimneys, in Tokoname, are carried out. From the material tests, Young's modulus and compressive strength of the brick used for these chimneys are estimated to be 3200 MPa and 7.5 MPa, respectively. The results of static collapse test of the existing two brick chimneys are discussed in this paper and composed with the results from FEA (Finite Element analysis). From the results of dynamic tests, the fundamental frequencies of Howa and Iwata brick chimneys are estimated to be about 2.69 Hz and 2.93 Hz, respectively. Their natural modes are identified by ARMAV (Autoregressive Moving Average Vectors) model. On the basis of the static and dynamic experimental tests, a numerical model has been prepared. According to the European code (Eurocode n. 8: "Design of structures for earthquake resistance") non-linear static (Pushover) analysis of the two chimneys is carried out and they seem to be vulnerable to earthquakes with 0.25 to 0.35 g.

  • Fatigue test was conducted on a S45C steel using hour-glass shaped smooth tubular specimen under biaxial loading in order to investigate the crack formation and growth at room temperature. Three types of loading system, i.e fully reserved cyclic torsion without a superimposed static tension or compression, fully reserved cyclic torsion with a superimposed static tension and fully reserved cyclic torsion with a superimposed static compression were employed. The test results show that a superimposed static tensile mean stress reduced fatigue lifetime. however a superimposed static compressive mean stress increased fatigue lifetime. Experimental results indicated that cracks were initiated on planes of maximum shear strain with either a superimposed mean stresses or not. A biaxial mean stress had an effect on the direction which cracks nucleated and propagated at stage I (mode II).
