  • The dependence of the rheological properties of blood on shape, aggregation, and deformability of red blood cells (RBCs) has been investigated using hybrid systems by coupling fluid with solid models. We present a simple approach for simulating blood as a multi-component fluid, in which RBCs are modeled as droplets of acquired biconcave shape. We used lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) due to its excellent numerical stability as a simulation tool. The model enables us to control the droplet static shape by imposing non-isotropic surface tension force on the interface between the two components. The use of the proposed non-isotropic surface tension method is justified by the Norris hypothesis. This hypothesis states that the shape of the RBC is due to a non-uniform interfacial surface tension force acting on the RBC periphery. This force is caused by the unbalanced distribution of the lipid molecules on the surface of the RBC. We also used the same concept to investigate the dynamic shape change of the RBC while flowing through the microvasculature, and to explore the physics of the Fahraeus, and the Fahraeus-Lindqvist effects.

  • The texts of "Hwangjenaegyeong(黃帝內經)" explains Hakjil(瘧疾) in detail, especially in the "Jahak(刺瘧)" chapter, where bloodletting treatment is applied in many cases. The following paper categorized and organized Hakjil(瘧疾) cases treated by bloodletting methods, then analyzed applicable subjects and appropriate time for the procedure based on the texts. Afterwards, the mechanism for the cessation of Hakjil(瘧疾) seizures was examined. The findings of this research are as follows. 1. In the contents of "Hwangjenaegyeong(黃帝內經)", the appropriate time for acupuncture and bloodletting procedure is when Hakjil(瘧疾) seizures start to present themselves. 2. When a seizure takes place as a symptom of the body getting rid of the Hak(瘧) pathogen, Yanggi(陽氣) rushes to the locus of the pathogen, causing congestion of Gi(氣) and Blood(血) resulting in static blood[瘀血]. Therefore, bloodletting at the time of seizure initiation helps the flow of Gi(氣) and Blood(血), preventing the rush of Yanggi(陽氣). This is a restoration of the balancing function of Eum(陰) and Yang(陽), which indicates that bloodletting not only promotes smooth flow of Gi(氣) and Blood(血), but extends its effects to mental functions that balances Eum(陰) and Yang(陽). 3. Although Hakjil(瘧疾) seizures are presented in terms of Gi(氣) and Blood(血) in symptoms such as chill and fever[寒熱], static blood[瘀血], pain, etc., a fundamental disturbance in mental functions that control cold and heat seems to be present.

  • The rupture of blood vessels in the human brain results in serious pathological and medical problems. In particular, brain hemorrhage and hematomas resulting from impact to the head are a major cause of death. As such, investigating the tensile behavior and rupture of blood vessels in the brain is very important from a medical point of view. In the present study, the tensile characteristics of the blood vessels in the human brain were analyzed using a quasi-static uniaxial tensile test, and the properties of the arteries and veins compared. In addition, to compare the tensile behavior and demonstrate the validity of the experimental results, blood vessels from the legs of pigs were also tested and analyzed. The overall results were in accordance with the histological structures and previous medical reports.

  • This article is a study on to which categories of modern diseases qi deficiency pattern types are assigned by reference to modern clinical papers to analyze and understand modern diseases with the perspective of Korean Medicine. Clinical papers were searched in China Academic Journals(CAJ) of China National Knowledge Infrastructure(CNKI) from 1994 to 2013. Conclusions are as follows. First, qi deficiency pattern types are roughly classified as qi deficiency pattern, qi-yin dual deficiency pattern and qi deficiency pattern related with viscera and bowels. Second, there are many patterns combined with static blood, qi stagnation, phlegm, dampness, heat, toxin, water or fluid deficiency and the level of pattern designation is more specific than pattern types in Korean Standard Classification of Diseases(KCD), which makes the pattern types more useful to clinical application. Third, static blood due to qi deficiency is the most frequent combined pattern and diseases related with blood circulation such as angina, atherosclerosis, hyperlipidemia and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease(COPD) were reported on that pattern. The detailed relation between modern diseases and pattern types can be an another topic.

  • One of the key technologic requirements for rotary blood pumps is the sealing of the motor shaft. A mechanical seal, a journal bearing, magnetic coupling, and magnetic suspension have been developed, but they have drawbacks such as wear, thrombus formation, and power consumption. A magnetic fluid seal is durable, simple, and non power consumptive. Long-term experiments confirmed these advantages. The seal body was composed of a Nd-Fe-B magnet and two pole pieces; the seal was formed by injecting magnetic fluid into the gap (50${\mu}m$) between the pole pieces and the motor shaft. To contain the ferro-fluid in the seal and to minimize the possibility of magnetic fluid making contact with blood, a shield with a small cavity was attached to the pole piece. While submerged in blood, the sealing pressure of the seal was measured and found to be 31kPa with magnetic fluid LS-40 (saturated magnetization, 24.3 KA/m) at a motor speed of 10,000 rpm and 53kPa under static conditions(0mmHg). The specially designed magnetic fluid seal for keeping liquids out is useful for axial flow blood pumps. The magnetic fluid seal was incorporated into an intra-cardiac axial flow blood pump.
