  • The optimum design of most structural systems used in practice requires considering design variables as discrete quantities. The present paper shows that the linear approximation method is very effective as a tool for the discrete optimum designs of unsymmetric composite laminates. The formulated design problem is subjected to a multiple in-plane loading condition due to shear and axial forces, bending and twisting moments, which is controlled by maximum strain criterion for each of the plys of a composite laminate. As an initial approach, the process of continuous variable optimization by FDM is required only once in operating discrete optimization. The nonlinear discrete optimization problem that has the discrete and continuous variables is transformed into the mixed integer programming problem by SLDP. In numerical examples, the discrete optimum solutions for the unsymmetric composite laminates consisted of six plys according to rotated stacking sequence were found, and then compared the results with the nonlinear branch and bound method to verify the efficiency of present method.

  • Although printing technology has recently been widely used in IT fields including displays and fuel cells, residual and thermal stress are generated by a manufacturing process of stacking the layers of the print head and result in the substrate deformation and nozzle plate crack, which may cause ink leaks or not be ejected onto a desired region. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a new design of thermal inkjet print head with a robust and reliable structure. Diverse types of inkjet print head such as a rib, pillar, support wall and individual feed hole are designed to reduce the deformation of the substrate and nozzle plate, and their feasibility is numerically investigated through FEA analysis. The numerical results show that the maximum stress and deformation of proposed print head dramatically drops to at least 40~50%, and it is confirmed that there is no nozzle plate cracks and ink leakage through the fabrication of pillar and support wall typed print head. Therefore, it is expected that the proposed head shape can be applied not only to ink ejection in the normal direction, but also to large-area printing technology.

  • In this study, wind characteristics of a shipping container were investigated through the wind tunnel test (high-frequency force balance test), and damage occurrence velocities of various containers with weights were evaluated based on results of the wind tunnel tests. As a result, mean wind force coefficients acting on containers in x-direction increased in the order of 12ft, 20ft, 40ft and 40ft high cube. On the other hand, mean wind force coefficients at y-direction increased in the order of 40ft high cube, 40ft, 20ft and 12ft. It was suggested that the shear layer separated from the corner of windward surface of the container is reattached on the sides of it, and then the mean wind force coefficient is weaker. As a result of the damage occurrence velocity on containers with weights, it was found that the probability of occurrence of sliding is higher rather than that of overturning. Further, the most unfavorable container was 40ft high cube, and the sliding and overturning occurrence velocities were 20.4 m/s and 26.8 m/s, respectively. Furthermore, the regression formula for sliding and overturing occurrence velocitys were proposed based on the results of relationship between weights of containers and damage occurrence velocities. These results are expected to be useful in establishing a guideline for external force estimation acting on container securing equipment and stacking way.

  • Kilauea Volcano is one of the most active volcano in the world. In this study, we used the ALOS-2 PALSAR-2 satellite imagery to measure the surface deformation occurring near the summit of the Kilauea volcano from 2015 to 2017. In order to measure two-dimensional surface deformation, interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) and multiple aperture SAR interferometry (MAI) methods were performed using two interferometric pairs. To improve the precision of 2D measurement, we compared root-mean-squared deviation (RMSD) of the difference of measurement value as we change the effective antenna length and normalized squint value, which are factors that can affect the measurement performance of the MAI method. Through the compare, the values of the factors, which can measure deformation most precisely, were selected. After select optimal values of the factors, the RMSD values of the difference of the MAI measurement were decreased from 4.07 cm to 2.05 cm. In each interferograms, the maximum deformation in line-of-sight direction is -28.6 cm and -27.3 cm, respectively, and the maximum deformation in the along-track direction is 20.2 cm and 20.8 cm, in the opposite direction is -24.9 cm and -24.3 cm, respectively. After stacking the two interferograms, two-dimensional surface deformation mapping was performed, and a maximum surface deformation of approximately 30.4 cm was measured in the northwest direction. In addition, large deformation of more than 20 cm were measured in all directions. The measurement results show that the risk of eruption activity is increasing in Kilauea Volcano. The measurements of the surface deformation of Kilauea volcano from 2015 to 2017 are expected to be helpful for the study of the eruption activity of Kilauea volcano in the future.

  • One of the most critical issues in sol id oxide fuel cell (SOFC)running on hydrocarbon fuels is the risk of carbon formation from the fuel gas. The simple method to reduce the risk of carbon formation from the reactions is to add steam to the fuel stream, leading to the carbon gasification react ion. However, the addition of steam to fuel is not appropriate for the auxiliary power unit (APU) and potable power generation (PPG) systems due to an increase of complexity and bulkiness. In this regard, many researchers have focused on so-called 'direct methane' operation of SOFC, which works with dry methane without coking. However, coking can be suppressed only by the operation with a high current density, which may be a drawback especially for the APU and PPG systems. The single chamber fuel cell (SC-SOFC) is a novel simplification of the conventional SOFC into which a premixed fuel/air mixture is introduced. It relies on the selectivity of the anode and cathode catalysts to generate a chemical potential gradient across the cell. Moreover it allows compact and seal-free stack design. In this study, we fabricated honeycomb type mixed-gas fuel cell (MGFC) which has advantages of stacking to the axial direction and increasing volume power density. Honeycomb-structured SOFC with four channels was prepared by dry pressing method. Two alternative channels were coated with electrolyte and cathode slurry in order to make cathodic reaction sites. We will discuss that the anode supported honeycomb type cell running on mixed gas condition.

  • Recently, the importance of electronic packaging technology has been attracting attention, and heterogeneous integration technology in which chips are stacked out-of-plane direction is being applied to the electronic packaging field. The 2.5D integration circuit is a technology for stacking chips using an interposer including TSV, and is widely used already. Therefore, it is necessary to make the interposer mechanically reliable in the packaging process that undergoes various thermal processes and mechanical loadings. Considering the structural characteristics of the interposer on which several thin films are deposited, thermal stress due to the difference in thermal expansion coefficients of materials can have a great effect on reliability. In this study, the mechanical reliability of the metal pad for wire bonding on the silicon interposer against thermal stress was evaluated. After heating the interposer to the solder reflow temperature, the delamination of the metal pad that occurred during cooling was observed and the mechanism was investigated. In addition, it was confirmed that the high cooling rate and the defect caused by handling promote delamination of the metal pads.

  • Triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) devices have generated a lot of interest in recent decades. TENG technology, which is one of the technologies for harvesting mechanical energy among the energy wasted in the environment, is obtained by the dual effect of electrostatic induction and triboelectric charging. Recently, a multilayer thin film stacking method (or layer-by-layer (LbL) self-assembly technique) is being considered as a method to improve the performance of TENG and apply it to new fields. This LbL assembly technology can not only improve the performance of TENG and successfully overcome the thickness problem in applications, but also present an inexpensive, environmentally friendly process and be used for large-scale and mass production. In this review, recent studies in the accomplishment of LbL-based materials for TENG devices are reviewed, and the potential for energy harvesting devices reviewed so far is checked. The advantages of the TENG device fabricated by applying the LbL technology are discussed, and finally, the direction and perspective of this fabrication technology for the implementation of various ultra-thin TENGs are briefly presented.

  • The vibration characteristics of composite stiffened laminated plates with stiffener is presented using the assumed natural strain 9-node shell element. To compare with previous research, the stiffened plates are composed of carbon-epoxy composite laminate with a symmetric stacking sequence. Also, the result of the present shell model for the stiffener made of composite material is compared with that of the beam model. In the case of torsionally weak stiffener, a local buckling occurs in the stiffener. In this case, the stiffener should be idealized by using the shell elements. The current investigation concentrates upon the vibration analysis of rectangular stiffened and unstiffened composite plates when subjected to the in-plane compression and shear loads. The in-plane compression affect the natural frequencies and mode shapes of the stiffened laminated composite plates and the increase in magnitude of the in-plane compressive load reduces the natural frequencies, which will become zero when the in-plane load is equal to the critical buckling load of the plate. The natural frequencies of composite stiffened plates with shear loads exhibit the higher values than the case of without shear loads. Also, the intersection, between the curves of frequencies against in-plane loads, interchanges the sequence of some of the mode shapes as a result of the increase in the inplane compressive load. The results are compared with those available in the literature and this result shows that the present shell model for the stiffened plate gives more accurate results. Therefore, the magnitude, direction type of the in-plane shear and compressive loads in laminated composite stiffened plates should be selected properly to control the specific frequency and mode shape. The Lanczos method is employed to solve the eigenvalue problems.
