Present investigation shows the analysis results for ceramic reinforced metal matrix composite under uniaxial transverse tensile loading. The resulting deformation, the projected damage type, and stress-strain behavior were computed depending on microstructure details such as the type of periodic reinforcement array, and the type of interface bonding. A two-dimensional finite element analysis was conducted based on the unit-cell of square, hexagonal, or diagonal periodic away For composite with strong interface bonding, the transverse stress vs. strain curve was generally increased with the increase of the ceramic volume fraction. For the composite with weakly bonded interface, however, the transverse stress vs. strain curve was reduced against the ceramic volume fraction. The decrease was caused by the interface debonding-induced stiffness reduction of the composite. For the composite of weakly bonded interface, the relative reduction rate in the final limit stress for hexagonal array was larger than that for square array. Outcome of the present study was compared favorably with the published literature data.

Vortex-Induced Vibration (VIV) is a major contributor to the fatigue damage of marine risers which are often arranged in an array configuration. In addition to helical strakes and fairings, studies have been strived in searching for possible VIV suppression techniques. Inspired by giant Saguaro Cacti, flexible cylinders of different cactus-shaped cross sections were tested in a water tunnel facility, and test results showed that cactus-like body shapes reduced VIV responses of a cylinder at no cost of significant increase of drag. A series of experiments were conducted on a pair of two tandem-arranged flexible cylinders and an array of four cylinders in a square configuration to investigate the effects of wake on the dynamic responses of cylinders and the VIV mitigation effectiveness of the cactus-like body shape. Results showed that the cylinders in a square configuration, either at the upstream or downstream positions, might have larger dynamic responses than those of a single cylinder. The cactus-like body shape could mitigate VIV responses of cylinders at upstream positions in an array configuration; however, similar to helical strakes, the mitigation efficiency was reduced on downstream cylinders. Note that the cactus-like cross-sectional shape investigated was not optimized for VIV suppression. The present study indicates that the modification of the cross-sectional shape of a cylinder to a well-designed cactus-like shape may be used as an alternative technique to mitigate the VIV of marine risers.

A structural model of the SNF(spent nuclear fuel) disposal canister for the PWR(pressurized water reactor) for about 10,000 years long term deposition at a 500m deep granitic bedrock repository has been developed through various structural safety evaluations. The SNF disposal baskets of this canister model have the array type whose four square cross section baskets stand parallel to each other and symmetrically with respect to the center of the canister section. However, whether this developed structural model of the SNF disposal canister is optimal is not determinable yet. Especially, there is still a problem in weight-reduction of the canister. The cross section shape of the SNF basket should be changed to solve this problem. There are two ways in changing the cross section shape of the SNF basket; the one is to rotate the cross section itself and the other is to change the cross section shape as other shape different from the square cross section. The previous study shows that the canister with $30{\sim}35^{\circ}$ rotated basket array is structurally more stable than the canister with un-rotated parallel basket array. However, whether this canister with rotated basket array is optimal is not either determinable as yet, because it is not revealed that the canister with other cross section different from the square cross section is structurally more stable than other canisters. Therefore, the structural analysis of the SNF disposal canister with other cross section shape which is also symmetric with respect to the canister center planes is very necessary. The structural analysis of the canister with various cross section shape basket array in which each basket is arrayed symmetrically with respect to the center planes is carried out in this paper. The structural analysis result shows that the SNF disposal canister with circular cross section shape baskets located symmetrically with respect to the center of the canister section is structurally more stable than the previously developed SNF disposal canister with the parallel basket array.
Solar photovoltaic (PV) system shows a non-linear current (I) -voltage (V) characteristics, which depends on the surrounding environment factors, such as irradiance, temperature, and the wind. Solar PV system, with current (I) - voltage (V) and power (P) - Voltage (V) characteristics, specifies a unique operating point at where the possible maximum power point (MPP) is delivered. At the MPP, the PV array operates at maximum power efficiency. In order to continuously harvest maximum power at any point of time from solar PV modules, a good MPPT algorithms need to be employed. Currently, due to its simplicity and easy implementation, Perturb and Observe (P&O) algorithms are the most commonly used MPPT control method in the PV systems but it has a drawback at suddenly varying environment situations, due to constant step size. In this paper, to overcome the difficulties of the fast changing environment and suddenly changing the power of PV array due to constant step size in the P&O algorithm, least mean Square (LMS) methods is proposed together with P&O MPPT algorithm which is superior to traditional P&O MPPT. PV output power is predicted using LMS method to improve the tracking speed and deduce the possibility of misjudgment of increasing and decreasing the PV output. Simulation results shows that the proposed MPPT technique can track the MPP accurately as well as its dynamic response is very fast in response to the change of environmental parameters in comparison with the conventional P&O MPPT algorithm, and improves system performance.

In this paper, we propose an equivalent model of array antennas that use open-ended waveguides for effective EM simulation. We first investigate an individual element that consists of an open-ended waveguide and square ground plane. The waveguide length, aperture size, and ground size of the individual element are adjusted to give a similar radiation pattern to that of the individual element of the original antenna. We then apply the designed equivalent model to two different types of array antennas, such as a microstrip patch array and a waveguide array antenna. Comparison of the simulation results using the equivalent model with the results obtained with the original antenna reveals a difference in gain of less than 0.2 dB and a difference in half power beam width(HPBW) of less than $1^{\circ}$. The designed equivalent model is then mounted on a simple aircraft, and the simulation results are again compared to results from the original antenna. We find a 60 % reduction in simulation resources and time when compared with the original antenna model.
Based on the eigenfunction expansion method, the wave-absorbing performance of a square or circular pile breakwater was investigated. Flow separation resulting from sudden contraction and expansion is generated and is the main cause of significant energy loss. Therefore, evaluation of an exact energy loss coefficient is critical to enhancing the reliability of the mathematical model. To obtain the energy loss coefficient, 2-dimensional turbulent flow is analyzed using the FLUENT commercial code, and the energy loss coefficient can be obtained from the pressure difference between upstream and downstream. It was found that energy loss coefficient of circular pile is 20% that of a square pile. To validate the fitting equation for the energy loss coefficient, comparison between the analytical results and the experimental results (Kakuno and Liu, 1993) was made for square and circular piles with good agreement. The array of square piles also provides better wave-absorbing efficiency than the circular piles, and the optimal porosity value is near P=0.1.

In this paper, a microstrip patch array antenna for a Doppler radar at 10.525GHz is desinged and fabricated. To be used for mobile radar system, the antenna is fabricated on a single layer laminate to resist a fire impact and is covered with the Teflon foam. To obtain the desired characteristics, the array antenna is designed 4$\times$8 array using a corporate 3-dB amplitude taper. Also, using square patch elements, the antenna can be converted to a circular polarized antenna later. The designed and fabricated array antenna has the reflection coefficient$({S_11})$ -53.498dB, the horizontal beam width of $10^{\circ}$, the vertical beam width of $18.8^{\circ}$, the gain of 21dBi, the bandwidth of 220MHz for VSWR<1.5 and a side lobe level of less than -17.5dB.
This paper presents the novel design of circular polarized Ka-band horn array antenna. The element antenna of the arrya is composed of two parts, microstrip patch and square horn, and the microstrip patch is fed by corner truncated microstrip patch for circular polarization. The patch antenna has the role of a feeder and polarizer of the horn, thus the whole size of the horn antennae can be considerably reduced. The $1{\times}8$ horn array was designed and fabricated by the spacing of $0.9{\lambda}_0$ among the element horn. The element horn has typical gain of 8dBi and axial-ratio bandwidth of 4.9% at 3dB, and the minimum gain and axial-ratio bandwithd of the array is 14dBi and 8.2%.

The radiation characteristics of a microstrip circularly-polarized aperture-patch $8\times8$ array antenna are investigated at X-band. The radiator consists of a truncated square aperture on the ground plane with an inclined rectangular patch inside, and it is coupled by a microstrip line on the opposite side of the ground. The element spacing of the array was chosen as $0.8\lambda_0$so as to minimize the mutual coupling and maximize the gain. A corporate feed network was employed to distribute the power to each element through four Wilkinson and two T-junction dividers. Measurement results for the $8\times8$ array at 10 GHz showed a directivity of 26.3 dBi, a gain of 22.2 dBi, an axial ratio of 2.97 dB, and a side lobe level of -12.7dB. It was observed that when the array size increases, the directivity increases while the efficiency decreases.

An adaptive nulling technique is presented to synthetically overcome the integrated problems associated with the conventional LMS array in the performances of jammer rejection, convergence rate, misadjustment, and reference signal generation. The proposed method is to remove the target signal from the array input and to eliminate the reference signal prior to minimization processing. The algorithm is constrained to the residue noise level in adaptive processor. Analysis shows effectiveness of the algorithm for coherent and/or incoherent interference rejection, wide dynamic range of convergence factor, rapid adaptation rate, and small mean square error. Simulation results confirm the theoretical prediction.
