Spray Characteristics of In-Rack Sprinkler Heads (인랙스프링클러 헤드의 살수 특성)

  • The aim of this study is to find out the water spray features of in-rack sprinklers for rack storage. This study conducted cold water flow test, measurement of spray angle and densities by angles for sprinkler head manufactured by a Korean company and a U.S. company. Korean sprinkler head had a wide angle of water spary. The water spray angle of a U.S. sprinkler head was narrow compared to the Korean sprinkler. In comparison of the Korean head with U.S. head of the same K80, the Korean head can send water to parts that are difficult to directly spray, but the spraying density by angle was low. U.S. head can send more water than Korean head at a narrow angle. In conclusion, for flammable materials placed in two or more rows in a rack storage, a zigzag arrangement with face sprinklers will be effective.

  • The sprinkler system is regarded as the most effective fire extinguishing system. In this study, we proposed a sprinkler layout optimization framework based on fire simulation and mathematical programming. As a case study, the target space in the form of ordinary residence was set up with the size of $5.2m(L){\times}5.4m(W){\times}2.4m(H)$, and we constructed the fire scenario that polyurethane couch was ignited through carelessness. And we simulated and analyzed fire speed, temperature change and heat release rate according to the type and number of sprinklers installed. Through the formulation of installation and damage costs depending on sprinklers, the sprinkler layout showing optimal performance was resulted from mathematical programming.

  • The objectives of this paper investigate the effect of installed spacing on the activation of spot type heat detection devices. The flow of hot gases under a ceiling resulting from the impingement of a fire plume activates heat detectors and sprinklers. Local temperature and velocity in this ceiling jet are usually expressed with the function of a ceiling height, the distance from a fire location and the heat release rate of fire. And detectors having different. RTI respond in different ways to the same temperature and velocity of ceiling jet. Thus great care should be taken to decide installed spacing of heat detection devices by considering above effects.

Thermal Response of Sprinklers (스프링클러의 열응답성)

  • 반응시간지수(Response Rime Index : RTI)를 사용하여 스프링클러의 열응답(thermal response) 특성을 분류할 수 있다. 반응시간지수는 plunge test에서 균일한 고온의 공기속도의 제곱근과 스프링클러 열감지부의 시정수(time constant)의 곱으로 나타낼 수 있다. 고온의 주위 공기온도에서 스프링클러가 작동하는 시간을 측정하므로서 열감지부의 시정수를 계산할 수 있다. 스프링클러의 RTI가 시정수에 비하여 실험조건에 따른 변화 폭이 적으므로 실제 화재시의 스프링클러 자동시간을 예측하는데에는 RTI가 사용된다. 스프링클러의 작동시간 예측을 위해서는 RTI값과 스프링클러 열감지부 주위의 유속이 필요하며, 유속은 화재의 발열량과 스프링클러가 설치된 구획의 높이로부터 실험식으로 결정된다. 따라서 Plunge test를 이용하여 얻은 스프링클러 열감지부의 기본자료로부터 실화재시의 스프링클러 작동시간을 예측하게 되며, ZONE 모델과 같은 화재 simulation 프로그램과 같이 사용된다면 스프링클러 작동시의 연층의 높이도 예측 가능하게 된다.

  • 일반 건물과 달리 특별한 화재특성을 가지는 단독주택, 주차장, 지하대공간, 다중이용시설 등의 화재 시 유효하게 진압할 수 있는 용도별 맞춤식 스프링클러헤드를 개발하기 위한 성능검증방법을 마련하고자 시험방법 및 성능요건을 연구하였다. 먼저 용도별 장소의 화재특성을 고찰하였으며, 아울러 기존의 관련 국내외 시험기준을 면밀히 분석하여 시험항목 선정 및 적용방법 수립방안을 검토하였다. 시험항목은 환경시험과 기능시험, 화재시험으로 대별할 수 있는데 이 중 용도별 헤드의 성능을 좌우하는 살수분포와 화재시험에 대해 시험방법과 성능요건을 제시하였다.

A Study on Response Time Index for Sprinkler Head (스프링클러 헤드의 응답시간지수 측정)

  • This study describes the engineering approach adopted to investigate sprinkler head during the early stage of a fire when they are subjected to convective heating and low gas velocities. Comparions are made between the parameters derived using basic methods, ie. ramp test, for evaluating sprinkler parameters(time constant, response time index) is illustrated. Evidence is presented that the propotion of heat loss by conduction from a sprinkler element may very typically employed in the rate of rise test. This fact alone may justfy the precautionary need to perform a limited number of rate of rise tests to confirm a sprinklers capacity to function correctly in reasonably unfavourable yet realistic conditions. The work is aimed primarily at meeting the needs of sprinkler industry.

  • This study contemplated the descending air current from the smoke layers related to the smoke logging phenomenon in the sprinkler applied design for effective evacuation safety design. As a result, database on the average particle diameter, particle velocity and distribution of sprinkling was obtained and the relationship between the water amount and particle diameter was obtained. Also, in relation to descending air current, the movement of smoke layer to the bottom at the descending air current velocity of 0.6m/s was observed and stable descending air current was observed in existence of fire source over 100kW in size.

  • Fire experiments were conducted in a real scale room which is assumed to be a residential living room under the various opening conditions and locations of wood crib fire source to study on fire hazard before and after sprinkler activation. Concentrations of oxygen and carbon monoxide, smoke density, and temperature were measured to look into environmental conditions in a room of fire origin. The response time of residential sprinklers was also examined in relation to distance between sprinkler heads and a fire source.

Effects of Tropical Climate on Reproduction of Cross- and Purebred Friesian Cattle in Northern Thailand

  • In the first part of the study, rates of estrus occurrence and success of A.I. service in the Thai-native and Friesian crossbred, and purebred Friesian cows fed in the National Dairy Training and Applied Research Institute in Chiang Mai, Thailand were traced monthly throughout a year. An electric fan and a water sprinkler cooled the stall for the purebred cows during the hot season (March-September). Both rates in pure Friesians were at their highest in the cold-dry season (October- February), but they decreased steadily during the hot-dry season (March-May) and were at their lowest in the hot-wet season (June-September). Seasonal change of a similar pattern was observed in the incidence of estrus, but not in the success rate of insemination in the crossbred cows. By the use of reproductive data, compiled in the same institute, on the 75 % cross- and purebred Friesian cows, and climatological data in Chiang Mai district, effects of ambient temperature and humidity on the reproductive traits of cows were examined by regression analysis in the second half of the study. Significant relationships in the crossbred, expressed by positive-linear and parabola regressions, were found between reproductive parameters such as days to the first estrus (DTFE), A.I. service (DTFAI), and conception, the number of A.I. services required for conception and some climatic factors. However, regarding this, no consistent or intelligible results were obtained in purebred cows, perhaps because electric fans and water sprinklers were used for this breed in the hot season. Among climatic factors examined, the minimum temperature (MINT) in early lactation affected reproductive activity most conspicuously. As the temperature during one or two months prior to the first estrus and A.I. service rose, DTFE and DTFAI steadily became longer, although, when MINT depleted below $17-18^{\circ}C$, the reproductive interval tended to be prolonged again on some occasions. The maximum temperature also affected DTFE and DTFAI, but only in limited conditions. The effect of humidity was not clear, although the inverse relationship between DTFE and minimum humidity during 2 months before the first estrus in the crossbred seemed to be significant. Failure to detect any definite effect of climate on the reproductive traits of pure Friesians seemed to indicate that forced ventilation by electric fans and water sprinklers were effective enough to protect the reproductive ability of this breed from the adverse effects of a hot climate.

A Study on the Recording Technology of Fire Propagation Prevention Wall Using Horticultural Plants (원예식물을 식재한 화재확산 방지용 벽면녹화 기술연구)

  • Purpose : This study is to develop walls using wall recording technology applied on roofs to prevent fire spread in traditional markets. Method : The spray head installed on the developed wall was designed so that the fire does not spread to adjacent buildings after being used for plants. In addition, a spray head was attached to the upper section and some sections for the growth of plants planted on the wall to prevent the spread of fire. Results : These technologies suggested the development of walls that can be installed at the upper level of buildings, such as traditional markets, and separate isolation facilities were not necessary because they are integrated with structures and sprinklers. In addition, sprinklers can perform both the plant spray and fire spread prevention functions. It is believed that this is the only alternative technology proposed in Korea to prevent the spread of fire. Conclusion : In this study, the wall design, designed directly to derive the quantitative performance of the fire spread reduction effect, demonstrated the fire suppression method of the wall system, the durability of the wall itself, and the flame retardability performance.
