  • Objective: This research analyzed behavioral characteristics of Hanwoo (Bos taurus coreanae) steers during each season and growth stage to enable measurement of the animals' welfare level for precision livestock farming. Methods: A hundred-eight beef steers were divided into three equal groups at a Hanwoo farm according to their growth stage: growing stage (GS), 8 months; early-fattening stage (EFS), 19 months; and late-fattening stage (LFS), 30 months. Twelve behavioral categories were continuously recorded for 13 day-time hours in each four seasons with three replications. Results: Time spent standing was found to be significantly longer in summer at all growth stages (p<0.05). Hanwoos at the GS spent significantly longer standing time in spring and summer than those at the EFS and LFS (p<0.05). Lying time in summer was the shortest for all growth stages (p<0.05). Steers at the LFS spent significantly longer lying time than that at the GS (p<0.05) in summer. For GS and EFS, time spent eating in spring and autumn were longer than in summer and winter (p<0.05). Eating time was the longest for the GS in spring, autumn, and winter, excluding for the LFS in winter (p<0.05). Regarding ruminating, steers at the LFS spent significantly shorter time than those at other stages in all seasons (p<0.05). GS and EFS steers showed the longest walking time in summer compared with other seasons (p<0.05). At GS and LFS, drinking time in summer was the longest of all seasons (p<0.05). Sleeping time was significantly shorter in summer compared with the other seasons (p<0.05). Self-grooming time was the longest in winter for all growth stages (p<0.05). Conclusion: Steers were found to have more variable behavioral patterns during summer and the GS and less active behaviors during the LFS, thus extra care seems necessary during the GS, LFS, and summer period.

  • In order to see the stratification related to the heat flux In Deukryang Bay, the oceanographic data on July 12, 1994 and the meteorological data of Kohung and Kwangju meteorological stations were analysed. The temperature durerences between the sea surface and the near bottom were 1~3 ton spring tide (July 12, 1994) In Deukryang Bay. The temperature anomalies were high about 3t during summer In 1994. These mean that the non mixing was not effective In destroying the stratification due to the sea surface heating by the solar radition, even though it was on spring tide. The maximum solar radiation was about 600 ly/day, which was the value of the same date of oceanographic observation. The sensible and the latent heat flux which are 0~100 ly/day were not so varied during summer. The absorbed heat flux through the sea surface was mostly lost by the back radiation. which ranges are about 0~-400 ly/day. The dimensionless mixing parameter related to the buoyancy flux was 5~150$\times$$10^{-5}$. The efficiency of tidal mixing to destroy the stratecation was 0.4~0.6%.

  • To understand the marine algal flora on Goheung coast, Korea, marine algae at 8 points were collected from November 2008 to February 2009 and from April to June 2009. Thirty-seven species (2 species of angiosperms, 5 chlorophytes, 12 phaeophytes, and 18 rhodophytes) occurred from fall to winter and 52 species (2 species of angiosperms, 9 chlorophytes, 18 phaeophytes, and 23 rhodophytes) occurred from spring to summer. Commonly occurring species were Ulva pertusa, Sargassum thunbergii, Hizikia fuziformis, and Gelidium amansii, and dominant species at most points were Ulva pertusa, Sargassum thunbergii, and Gelidium amansii. The average of the ratio of total rhodophytes and chlorophytes to phaeophytes ((R+C)/P) was 1.61 in fall to winter and 1.69 in spring to summer, and the average Laminariales/Fucales/Dictyotales (LFD) ratio was 1.14 in fall to winter and 1.18 in spring to summer. These results show that the marine algal flora of Goheung could be considered as temperate. The LFD ratio was fit for showing a feature of algal flora of Goheung. Species diversity index was high at Points 4~6 while low at Points 1 and 8. Detrended correspondence analysis (DCA) showed that the similarity of occurring species at Points 3 and 4 was higher than the other points from fall to winter, whereas the occurred species at Points 1~4 were similar from spring to summer. The average values of ecological evaluation index (EEI) of the investigation points were 6.8 from fall to winter and 6.3 from spring to summer, which means that the ecological environment of the investigation points were middle class and the EEI values of outer sea points were higher than the inner bay points.

The results are as follows. 1. In spring mowing height, 3.5-4 mm appeared the highest frequency(44.4%) and 4-4.5mm mowing height appeared the high frequency(41.0%). In summer mowing height, 4.5-5mm appeared the highest frequency(51.3%). In fall mowing height, 4-4.5mm appeared the highest frequency(41.0%). 2. In N-fertilizing amount of February and November, 0(zero) g/$m^2$ appeared the highest frequency. In N-fertilizing amount, of June and July 0-2 g/$m^2$ appeared the highest frequency. In N-fertilizing amount, of March, May, August, and September 2-4 g/$m^2$ appeared the highest frequency. In N-fertilizing amount, of October 2-4 or 6-8 g/$m^2$ appeared the highest frequency. 3. In spring topdressing times, 3-6 times appeared the highest frequency(52.6%). In spring topdressing amount, more than 2mm appeared the highest frequency(35.9%). In summer topdressing tierms, 0-3times appeared the highest frequency(71.8%). In summer topdressing amount, 0.5-1mm appeared the highest frequency(46.2%). In fall topdressing times, 0-3times appeared the highest frequency(47.4%). In fall topdressing amount, more than 2mm appeared the highest frequency(35.9%). 4. In spring irrigation tiems, 3-4times/a week appeared the highest frequency (30.6%). In spring irrigation amount, the irrigation below 5mm/day under appeared the highest frequency(38.7%). In summer irrigation times, 4-7times/ a week appeared the highest frequency(38.9%). In summer irrigation amount, 5-10mm/a day appeared the highest frequency(45.2%). In fall irrigation times, 2-3times/a week appeared the highest frequency(36.1%). In fall irrigation amount, the irrigation below 5mm/a day under appeared the highest frequency(45.2%). 5. In spring aeration times, 2 times appeared the highest frequency(55.2%). In spring aeration depth, 5-10mm appeared the highest frequency(81.6%). In fall aeration times, 1 time appeared the highest frequency(82.5%). In fall aeration depth, 5-10mm appeared the highest frequency(86.8%). 6. In spring green speed, 1.98-2.28 or 2.59-2.89mm appeared the highest frequency(32.7%). In summer green speed, 1.98-2.28mm appeared the highest frequency (46.9%). In fall green speed, 1.98-2.28mm appeared the highest frequency(38.8%). 7. The factors which affect green speed were mowing height, N-fertilizing, season, topdressing, irrigation, and aeration. Vertical mowing did not affect green speed. The order of the relevant important factors was mowing height >: N-fertilizing > season > topdressing > irrigation > aeration. Mowing height and N-fertilizing were the most important factors in green speed. As mowing height decreased, green sped always increased. As total N-fertilizing amount decreased, green speed increased. In summer, green sped decreased remarkably. As topdressing times increased and the topdressing amount decreased, green sped increased. As irrigation times increased and irrigation amount decreased, green speed increased.

  • The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of cows parity and calving seasons on the subsequent reproductive performance of the herd of Korean native cows raised under the same condition. With the parity of the cows ranged 1 to 4 (mean: 1.9), significant associations were found between parity and calving interval (p<0.05). Calving interval of the primiparous cows group was 395.0 ${\pm}$ 16.5 days, which was the longest calving interval among the four groups. On the other hand, calving interval of the second parity group was 333.7 ${\pm}$ 3.6 days. The primiparous cows had tendencies that long interval from calving to conception and small number of service per conception relatively when compared with the multiparous cows. In the case of calving season, the interval from calving to first service was short in summer and winter relatively. The interval from calving to conception in summer was the shortest in four seasons. The number of service per conception was larger in spring and winter and smaller in summer and autumn. Calving in spring showed delayed reproductive performance and calving in summer showed desirable reproductive performance.

  • This study analyzed food poisoning articles in the Joseonwangjosillok to acquire historical evidence. The study method used case studies from the textual content of the Joseonwangjosillok. In all, there were fifteen cases of food poisoning in spring (60%), four cases in summer (16%), five cases in fall (20%), and 1 case during winter (4%). Most cases of food poisoning occurred during spring, followed by fall, then summer, and the least during winter. Foods that caused poisoning were as follows: twelve cases of seafood (48%), three cases of vegetables (12%), two cases of meat (8%), and eight cases of poisonous food (32%). Maximum cases pertained to seafood poisoning, which also spiked during spring. This could be attributed to the increased number of planktons as the sea temperature rose during spring. Due to the increased plankton, shellfish absorbed more toxins. The consumption of increasingly toxic shellfish resulted in more cases of food poisoning. The food poisoning frequency was the most severe during the 18th century, followed sequentially by the 15th, 16th, and 17th centuries, and was the least severe during the 19th century. Joseonwangjosillok showed that food poisoning cases happened most during social events where many guests or family members gathered to eat.

  • Hanna - Gifford Model and Air Quality Display Model(AQDM) were validated in the simulation of $SO_2$ and TSP concentrations of Seoul City. The observed data which were measured at 16 sites of air monitoring system conducted by Seoul metropolitan city in 1984 were compared with the simulated data and the results were obtained as follows; 1. Several different meteorological data were examined: The particularities of meteorological data was not an influencing factor in the validity of simulation. The simulations of $SO_2$ by Hanna - Gifford model and by AQDM showed close correlation coefficients between the observed data and the simulated data (r = 0.71 - 0.78). 2. The simulation models showed different validities with the seasonal variation: The correlation coefficients (r) between the observed and the simulated by Hanna - Gifford Model for $SO_2$ and TSP were 0.86 and 0.80 in Spring, 0.63 and 0.66 in Summer, 0.76 in Autumn and 0.81 and 0.93 in Winter respectively. Those by AQDM were 0.73 and 0.68 in Spring, 0.56 and 0.79 in Summer, 0.77 and 0.76 in Autumn and 0.64 and 0.68 in Winter respectively. 3. The simulated data by two models had a close relationships: The correlation coefficients between them were 0.96 for $SO_2$, and 0.93 for TSP. With the above results, the application of models was discussed; Hanna - Gifford model was less valid in the simulation for the air quality of $SO_2$ and TSP in Seoul in Summer and AQDM also was not valid for $SO_2$ in Summer and in Winter and for TSP in Spring.
