  • A total stroke of an opening or closing motion of a hinge mechanism for a folder-type mobile phone is composed of two portions. In the first portion, human fingers act a torque to open or close the folder. In this portion, the rotating folder compresses the coil spring installed in the hinge mechanism. In the last portion, this compressed coil spring generates a torque to rotate the folder. In this study, we have developed an algorithm to design a hinge mechanism to be operated by an arbitrary continuous torque in the first portion of the total stroke. Consequently, we can design hinge mechanisms that satisfy various demands of consumers. A pair of contours installed in the mechanism plays an important role. It transforms the folder's rotational motion into translation to compress the coil spring in the first portion; on the other hand, it transforms translational motion into the folder's rotation in the last portion. Using this algorithm we have designed the pair of the contour curves operated by an arbitrary continuous torque.

  • In this paper, we study the propulsive behavior related to the flagellar motion of bacteria using a spring model. A commercial program was used to conduct simulations, and we verified the numerical technique by setting an additional rotating domain and conducting a parametric study. The numerical results are in good agreement with slender-body theory, although overall, they are not in agreement with resistive-force theory. We confirm the effect of the rotational velocity, pitch, helical radius, fluid viscosity, and, in particular, the distance from the wall on the propulsion of the spring.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze how the human body having more muscles than its degree-of-freedom modulates an effective stiffness using redundant actuation, and to apply this concept to the design and control of advanced machines which requires adaptable spring. To investigate the adaptable stiffness phenomenon due to redundant actuation in the human body, this paper derives a general stiffness model of the Human body. In particular, for a planar 1 DOF human arm model, a planar 2 DOF human arm model, a spherical 3 DOF shoulder model, a 4 DOF human arm model, and a 7 DOF human arm model, the required nonlinear geometry ad the number of required actuator for successful modulation of the effective stiffness are analyzed along with a load distribution method for modulation of the required stiffness of such systems. Secondly, the concept of motion frequency modulation is introduced to show the usefulness of adaptive stiffness modulation. The motion frequency modulation represents a control of stiffness and / or inertia properties of systems. To show the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm, simulations are performed for 2 DOF anthropomorphic robot.

  • Theoretical and experimental study is conducted on the contact pressure distribution of a radial tire in motion under various camber angles. Tire construction is modelled by a spring bedded elastic ring, consisted of sidewall springs and a composite belt ring. The contact area is assumed to be a trapezoidal shape varying with camber angles and weighted load. The basic equation in a quasi-static form is derived for the deformation of a running belt with a constant velocity by the aid of Lagrange-Euler transformation. Galerkin's method and stepwise calculation are applied for solving the basic equation and the mechanical boundary condition along both sides of the contact belt part subjected to shearing forces transmitted from the sidewall spring. Experimental results on the contact pressure, measured by pressure sensors embedded in the surface of the drum tester, correspond well with the calculated ones for the test tire under various camber angles, running velocities and weighted loads. These results indicate that a buckling phenomenon of the contact belt in the widthwise direction occurs due to the effect of camber angle.

  • The tapered leaf spring is regarded as the adequate tool to improve ride quality and to reduce vehicle weight of commercial vehicles. These effects are due to minimizing the contact area of each leaf by reducing the number of leaves and by optimizing the thickness profile of each leaf. But in adapting the tapered leaf spring to improve ride quality, we often have some problems of bad pitching and bouncing motion. This paper shows the basic properties of tapered leaf spring by rig tests and how to improve ride quality of a vehicle with tapered leaf springs, compared with multi-leaf spring. From the results of vehicle tests and rig tests it is concluded that the ride quality was effected by the dynamic spring rate and the friction of the tapered leaf spring.

  • In this study, three axillary crutches(Mobilegs, KM crutch, Pro In-motion) were tested with 12 healthy male subjects by measuring the EMG activity of the latissimus dorsi and gastrocnemius and the user-perceived levels focusing on the comfort and ease of use. The result showed that the EMG activity of the gastrocnemius was significantly reduced during ambulation using Mobilegs and Pro In-motion compared with the ambulation using KM crutch, a conventional crutch. However, no statistically significant difference was found for EMG activity of the latissimus dorsi. Subjects perceived the Mobilegs to be more comfortable and easy to use than the other crutches. Theses result may delivered mostly from the characteristics of spring-loaded axillary pad and ergonomic crutch handle. The results indicate that ambulation using the spring-loaded crutch is much easy with asking less exertion at gastrocnemius. In addition, the characteristics of crutch design, such as embedded spring, makes muscles to consume less energy. When the reasonable structure and form of the axillary pad and crutch handle are applied herein, the ambulation using the crutches are perceived to comfort.

  • Ride quality of medium truck became a very important factor in the suspension design, to the demand of more comfortable ride of passengers. This study describes how to determine and evaluate design parameters related to the chassis suspension system with time and frequency analysis. The spring stiffness and damping force of the chassis suspension system were obtained by observing the vertical acceleration PSD. The simulation was carried out on various road profiles, which was suggested by ISO. The pitching motion of the medium size truck was observed to improve the ride quality. A computer simulated truck model was constructed using DADS, a commercial dynamic analysis software, in order to simulate the truck motions. From the analyzed process of suspension parameters, it was concluded that the spring and the shock absorbers affect the pitching of the vehicle. In order to validate the computer simulated truck model, a physical prototype was constructed and tested.

  • This paper presents a force model of the clean tube system, which was developed as a means of transferring air-floated wafers inside a closed tube filled with super clean air. The recovering force from the holes for floating wafers is modeled as a linear spring and thus the wafers motion is modeled as a mass-spring-damper system. The propelling forces are modeled as linear along with the wafer location. The paper also proposes a control method to emit and stop a wafer at the center of a control unit. It reveals the minimum value of the propelling force to leave from the control unit. In order to stop the wafer, it utilizes the exact time when the wafer arrives at the position to activate the propelling force. Experiments with the clean tube system built for the 12 inch wafer shows the validity of the proposed model and the algorithm.

  • In this study, we investigated the effect of the spring constant on frictional behavior at a nanoscale through molecular dynamics simulation. A small cube-shaped tip was modeled and placed on a flat substrate. We did not apply the normal force to the tip but applied adhesive force between the tip and the substrate. The tip was horizontally pulled by a virtual spring to generate relative motion against the substrate. The controlled spring constant of the virtual spring ranged from 0.3 to 70 N/m to reveal its effect on frictional behavior. During the sliding simulation, we monitored the frictional force and the position of the tip. As the spring constant decreased from 70 to 0.3 N/m, the frictional force increased from 0.1 to 0.25 nN. A logarithmic relationship between the frictional force and spring constant was established. The stick-slip instability and potential energy slope increased with a decreasing spring constant. Based on the results, an increase in the spring constant reduces the probability of trapping in the local minima on the potential energy surface. Thus, the energy loss of escaping the potential well is minimized as the spring constant increases.

  • This paper proposed an optimal plate spring design for the optical image stabilizer in mobile phones. The voice-coil motor (VCM) with plate spring is the smallest, lowest-cost solution for auto focus on the market today and it is also the simplest to implement. The VCM is selected in this paper for auto focusing. However, the design process is complex due to the many design variables coupled to each other and some constraints of each directional motion caused by the characteristics of plate spring. Because of the complex formulation of the design objective, a plate spring design is proposed through the design of experiments to find the optimal design satisfying design constraints.
