  • In the present study, to determine the flow rate of droplets supplied to heat transfer surface after (j-1)th rebound, $D_X[j{\ge}2]^{\ast}$, it was assumed that the rebound droplets are distributed according to the Gaussian distribution from 0 to L, in which the flight distance L is determined by maximum flight distance $L_{max}$. We also assumed that $L_{max}$ is dependent on the air flow velocity and mean size of droplets. The local heat flux of a dilute spray in high temperature region was predicted using the newly evaluated $D_X[j{\ge}2]^{\ast}$. In addition, the predicted results by the present model were compared with the existing experimental data.

  • The purpose of this study is to elucidate heat characteristics according to inclination angle of the hot flat plate at the spray cooling. As results of this experiment, the heat flux, the heat transfer coefficient and the cooling speed are increased as the liquid volume flux and subcooled temperature go up. And as the inclination angle of the heat transfer surface is increased, the cooling speed on the inclined flat plate becomes faster. It means that the cooling ability is increased because droplets were excluded by gravity.

  • While the pinch instability theory (PIT) has been widely employed to analyze the spray transfer mode in the gas metal arc welding (GMAW), it cannot predict the detaching drop size accurately. The PIT is modified in this work to increase the accuracy of prediction and to simulate the molten tip geometry to be more physically acceptable. Since the molten tip becomes a cone shape in the spray mode, the effective wire diameter is formulated that the effective diameter is inversely proportional to current square. Modifications are also made to consider the finite length of the liquid column and current leakage through the arc. While the effective diameter influences drop transfer significantly, the current leakage has negligible effects. The effects of modifications on drop transfer are analyzed, and the predicted drop diameters show good agreements with the experimental data of the steel wire.

  • An closed cooling tower is a device similar to a general cooling tower, but with cooling tower replaced by a heat exchanger. The purpose of this study is to evaluate thermal performance of heat exchanger at various conditions and to provide design datebase. The experimental study regarding heat exchanger for closed cooling tower was conducted. Experimental apparatus consists of constant temperature bath, water pump, spray nozzle, heat exchanger, fan, and date acquisition system. Heat transfer rates at various air velocitys, water flow rates, two different spray modes were measured and heat transfer coefficient were calculated to compare the thermal performances. This study provides that the heat transfer coefficient increases with increasing spray water flow rate and with increasing air velocity. The wet mode was more effective than dry mode for closed cooling tower to this study.

  • Nanofluids is that metallic or nonmetallic nanometer-sized particles are dispersed in liquid and they can be used in various fields to increase the heat transfer rate. This study conducted experiments to evaluate whether the cooling efficiency of nanofluids is better than that of water in spray cooling. A heated surface was designed and fabricated to make the temperature distribution be linear, which was confirmed by three thermocouple measurements under the heated surface. Spray cooling experiments were conducted using water, 0.2% wt. (weight), and 0.5% wt. $Al_2O_3$ nanofluids at the pressure of 0.2 MPa and 0.3 MPa. Based on the results, it is shown that the cooling efficiency of nanofluids is higher than that of water especially in the region of single phase heat transfer. As a result, we can expect that nanofluids can be used as efficient coolants in the cooling of electronic packages where the temperature of the heated surface is not high enough for boiling incipience.

  • The cooling heat transfer by impinging water spray jets on a rotating roll with a relatively large diameter has been investigated under various experimental conditions with 3 different sizes of flat type nozzle. The local heat transfer coefficients were calculated by finite difference method using measured surface temperatures of the circular cylinder as boundary conditions. Results show that a peak value of the heat transfer coefficient is located at the center of sprayed area and there may be a secondary peak at the downstream. The average heat transfer coefficients on the sprayed area were found to be 10 to 22 ㎾/$m^2$$^{\circ}C$, and were not related to spraying pressure, but approximately linearly to flow rate of sprayed water. Also it is found that increasing the distance from roll to nozzle could improve the cooling efficiency by increasing the sprayed area.

  • The effect of S content in welding wires on spattering characteristics and droplet transfer phenomena was studied. In MAG welding using 80%Ar-$20%CO_2$ shielding gas, spattering characteristics and droplet transfer phenomena were varied with S content of wire. Sulfur addition in wire reduced surface tension of droplet and weld pool, and made arc more stable in MAG welding. With increasing S content, the spattering ratio and the ratio of large size spatter ($d{\geq}1.0mm$) were reduced in short circuit transfer mode. In spray transfer mode, spattering ratio, however was increased when sulfur was added more than 0.020wt.% because surface tension of droplets and weld pool was reduced too much even though arc stability was improved.

  • Water spray cooling has been widely used in a variety of industrial applications. The present study concentrated on quantitative measurements of the heat flux and heat transfer coefficient by water spray as it impinges on the rough surface of a hot steel plate at $900^{\circ}C$. A novel experimental technique was developed for a hightemperature heat flux gauge with a test block, cartridge heaters, and thermocouples that was used to measure the surface heat flux information on the hot steel plate for local heat flux measurements. The roles of the surface roughness on heat transfer are presented in this paper for well-characterized four rough surfaces with average rms roughness heights of $40-80{\mu}M$. The results show that the local heat transfer for rough surfaces is higher than that for a smooth surface. Heat transfer can be significantly increased by the presence of surface roughness elements, which can disrupt the thin thermal boundary layer. In addition, the heat transfer enhancement mechanism on a rough surface can be investigated by a different boiling regime.

  • The recent trends in numerical simulation of various spray phenomena are reviewed in this article. Major subtopics are atomization/breakup, collision/coalescence, wall collision, interfacial transfer, droplet dispersion, two-phase injection and spray combustion. Each submodel has been under continuous refinement and validation against more extensive data base by advanced laser diagnostic techniques. Most uncertainty in current spray simulations come from these physical submodels, not from excessive computational constraints.
