  • Shielding effectiveness (SE) improvement with EMI shield layers fabricated by conformal spray coating system was studied. Silver or Nickel powder filled acrylic resin were sprayed on the samples. We compared the performance with the viscosity of 400 cPs and 100 cPs cases. The thickness range of the coating layer was 20 to 50 um for the silver, 60 to 120 um for the nickel. The shielding effectiveness was measured by ASTM D4935 using coaxial type TEM-cell. The silver-filled resin showed much better performance than that of the nickel-filled resin. The shielding effectiveness increased almost proportional to the thickness of the coating layers until being saturated around 63 dB for the silver-layer or around 34 dB for the nickel-layer. The best performance measured in this study was the shielding effectiveness of 63 dB with $35{\mu}m-thick$ of silver-layer.

  • 3Y-TZP (3 mol% yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystals) ceramics have excellent mechanical properties including high fracture toughness, good abrasion resistance as well as chemical and biological stability. As a result, they are widely used in mechanical and medical components such as bearings, grinding balls, and hip implants. In addition, they provide excellent light transmittance, biocompatibility, and can match tooth color when used as a dental implant. Recently, given the materials' resemblance to human teeth, these ceramics have emerged as an alternative to titanium implants. Since the introduction of CAD/CAM in the manufacture of ceramic implants, they've been increasingly used for prosthetic restoration where aesthetics and strength are required. In this study, to improve the surface roughness of zirconia implants, we modified the 3Y-TZP surface with a biocomposite of hydroxyapatite and forsterite using room temperature spray coating methods, and investigated the mixed effect of the two powders on the evolution of surface microstructure, i.e., coating thickness and roughness, and biological interaction during the in vitro test in SBF solution. We compared improvement in bioactivity by observing dissolution and re-precipitation on the specimen surface. From the results of in vitro testing in SBF solution, we confirmed improvement in the bioactivity of the 3Y-TZP substrate after surface modification with a biocomposite of hydroxyapatite and forsterite. Surface dissolution of the coating layer and the precipitation of new hydroxyapatite particles was observed on the modified surface, indicating the improvement in bioactivity of the zirconia substrate.

  • A Chloride-induced stress corrosion cracking (CISCC) of austenite stainless steel in dry cask storage system (DCSS) can occur with extending service time than originally designed. Cold spray coating (CSC) not only form a very dense microstructure that can protect from corrosive environments, but also can generate compressive stress on the surface. This characteristic of CSC process is very helpful to increase the resistance for CISCC. CSC with several powders, such as 304L, 316L and Ni can be optimized to form very dense coating layer. In addition, the impact energy generated as the CSC powder collides with the surface of base metal at a speed of Mach 2 or more can remove the residual tensile stress of welding area and serve the compress stress. CSC layers include no oxidation and no contamination with under 0.2% porosity, which is enough to protect from the penetration of corrosive chloride. Therefore, the CSC coating layer can be accompanied by a function that can be disconnected from the corrosive environment and an effect of improving the residual stress that causes CISCC, so the canister's CISCC resistance can be increased.

  • Using Pechini method, we synthesized the $La_{0.6}Ca_{0.41}CrO_3$ (LCC41) and $La_{0.8}Sr_{0.05}Ca_{0.15}CrO_3$ (LSCC) powders for slurry dip coating, and $La_{0.75}Ca_{0.27}CrO_3$ (LCC27) powder for air plasma spray coating. The sintering property of the powders and their coating properties were investigated. The average particle sizes of the LCC41, LSCC, LCC27 were 0.6, 0.9, $1.5{\mu}m$, respectively. The relative density of LCC41 bulk was to be found about 98%. The LSCC coating on anode support prevented Ca migration of the coated LCC41 on the anode some or less, which was confirmed from EDS result. The air plasma spray-coated LCC27 with the dip-coated LCC41 were more dense and showed better electrical conductivity than those of the air plasma spray-coated LCC27 and the dip-coated LSCC and LSCC41. The LCC41 and LCC27 showed good electrical conductivities, but the LSCC had a poor electrical conductivity probably due to low sinterability

  • In this paper, we investigated the relations between dispersion of CNTs (carbon nanotubes) and electrical conductivity in the CNT/PVDF (polyvinylidene fluoride) composite film. By adding hydrophobic CNTs as filler into the PVDF matrix, we fabricated hydrophobic and electrically conducting polymer coating film. Dispersion of CNTs in the CNT/PVDF composite film plays a significant role in terms of electrical conductivity and wetting property. Spray coating method was used to form the CNT/PVDF composite films by injecting the dispersed CNTs in the PVDF solution with different weight ratios from 0.7 wt% to 7 wt%. We investigated the electrical properties and contact angles of the CNT/PVDF composite films with the CNT concentration. Finally we discussed the conducting mechanism and feasibility of the CNT/PVDF composite film for the conducting polymer films.

  • The degree of WC decomposition and hardness of thermally sprayed WC-Co coatings are important factors determining the wear resistance of the coatings. In order to minimize the degree of decomposition and to increase hardness, the effects of processing parameters of high velocity oxyfuel(HVOF) spraying on various characteristics of nanostructured WC-12Co coating have been evaluated by an experimental design method. The HVOF sprayed WC-12Co coatings consisted of various carbide phases including WC, $W_2C$ and $W_3Co_3C$, with a much reduced carbon content. The degree of WC decomposition and decarburization was affected by changing barrel length and spray distance. The hardness of WC-Co coatings was strongly related to droplet temperature at substrate, and increased with increasing fuel addition and/or decreasing spray distance. The effective control of processing parameters was discussed in detail for manufacturing a high performance WC-Co coating.

  • In this study, the experiments were carried out for the purpose of establishment of aluminium cementation to steel surface by diffusible heat treatment after making the coated film onto the substrate by arc spray method. Also, the microstructure and mechanical properties of the cementation layer produced by this study were inspected for various heat treatment and spraying conditions. Main results obtained are as follow ; 1. The coating film characteristics which have excellent errosion-resistance, high temperature oxidation-resistance are obtained by aluminium penetration heat treatment after making the sprayed aluminum coating film onto the steel substrate. 2. Aluminium diffusion penetration takes place at higher temperature than 660.deg.C, and the more heat treatment time and the higher heat treatment temperature adopted, the deeper diffusion layer obtained. 3. Insert gas arc spraying using argon gas as the carrier gas higher improvement of mechanical property than that of compressed air environment. 4. The coating film characteristics appeared to be improvement of adhesive property, porosity plugging effect by heat treatment in air environment.

  • A reaction and evaporation types of cerium based conversion coatings were developed for galvanized steel sheet. The corrosion loss Q(Cb/cm2) and protection efficiency P(%) were obtained using a polarization technique for cerium based conversion coatings on galvanized steel exposed to 0.5N NaCl for 7 days. The microstructure of coating layer was observed using SEM. An excellent corrosion reistnce of galvanized steel was obtained by two types of cerium basd conversion coating. Salt spray test was done to evaluate the corrosion resistance of three samples by visual inspection. The corrosion ranking of three samples-untreated and two treatedby electrochemical data was matched well with the results of salt spray test.

  • The surface modification and treatment using thermal plasma were reviewed in academic fields. In general, thermal plasma is generated by direct current (DC) and radiofrequency (RF) power sources. Thermal spray coating, a typical commercial process using thermal plasma, is performed by DC thermal plasma, whereas other promising surface modifications have been reported and developed using RF thermal plasma. Beyond the thermal spray coating, physical and chemical surface modifications were attempted widely. Superhydrophobic surface treatment has a very high industrial demand particularly. Besides, RF thermal plasma system for large-area film surface treatment is being developed. Thermal plasma is especially suitable for the surface modification of low-dimensional nanomaterial (e.g., nanotubes) by utilizing high temperature and rapid quenching. It is able to synthesize and modify nanomaterials simultaneously in a one-pot process.

  • In this study, we investigated the suppression of the corrosion of cast iron in a copper-cast iron double-layered canister under local corrosion of the copper layer. The cold spray coating technique was used to insert metals with lower galvanic activity than that of copper, such as silver, nickel, and titanium, between the copper and cast iron layers. Electrochemically accelerated corrosion tests were performed on the galvanic specimens in KURT groundwater at a voltage of 1.0 V for a week. The results revealed that copper corrosion was evident in all galvanic specimens of Cu-Ag, Cu-Ni, and Cu-Ti. By contrast, the copper was barely corroded in the Cu-Fe specimens. Therefore, it was concluded that if an inactive galvanic metal is applied to the areas where local corrosion is concerned, such as welding parts, the disposal canister can overcome local or non-uniform corrosion of the copper canister for long periods.
