The attitude stability of a satellite in spin-stabilized injection mode which contains a liquid pool is investigated. The satellite model for investigation is a two-body system consisting of a the main body, which is symmetric and rigid, representing the spacecraft, and a spherical pendulum, representing the liquid pool. Assuming that both spacecraft and pendulum are in states of steady spin about the symmetry axis of the spacecraft, the coupled nonlinear equations of motion for the system are simplified. In this paper, by using the multiple scales method, the possible resonance conditions in terms of the system parameters are determined and the corresponding near-resonant solutions are derived.

A comprehensive investigation of the stochastic response of an isolated cable-stayed bridge subjected to spatially varying earthquake ground motion is performed. In this study, the Jindo Bridge built in South Korea is chosen as a numerical example. The bridge deck is assumed to be continuous from one end to the other end. The vertical movement of the stiffening girder is restrained and freedom of rotational movement on the transverse axis is provided for all piers and abutments. The longitudinal restraint is provided at the mainland pier. The A-frame towers are fixed at the base. To implement the base isolation procedure, the double concave friction pendulum bearings are placed at each of the four support points of the deck. Thus, the deck of the cable-stayed bridge is isolated from the towers using the double concave friction pendulum bearings which are sliding devices that utilize two spherical concave surfaces. The spatially varying earthquake ground motion is characterized by the incoherence and wave-passage effects. Mean of maximum response values obtained from the spatially varying earthquake ground motion case are compared for the isolated and non-isolated bridge models. It is pointed out that the base isolation of the considered cable-stayed bridge model subjected to the spatially varying earthquake ground motion significantly underestimates the deck and the tower responses.
The attitude motion of a spin-stabilized, upper-stage spacecraft is investigated based on a two-body model, consisting of a symmetric body, representing the spacecraft, and a spherical pendulum, representing the liquid slag pool entrapped in the aft section of the rocket motor. Exact time-varying nonlinear equations are derived and used to eliminate the drawbacks of conventional linear models. To study the stability of the spacecraft's attitude motion, both the spacecraft and pendulum are assumed to be in states of steady spin about the symmetry axis of the spacecraft and the coupled time-varying nonlinear equation of the pendulum is simplified. A quasi-stationary solution to that equation and approximate resonance conditions are determined in terms of the system parameters. The analysis shows that the pendulum is subject to a combination of parametric and external-type excitation by the main body and that energy from the excited pendulum is fed into the main body to develop the coning instability. In this paper, numerical examples are presented to explain the mechanism of the coning angle growth and how angular momenta and disturbance moments are generated.

This paper summarizes a study on the application of the friction pendulum system in bridge seismic isolation. Shaking table tests have been carried out on a model structure isolated with F.P.S and the obtained structural responses are compared to those of non-isolated. It can be concluded the F.P.S increases the earthquake resistance capacity of the isolated structure. It is also found that the stiffness of bearing, being controlled by the radius of curvature of the spherical sliding interface, is unaffected by the amplitude of the input excitation. Furthermore, the coefficient of sliding friction is velocity dependent so that in weak excitation the sliding velocity is low and, accordingly, the mobilized friction force is less than the one mobilized in strong excitation. Also, the frictional properties of the bearings remain markedly stable after extensive testing, and the permanent displacements are small and not cumulative in successive earthquakes.
This study is generalization of the study of Miles[Physica 11D, 1984, pp.309-323]on the resonant motion of a spherical pendulum, which is equivalent to a particle on a spherical container subject to a linear, horizontal excitation. This study covers an arbitrary shape of container and a more general excitation (horizontal but elliptic motion). The averaging method is applied to reduce the governing equations to an autonomous system with cubic nonlinear terms, under the assumption of small amplitude of the container motion. It is shown that both the container shape and the excitation pattern affect the particle dynamics. Under the linear excitation, the anharmonic motion of the particle is possible only for a certain finite range of the parameter a controling the container shape. Stability of the particle's harmonic motion is also influenced by the excitation pattern; as the excitation trajectory becomes closer to a circle, the particle's motion has a stronger tendency to become stable and to follow the rotational direction of the excitation. Under a circular excitation, the motion is always stable and circular with the same rotational direction as the excitation. Analogy between the present model and that of the surface wave inside a circular is studied quantitatively.

Space exploration spacecraft carry large amounts of liquid fuel, often more than half. In such cases, the liquid fuel sloshing must be considered in the design of the spacecraft since the sloshing can affects the stability of the spacecraft. In this paper, we present the results of analyzing the sloshing of fuel and the dynamic behavior of the spacecraft. For the purpose, a model in which the maneuvering of the spacecraft causes the sloshing and a model in which the reaction force and moment due to the sloshing are transmitted to the spacecraft are developed. The dynamical behavior of the spacecraft are analyzed using a simulation program coded by Modelica.

This paper deals with attitude determination and parameter estimation problems for a lunar module. For this we first derive equations of motion for the lunar module by considering allocation locations (configurations) of reaction thruster and a reaction wheel assembly. The lunar module is assumed as a rigid body. In order to include the effect of fuel sloshing on the dynamics of the lunar module, we model it as a spherical pendulum for a simple analysis. For estimating angular rates and moment of inertia of the module, we employ an extended Kalman filter and the least mean square algorithms, respectively. Finally we construct a dynamical model for the lunar module by combining all these elements.

The deep seabed mining system is generally composed of surface vessel, lifting system, buffer, flexible pipe and miner. The milling system is regarded as a large-scale system in which each subsystem is interconnected to other one. In order to control a large-scale system, a decentralized control approaches have been proposed recently. In this paper, as a basic study on application of decentralized control, firstly, the mining system is simplified modeled, where the lifting system and buffer is regarded as a spherical pendulum and tile flexible pipe is as a two-dimension linear spring. Based on the derived model, the system characteristics and the feasibility of decentralized control are analyzed.

The deep-sea mining system is generally composed of surface vessel, lifting system, buffer, flexible pipe and miner. The mining system can be regarded as a large-scale system in which each subsystem is interconnected to other ones. In order to control a large-scale system, decentralized control approaches have been proposed recently. In this paper, as a basic study on application of decentralized control, firstly, the mining system was modeled in a simplified way. Lifting system and buffer were regarded as a spherical pendulum and the flexible pipe was taken as a two-dimensional linear spring connection. Based on the simplified model dynamics, the mining system can be decentralized two subsystems, the one consisting of surface vessel, lifting system and buffer, and the other, the miner. Next, this paper proposed the design of controller for each decentralized subsystem by regarding the interacting terms as disturbances. The controllers kept the constant distance between two subsystems during the miner was moving on the specified track. Finally, the efficiency of proposed controller was proven through the numerical simulation of the derived model.
