  • Due to I:he rapid increase of vehicles and poor availability of roads, traffic congestion problem is about to explode. To solve this problem, we need real time information about traffic flow to control traffic signals dynamically. Until now loop coil is the most prevalent sensor used for obtaining traffic flow information. However, it is not able to track individual vehicles which is essential in estimating the average vehicle speed. As a result, image sensors started to find their role in this problem domain. Several systems based on image sensors were proposed which assumes either gray level or color image sequence. In this paper, we propose moving vehicle tracking method based on fizzy clustering assuming a wlor image sequenc.

Daily Heating Performance of a Ground Source Multi-heat Pump at Heating Mode (지열원 물대공기 멀티 히트펌프의 일일 난방 운전 특성에 관한 실증 연구)

  • The aim of this study is to investigate the daily heating performance of ground source multi-heat pump system with vertical single U-tube type GLHXs, which were installed in a school building located in Cheonan. Daily average COP of heat pump unit on Jan. 12th, 2009 at heating mode was lower than it on Nov. 10th, 2008 and Dec. 15th, 2008, because of lower EWT of the outdoor heat exchanger and relatively smaller size of condenser and evaporator. But, the system COP on the former was higher than it on the latter because ground loop circulating pump was operated in rated speed. It is suggested that the new algorithms to control the flow rate of secondary fluid for GLHX according to load change have to be developed in order to enhance the performance of the system COP.

  • This paper presents the d-q axis equivalent circuit model of an interior permanent magnet (IPM) which includes the iron loss resistance. The model is implemented to be able to run in real-time on the FPGA-based HIL simulator. Power electronic devices are removed from the motor control unit (MCU) and a separated controller is interfaced with the real-time simulated motor drive through a set of proper inputs and outputs. The inputs signals of the HIL simulation are the gate driver signals generated from the controller, and the outputs are the winding currents and resolver signals. This paper especially presents iron loss prediction which is introduced by means of comparing the torque calculated from d-q axis currents and the desired torque; and minimizing the torque difference. This prediction method has stable prediction algorithm to reduce torque difference at specific speed and load. Simulation results demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed methods.

An Input-Powered High-Efficiency Interface Circuit with Zero Standby Power in Energy Harvesting Systems

  • This study presents an input-powered high-efficiency interface circuit for energy harvesting systems, and introduces a zero standby power design to reduce power consumption significantly while removing the external power supply. This interface circuit is composed of two stages. The first stage voltage doubler uses a positive feedback control loop to improve considerably the conversion speed and efficiency, and boost the output voltage. The second stage active diode adopts a common-grid operational amplifier (op-amp) to remove the influence of offset voltage in the traditional comparator, which eliminates leakage current and broadens bandwidth with low power consumption. The system supplies itself with the harvested energy, which enables it to enter the zero standby mode near the zero crossing points of the input current. Thereafter, high system efficiency and stability are achieved, which saves power consumption. The validity and feasibility of this design is verified by the simulation results based on the 65 nm CMOS process. The minimum input voltage is down to 0.3 V, the maximum voltage efficiency is 99.6% with a DC output current of 75.6 μA, the maximum power efficiency is 98.2% with a DC output current of 40.4 μA, and the maximum output power is 60.48 μW. The power loss of the entire interface circuit is only 18.65 μW, among which, the op-amp consumes only 2.65 μW.

  • The objective of the present study is to develope a propultion unit cooling system for the next-generation High-speed EMU. The propulsion power control unit consists of some IGBT semiconductors. In general, those power semiconductors are very sensitive to temperatures and need a cooling system to keep them at a proper operational conditions in the range of $50{\sim}100^{\circ}C$. In this first year of study, we tried to focuss on the understanding of fundamental technologies for each of the two different cooling systems and collecting basic data for design and manufacturing for both cases. For the water cooling system, a heat sink with multi channels of liquid flow was considered and a model unit was designed and performance test was conducted. For the heat pipe cooling system, a Loop Heat Pipe(LHP) was considered as an element to transport heat from IGBT to environment air flow and a model unit was designed and performance test was conducted. The analysis using SINDA/FLUINT showed that those design parameters are good enough for the LHP to properly operate under a heat load up to around 360W.

  • This paper propose an initial rotor position detection method for sensorless operation of a single-phase permanent magnet synchronous motor(SP-PMSM) with asymmetric air-gap. In general, the sensorless control based on back-emf estimation is difficult to estimate the back-emf at the zero and low speed regions. For this reason, an open loop start-up technique is indispensable, and it is also necessary to detect the initial position of the rotor in order to rotate in a certain direction. In this paper, we propose a method to detect rotor polarity by adding offset voltage to high frequency voltage signal based on the magnetic characteristics of SP-PMSM. The validity and usefulness of the proposed algorithm are verified through several experimental results.

Sparse decision feedback equalization for underwater acoustic channel based on minimum symbol error rate

  • Underwater Acoustic Channels (UAC) have inherent sparse characteristics. The traditional adaptive equalization techniques do not utilize this feature to improve the performance. In this paper we consider the Variable Adaptive Subgradient Projection (V-ASPM) method to derive a new sparse equalization algorithm based on the Minimum Symbol Error Rate (MSER) criterion. Compared with the original MSER algorithm, our proposed scheme adds sparse matrix to the iterative formula, which can assign independent step-sizes to the equalizer taps. How to obtain such proper sparse matrix is also analyzed. On this basis, the selection scheme of the sparse matrix is obtained by combining the variable step-sizes and equalizer sparsity measure. We call the new algorithm Sparse-Control Proportional-MSER (SC-PMSER) equalizer. Finally, the proposed SC-PMSER equalizer is embedded into a turbo receiver, which perform turbo decoding, Digital Phase-Locked Loop (DPLL), time-reversal receiving and multi-reception diversity. Simulation and real-field experimental results show that the proposed algorithm has better performance in convergence speed and Bit Error Rate (BER).

  • The rotor blade is modeled using a composite box beam with arbitrary wall. The active constrained damping layers are bonded to the upper and lower surfaces of the box beam to provide active and passive damping. A finite element model, based on a hybrid displacement theory, is used in the structural analysis. The theory is capable of accurately capturing the transverse shear effects in the composite primary structure, the viscoelastic and the piezoelectric layers within the ACLs. A reduced order model is derived based on the Hankel singular value. A linear quadratic Gaussian (LQG) controller is designed based on the reduced order model and the available measurement output. However, the LQG control system fails to stabilize the perturbed system although it shows good control performance at the nominal operating condition. To improve the robust stability of LQG controller, the loop transfer recovery (LTR) method is applied. Numerical results show that the proposed controller significantly improves rotor aeromechanical stability and suppresses rotor response over large variations in rotating speed by increasing lead-lag modal damping in the coupled rotor-body system.

An Experimental Study on the Pump Operating Characteristics with Low Flow Operation (펌프의 저 유량 운전특성에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • For ASME Code pumps in nuclear power plants, inservice test is required to assess the operational readiness in accordance with ASME code and related regulations. The objective of this study therefore, is to develop the technical background of the degradation of pump performances and conditions due to low flow rate operation. In addition. the detection techniques of pump operating conditions are to be developed to enhance the safety and economy of nuclear power plants. A test loop consisted of pump, motor. water tank, flow rate measurements and piping system with flow control devices was established for this study. Two typical pumps, 1-stage volute pump and 3-stage turbine pump, were selected and the test was performed upon two major point of views ; i.e., pump discharge pressure pulsations analysis and pump vibration spectrum analysis. From the test results, it is concluded that (1) the pump vibration affected by the natural frequency of operating pump is significant in the low frequency zone (around 1 Hz) : the vibration amplitude. especially. is an important factor during low flow rate operation. and shall be monitored to ensure that it is within the limit of ASME OM code Part 6, (2) the vibration frequency and pump discharge pressure are affected by vane pass frequency and running speed, (3) the wave phenomena due to the compressiblity of water is anticipated during low flow rate operation. and the pump system shall be designed to prevent it and. finally, (4) the technical background of the degradation of pump performances and conditions due to low flow rate operation is provided.

  • We have studied a tiled-aperture coherent-beam-combining system based on constructive interference, as a way to overcome the power limitation of a single laser. A 1-watt-level, 3-channel coherent fiber laser and a 3-channel fiber array of triangular tiling with tip-tilt function were developed. A monitoring system, phase controller, and 3-channel phase modulator formed a closed-loop control system, and the SPGD algorithm was applied. Eventually, phase-locking with a rate of 5-67 kHz and peak-intensity efficiency comparable to the ideal case of 53.3% was successfully realized. We were able to develop the essential elements for a tiled-aperture coherent-beam-combining system that had the potential for highest output power without any beam-combining components, and a multichannel coherent-beam-combining system with higher output power and high speed is anticipated in the future.
