Development of Titanium Dioxide Analytical Method on Commercial Foods in Korea (국내 식품중 이산화티타늄의 분석법 개발)

  • This study was performed to analyze the contents of titanium dioxide in commercial foods by UV/VIS spectrophotometry. This method incorporated foods reducing to ashes, dissolution of the ash in sulfuric acid and color development using hydrogen peroxide. The UV/VIS spectrophotometric response was compared to a standard solution. The contents of titanium dioxide in commercial foods were 1.56∼7.74 g/kg in chocolate, 0.27∼1.74 g/kg in health food, 0.48∼2.96 g/kg in chewing gum and 0.34∼2.34 g/kg in candy, respectively. Recoveries of titanium dioxide in foods were 88.46∼104.75% accordingly.

  • The rate Constants and energies of activation for the Combustion reaction of Korean anthracites have obtained by DTA method using the following rate equation derived by authors. $K=\frac{C_3{\cdot}W_0}{{\Delta}H{\cdot}{\Delta}C{\cdot}M{\cdot}S_A}(\frac{dy}{dt}+A(y-y_3))$ The anthracites of various ranks were treated at the different temperatures in the furnace. The probable combustion reaction mechanisms have discussed with the results obtained by the X-ray diffraction method, IR spectroscophic analysis, and gas chromatography. By the intensity of d(002) Values, it was confirmed that a parts of the amorphous carbon was converted to graphite form by heat treatment. The appreciable amounts of CO gas were expelled in the combustion process and it appeared that a little amount of the gas came from the catalytic decomposition of anthracites, The functional groups such as -OH, -SH, -NH, $-CH_2-CH_3,$ -CO, -COC-. and polycondensed aromatic rings in anthracites have observed by IR spectrophotometric analysis.

  • The stereochemical ratio cis and trans isomer of the hydration reaction of trans-$[Co(en)(tmd)Cl_2]^+$ complex ion were studied with varing temperature by the spectrophotometric method. It was observed that the ratio of cis-isomer was about 30%, and the intermediate was rearranged. And in order to investigate this mechanism more clearly, stability energy profile, interaction diagram and orbital correlation diagram were calculated by the EHT method. By the calculation, the mechanism of cis-isomer was in good agreement with the experimental results, and it was estimated that the hydration reaction was carried through some distorted square pyramid (sp).

A Study on the Band Characteristics of ZnSe Thin Film with Zinc-blende Structure (Zinc Blende 구조를 가지는 ZnSe 결정의 밴드 특성에 관한 연구)

  • ZnSe, as a II-VI compound semiconductor which has a wide band gap in the visible region is applicable to the various fields such as laser diode, display and solar cell. By using the electrochemical deposition method, ZnSe thin film was synthesized on the ITO glass substrate. The synthesis of ZnSe grains and their structure having zinc blende shape were verified through the analysis of XRD and SEM. UV spectrophotometric method determined the band gap as the value of 2.76 eV. Applying the DFT (Density Functional Theory) in the molecular dynamics, the band structure of ZnSe grains was analyzed. For ZnSe grains with zinc blende structure, the band structure and its density of state were simulated using LDA (Local Density Approximation), PBE (Perdew Burke Ernzerhof), and B3LYP (Becke, 3-parameter, Lee-Yang-Parr) functionals. Among the calculations of energy band gap upon each functional, the simulated one of 2.65 eV based on the B3LYP functional was mostly near by the experimental measurement.

Structural and thermal analysis of electrochemically Li intercalated synthetic graphite (전기 화학적으로 리튬이 층간 삽입된 인조흑연의 구조와 열적 특성 분석)

  • The characteristics of the electrochemically Li intercalated synthetic graphite were determined from the studies with XRD method, DSC and solid $^7Li-NMR$ spectrophotometric analysis. From the results of X-ray diffraction method, it was found that the compounds in the stage 1 structure were predominantly formed. The enthalpy and entropy changes of the compounds can be obtained from the differential scanning calorimetric analysis results. From these results, it was found that exothermic and endothermic reactions of lithium intercalated into synthetic graphite are related to thermal stability of lithium ion between carbon graphene layers. From the $^7Li-NMR$ data, scientific observation found that bands are shift toward higher frequencies with increasing lithium concentration because non-occupied electron shells of Li increased in charge carrier density. Line widths of the Li intercalated synthetic graphite compounds decreased slowly because of non-homogeneous local magnetic order and the random electron spin direction for substituted Li.

  • Along with synthesizing a model oligodeoxyribonuclotide GpApApTpTpCp which had the EcoRI recognition site according to "Phosphotriester Method", reported methods for protecting functions, condensation, deprotection, purifying products, quantification and identification were evaluated and modified. It was realized that oligomers were efficiently synthesized by elongating by dimer unit per step of the condensation and the condensation yields were decreased with increased numbers of the residues. The problems of quantification/identification involved in the oligonucleotide synthesis using small amount of the reactants were solved by employing UV/IR spectrophotometry and hplc/tlc. It was also proved that a nucleotide having the exposed 5'-OH function was well synthesized by condensing a 5'-OH nucleotide and a phosphodiester nucleotide whose molar ratio was intendedly made to be 1 : 1.2 and then detritylating followed by washing with an aqueous solution of sodium bicarbonate. Spectrophotometric and chromatographic data of the nucleotides and their derivatives concerned in this synthetic work were prepared.

Establishing Quantitative Standards for Residual Alkaline Phosphatase in Pasteurized Milk

  • The alkaline phosphatase (ALP) assay is a rapid and convenient method for verifying milk pasteurization. Since colorimetric ALP assays rely on subjective visual assessments, their results are especially unreliable near the detection limits. In this study, we attempted to establish quantitative criteria for residual ALP in milk by using a more objective method based on spectrophotometric measurements. Raw milk was heat-treated for 0, 10, 20, 30, and 40 min and then subjected to ALP assays. The quantitative criteria for residual ALP in the milk was determined as 2 μg phenol/mL of milk, which is just above the ALP value of milk samples heat-treated for 30 min. These newly proposed methodology and criteria could facilitate the microbiological quality control of milk.

  • We developed a spectrophotometric assay method for polyethoxylated ascorbic acidusing 3-ethyl ascorbic acid as standard material. The analytical method was validated by linearity, accuracy, precision, and stability. The coefficient of variation of the precision of the assay was less than 3.4 %. The linearity of the calibration curves in the desired concentration range is good ($r^2$>0.998). 3-Ethyl ascorbic acid and polyethoxylated ascorbic acid were stable in stock solution at room temperature for up to at least 6 h. The developed assay could be used for the content analysis of polyethoxylated ascorbic acid in samples.

Synthesis of New Boron Derived Compounds; Anticancer, Antioxidant and Antimicrobial Effect in Vitro Glioblastoma Tumor Model

  • Objective : The aim of our study is to investigate the cytotoxic, antioxidant, and antimicrobial effects of newly synthesized boron compounds in U87MG glioblastoma cell treatment. Methods : We synthesized boron glycine monoester (BGM) and boron glycine diester (BGD) structures containing boron atoms and determined their cytotoxic activities on glioblastoma by the MTT method. The inhibitory concentration 50 (IC50) value was calculated with GraphPad Prism 5.0 program. The IC50 values were administered 48 hours on U87MG glioblastoma cell. Catalase (CAT), acid phosphatase (ACP) and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) enzyme activity, malondialdehyde (MDA), total glutathione (GSH), and total protein levels were detected using spectrophotometric methods. We determined the antimicrobial activities of BGM and BGD with the disc diffusion method. Results : After 48 hours of BGM and BGD application to U87MG glioblastoma cells, we found the IC50 value as 6.6 mM and 26 mM, respectively. CAT and ACP enzyme activities were decreased in BGM and BGD groups. MDA which is a metabolite of lipid peroxidation was increased in both boron compounds groups. GSH level was reduced especially in BGD group. BGM and BGD have been found to be antimicrobial effects. Conclusion : Boron compounds, especially the BGM, can provide a new therapeutic approach for the treatment of glioblastoma with their anticancer, antioxidant, and antimicrobial effects.

Solubilization of Cresol Isomers by the Cationic Surfactant of TTTAB in Aqueous Solution of n-Butanol and NaCl (n-부탄올 및 NaCl 수용액에서 양이온 계면활성제인 TTAB에 의한 크레졸 이성질체들의 가용화에 대한 연구)

  • We tried to investigate the effects of substituent position, temperature, and additives such as NaCl and n-butanol on the solubilizations of cresol isomers by tetradecyltrimethylammonium bromide (TTAB), using the UV-Vis spectrophotometric method. The measured solubilization constants (Ks) values for each cresol isomer increased in the order o-cresolo and ∆Ho values for the solubilizations of cresols were all negative values but the ∆So values were all positive values within the measured ranges. The values of ∆Go increased also with increasing the concentration of n-butanol but decreased with increasing the concentration of NaCl. From these facts, we could conclude that both the enthalpy and entropy changes contribute together for the solubilizations of cresols isomers by cationic surfactant of TTAB and they are solubilized in the polar palisade region or at the surface of micelle.
