One of the main unresolved issues in large-eddy simulation(LES) of wall-bounded turbulent flows is the requirement of high spatial resolution in the near-wall region, especially in the spanwise direction. Such high resolution required in the near-wall region is generally used throughout the computational domain, making simulations of high Reynolds number, complex-geometry flows prohibitive. A grid-embedding strategy using a nonconforming spectral domain-decomposition method is proposed to address this limitation. This method provides an efficient way of clustering grid points in the near-wall region with spectral accuracy. LES of transitional and turbulent channel flow has been performed to evaluate the proposed grid-embedding technique. The computational domain is divided into three subdomains to resolve the near-wall regions in the spanwise direction. Spectral patching collocation methods are used for the grid-embedding and appropriate conditions are suggested for the interface matching. Results of LES using the grid-embedding strategy are promising compared to LES of global spectral method and direct numerical simulation. Overall, the results show that the spectral domain-decomposition grid-embedding technique provides an efficient method for resolving the near-wall region in LES of complex flows of engineering interest, allowing significant savings in the computational CPU and memory.

An algorithm to enhance spectra matching of acceleration time history used in the seismic analysis of nuclear power plants(NPP) is proposed. The new scheme provides the solution on the highly fluctuating and over conservatism problems that happened in order to satisfy design spectrum enveloping criteria in the traditional method. To obtain optimized spectrum for a time history, a spectrum matching procedure that adapts a system identification technique is also developed. The algorithm also introduces maximum displacement control, baseline correction, clipping and raising of maximum peak of time history, and power spectral density (PSD) control of time history. It is verified through numerical examples that this new scheme can definitely generate acceleration time history, closely matching the target spectra and satisfying other stipulated requirements.
This paper presents experimental and numerical studies on the seismic responses of the steel cabinet facility considering the nonlinear behavior of connections and site-response effects. Three finite element (FE) models with differences of type and number of connections between steel plates and frame members have been developed to demonstrate adequately dynamic responses of structures. The screw connections with the bilinear force-deformation relationship are proposed to represent the inelastic behavior of the cabinet. The experiment is carried out to provide a verification with improved FE models. It shows that the natural frequencies of the cabinet are sensitive to the plate and frame connectors. The screw connections reduce the free vibration compared to the weld one, with decreased values of 2.82% and 4.87% corresponding to front-to-back and side-to-side directions. Additionally, the seismic responses are investigated for various geological configurations. Input time histories are generated so that their response spectrums are compatible with a required response spectrum via the time-domain spectral matching. The results indicate that both site effects and nonlinear behavior of connections affect greatly on the seismic response of structures.
The MODerate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) sensor has 36 bands at 250m, 500m, 1km spatial resolution. However, 500m or 1km MODIS data exhibits a few limitations when low resolution data is applied at small areas that possess complex land cover types. In this study, we produce seven 250m spectral bands by fusing two MODIS 250m bands into five 500m bands. In order to recommend the best fusion method by which one acquires MODIS data, we compare seven fusion methods including the Brovey transform, principle components algorithm (PCA) fusion method, the Gram-Schmidt fusion method, the least mean and variance matching method, the least square fusion method, the discrete wavelet fusion method, and the wavelet-PCA fusion method. Results of the above fusion methods are compared using various evaluation indicators such as correlation, relative difference of mean, relative variation, deviation index, peak signal-to-noise ratio index and universal image quality index, as well as visual interpretation method. Among various fusion methods, the local mean and variance matching method provides the best fusion result for the visual interpretation and the evaluation indicators. The fusion algorithm of 250m MODIS data may be used to effectively improve the accuracy of various MODIS land products.
Spectral modeling synthesis (SMS) has been used as a powerful tool for musical sound modeling. This technique considers a sound as a combination of a deterministic plus a stochastic component. The deterministic component is represented by the series of sinusoids that are described by amplitude, frequency, and phase functions and the stochastic component is represented by a series of magnitude spectrum envelopes that functions as a time varying filter excited by white noise. These representations make it possible for a synthesized sound to attain all the perceptual characteristics of the original sound. However, sometimes considerable phase variations occur in the deterministic component by using the conventional SMS for the complex sound such as whale sounds when the partial frequencies in successive frames differ. This is because it utilizes the calculated phase to synthesize deterministic component of the sound. As a result, it does not provide a good spectrum matching between original and synthesized spectrum in higher frequency region. To overcome this problem, we propose a modified SMS that provides good spectrum matching of original and synthesized sound by calculating complex residual spectrum in frequency domain and utilizing original phase information to synthesize the deterministic component of the sound. Analysis and simulation results for synthesizing whale sounds suggest that the proposed method is comparable to the conventional SMS in both time and frequency domain. However, the proposed method outperforms the SMS in better spectrum matching.
For TOPS InSAR processing, high-precision image co-registration is required. We propose an image co-registration method suitable for the TOPS mode by comparing the performance of cross correlation method, the geometric co-registration and the enhanced spectral diversity (ESD) matching algorithm based on the spectral diversity (SD) on the Sentinel-1 TOPS mode image. Using 23 pairs of interferometric pairs generated from 25 Sentinel-1 TOPS images, we applied the cross correlation (CC), geometric correction with only orbit information (GC1), geometric correction combined with iterative cross-correlation (GC2, GC3, GC4), and ESD iteration (ESD_GC, ESD_1, ESD_2). The mean of co-registration errors in azimuth direction by cross correlation and geometric matching are 0.0041 pixels and 0.0016 pixels, respectively. Although the ESD method shows the most accurate result with the error of less than 0.0005 pixels, the error of geometric co-registration is reduced to 0.001 pixels by repetition through additional cross correlation matching between the reference and resampled slave image. The ESD method is not applicable when the coherence of the burst overlap areas is low. Therefore, the geometric co-registration method through iterative processing is a suitable alternative for time series analysis using multiple SAR data or generating interferogram with long time intervals.
Atmospheric correction of Landsat Visible and Near Infrared imagery (VIS/NIR) over aquatic environment is more demanding than over land because the signal from the water column is small and it carries immense information about biogeochemical variables in the ocean. This paper introduces two methods, a modified dark-pixel substraction technique (path--extraction) and our spectral shape matching method (SSMM), for the correction of the atmospheric effects in the Landsat VIS/NIR imagery in relation to the retrieval of meaningful information about the ocean color, especially from Case-2 waters (Morel and Prieur, 1977) around Korean peninsula. The results of these methods are compared with the classical atmospheric correction approaches based on the 6S radiative transfer model and standard SeaWiFS atmospheric algorithm. The atmospheric correction scheme using 6S radiative transfer code assumes a standard atmosphere with constant aerosol loading and a uniform, Lambertian surface, while the path-extraction assumes that the total radiance (L/sub TOA/) of a pixel of the black ocean (referred by Antoine and Morel, 1999) in a given image is considered as the path signal, which remains constant over, at least, the sub scene of Landsat VIS/NIR imagery. The assumption of SSMM is nearly similar, but it extracts the path signal from the L/sub TOA/ by matching-up the in-situ data of water-leaving radiance, for typical clear and turbid waters, and extrapolate it to be the spatially homogeneous contribution of the scattered signal after complex interaction of light with atmospheric aerosols and Raleigh particles, and direct reflection of light on the sea surface. The overall shape and magnitude of radiance or reflectance spectra of the atmospherically corrected Landsat VIS/NIR imagery by SSMM appears to have good agreement with the in-situ spectra collected for clear and turbid waters, while path-extraction over turbid waters though often reproduces in-situ spectra, but yields significant errors for clear waters due to the invalid assumption of zero water-leaving radiance for the black ocean pixels. Because of the standard atmosphere with constant aerosols and models adopted in 6S radiative transfer code, a large error is possible between the retrieved and in-situ spectra. The efficiency of spectral shape matching has also been explored, using SeaWiFS imagery for turbid waters and compared with that of the standard SeaWiFS atmospheric correction algorithm, which falls in highly turbid waters, due to the assumption that values of water-leaving radiance in the two NIR bands are negligible to enable retrieval of aerosol reflectance in the correction of ocean color imagery. Validation suggests that accurate the retrieval of water-leaving radiance is not feasible with the invalid assumption of the classical algorithms, but is feasible with SSMM.

The purpose of this study was to develop the color matching program with the excellent camouflage capacity in the near infrared range($\~$1100nm) including the visible light range for cotton fabrics. It was measured IR spectral reflectance in the range of $380\~1,100nm$ after dyed with vat dyes, and we made database for reflectance with various concentration on vat dyes which have a low reflectance value in the infrared range. The color matching algorithm that could be simulated in both the human visible light and the near infrared range was constructed by numerical analysis method using the database. In this study we also developed the dyeing conditions and dyeing process through the continuous-dyeing experiment with the vat dyes for cotton fabrics.
Recently, land cover spectral libraries have been widely used in studies to classify land cover based on hyperspectral images. Overseas, various institutions have built and provided land cover spectral libraries, but in Korea, the building and provision of land cover spectral libraries is insufficient. Against this background, the purpose of this study is to suggest the possibility of using domestic and foreign spectral libraries in the classification studies of domestic land cover. Band matching is required for comparative analysis of the spectral libraries and land cover classification using the spectral libraries, and in this study, an automation logic to automatically perform this is presented. In addition, the directly constructed domestic land cover spectral library and the existing overseas land cover spectral library were comparatively analyzed. As a result, the directly constructed land cover spectral library had the highest correlation coefficient of 0.974. Finally, for the accuracy evaluation, aerial hyperspectral images of the study area were supervised and classified using the domestic and foreign land cover spectral libraries using the SAM technique. As a result of the accuracy evaluation, it is judged that Soils, Artificial Materials, and Coatings among the classification items of the foreign land cover spectral library can be sufficiently applied to classify the cover in Korea.
