  • In general, spatial filtering method was proposed to simplify measurement system through parallel Processing hardware. Spatial filtering is a method of detection that we can get a spatial pattern information, as we process a special space pattern, to say, as we process spatial parallel process by using the spatial weighting function. The important processing characteristics will be depended in according to how ire design a spatial weighting function, a spatial sensitive distribution. The form of the weighting function which is realized from the generally used spatial filtering is fixed and the weighting value was already became a binary-value. In this paper, we propose a new method in order to construct adaptive measurement systems. This method is a weighting function design to make multi-valued and variable.

  • In this paper, we propose a new temporal interpolation method based on spatial filtering. Compared with the conventional method, the proposed one may use a few adjacent frames and apply temporal lowpass filtering. To develop this method, we follow the basic approach of sampling rate conversion. Additionally, we use some assumption of video sequence : moving object has constant velocity rigid translational motion. From them, spatial filtering for temporal sampling rate conversion is described. This method has a lot of noise immunity on a motion vector and doesn't make a great difference from the original frame. The interpolated frame shows moderate change even there is a great time difference. This method has exactly same description of motion adaptive spatial filter which has an efficient temporal band-limiting characteristics. It imposes the possibility to make video sequence with good pictural quality.

  • In this paper, we propose a novel reconstruction method of spatially filtered 3D images in integral imaging based on parallel lens array. The parallel lens array is composed of two lens arrays, which are positioned side by side through longitudinal direction. Conventional spatial filtering method by using convolution property between periodic functions has drawback that is the limitation of the position of target object. this caused the result that the target object should be located on the low depth resolution region. The available spatial filtering region of the spatial filtering method is depending on the focal length and the number of elemental lens in the integral imaging pickup system. In this regard, we propose the parallel lens array system to enhance the available spatial filtering region and depth resolution. The experiment result indicate that the proposed method outperforms the conventional method.

  • This paper proposes an efficient array beamforming method using spatial matched filtering for ultrasound imaging. In the proposed method, ultrasound waves are transmitted from an array subaperture with fixed transmit focus as in conventional array imaging. At receive, radio frequency (RF) echo signals from each receive channel are passed through a spatial matched filter that is constructed based on the system transmit-receive spatial impulse response. The filtered echo signals are then summed. The filter remaps and spatially registers the acoustic energy from each element so that the pulse-echo impulse response of the summed output is focused with acceptably low side lobes. Analytical beam pattern analysis and simulation results using a linear array show that the proposed spatial filtering method can provide more improved spatial resolution and contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) compared with conventional dynamic receive focusing (DRF) method by implementing two-way dynamically focused beam pattern throughout the field.

  • For the smooth flow of traffic vehicles and its effective management, it is necessary to have an exact information on traffic condition, i.e., the volume of traffic, velocity, occupancy and classification of vehicles. In particular, for classification of vehicles, there has been only image processing method using camera, where the method can obtain much information but rather expensive. In this paper, an algorithm for the measurement of velocity and total length of vehicles has been proposed to develop a general traffic management system, which is necessary to discriminate the class of vehicles. In order to realize the proposed algorithm, we have developed an ultrasonic spatial filtering method, which has better performance than that of using the traditional vehicle detector. To have this system to be constructed, we have introduced three sets of ultrasonic devices where each has one transmitter and two receivers which are arranged to obtain the spatial difference of objects. The velocity of vehicles can be measured by analyzing the occurrence time of pulses and their time differences. The total length of vehicles can be given by multiplying velocity with time interval of pulses sequence. To confirm the effectiveness of this measuring system, the experiment by the spatial filtering method using the ultrasonic sensors has been carried out. As the results, it is found that the proposed method can be used as one of measurement tools in the general traffic management system.

  • TM data, which have better resolution in spatial and spectral than MSS data, were used for this study, and several Image Processing Techniques (IPT) were examined for finding the best IPT to fit to lineament extraction and mineralized zone mapping. The Ryeongnam area was selected as test area, because the area is one of major mineralized zones in Korea and its hydrothermal alteration zone is wider and deeper than other areas. The spatial filtering method is most optimum one for limeament extraction: that is, the directional spatial filtering is most efficient to detect N-S, E-W direction lineaments on the image, and the high boost filtering can be applied for mapping all direction lineaments. The ratio method was selected for detecting altered zone. It is possible to make several tens combinations in ratio with 7 bands of TM data, but considering spectral characteristics of each band of TM to the geological meterials and vegetation, the band 4/band 3(A), band 5/band 7(B), and B/A ratio methods were chosen among them. The 5/7 ratio image did not show clearly the altered area due to noise from vegetation cover, so the 4/3 ratio imae was used for trying to decrease the effect of vegetation. As a result the B/A ratio image showed quite nicely the altered zone of the test area. In conclusion, the spatial filtering is the best image processing techniques for lineament mapping, and the B/A ratio image in TM data is useful for the mineralized zone mapping.

  • In this paper, we propose a new real-time dead pixel detection method based on spatial compare filtering, which are usually used in the small target detection. Actually, the soft dead and the small target are cast in the same mold. Our proposed method detect and remove the dead pixels as applying the spatial compare filtering, into the pixel outputs of a detector after the non-uniformity correction. Therefore, we proposed method can effectively detect and replace the dead pixels regardless of the non-uniformity correction performance. In infrared camera, there are usually many dead detector pixels which produce abnormal output caused by manufactural process or operational environment. There are two kind of dead pixel. one is hard dead pixel which electronically generate abnormal outputs and other is soft dead pixel which changed and generated abnormal outputs by the planning process. Infrared camera have to perform non-uniformity correction because of structural and material properties of infrared detector. The hard dead pixels whose offset values obtained by non-uniformity correction are much larger or smaller than the average can be detected easily as dead pixels. However, some dead pixels(soft dead pixel) can remain, because of the difficulty of uncleared decision whether normal pixel or abnormal pixel.

  • The speech intelligibility is one of the most important factors in communication system. The speech intelligibility is related with speech to noise ratio. To enhance the speech to noise ratio, background noise reduction techniques are being developed. As a part of solution to noise reduction, this paper introduces directional microphone using beamforming method and speech filtering method. The directional microphone narrows the spatial range of processing signal into the direction of the target speech signal. The noise signal located in the same direction with speech still remains in the processing signal. To sort this mixed signal into speech and noise, as a following step, a speech-filtering method is applied to pick up only the speech signal from the processed signal. The speech filtering method is based on the characteristics of speech signal itself. The combined directional microphone and speech filtering method gives enhanced performance to speech intelligibility in communication system.

  • Defects inspection of commodities are very important with those design and manufacturing process and essential to strengthen the competitiveness of those. If on-line automatic defects detection is performed without damaging to products, the production cost shall be curtailed through the reducing man-power, economical management of Q.C(Quality Control). In this paper, it is suggested three spatial filtering methods which can extract the necessary information in case of defects being on the surface of object like iron plate. In addition, the dependence of filtering characteristics on parameters such as the pitch and width of slits is analyzed and the surface defect detection system is constructed. Several experiments were carried out for determining the adequate spatial filtering method through comparing and analyzing effects of parameters like defect's size and shape, intensity of light, noise of coherent source and slit number.

  • We present a fast inspection method of machine vision for in-line quality assurance of liquid crystal displays(LCD) and plasma display panels(PDP). The method incorporates an optical spatial filter in the Fourier plane of the imaging optics to block the normal periodic pattern, extracting only defects real time without relying on intensive software image process. Special emphasis is on designing a collimated white light source to provide high degree of spatial coherence for effective real time Fourier transform. At the same time, a low level of temporal coherence is attained to improve defect detection capabilities by avoiding undesirable coherent noises. Experimental results show that the proposed inspection method offers a detection accuracy of 15% tolerance, which is sufficient for industrial applications.
