  • One of the fundamental components important to the analysis of spatial objects is to represent topological relationships between spatial features. Users of geographic information systems retrieve a lot of objects from spatial database and analyze their condition by means of topological relationships. The existing methods that represent these relationships have the disadvantage that they have limited information in $R^2$. In this paper, we represent and define the topological relationships between 3-dimensional spatial objects using the several representing methods of 2-dimensional features. We use the diverse representing methods, which include the 4-, 9-intersection, dimension extended and calculus-based method. Furthermore, we discuss OGC's topological relationships and operators for 3-dimensional spatial data.

  • This research is progressed on the premise that there is a basic rule to organize a space in form generation process. In this study first, antecedent researches are inquired, and formal vocabularies related with form generation in space design are founded. Generally in the organizing process of spatial form designer could have selectively combined formal vocabularies consciously or unconsciously, and these formal vocabularies related with form generation are classified with 'formal elements' and 'spatial relationships'. First, as formal elements '2-dimensional line elements(rectilinear, oblique-linear, curvilinear)' are chosen. Second, formal vocabularies of 'spatial relationships' are 37 extracted from literatures related with architectural language or spatial language. Among them there are several vocabularies with similar or same meaning, they are unitized to representative one. Thereupon 20 vocabularies are finally selected as the formal vocabularies of 'spatial relationships', they are addition, subtraction, intersection, superimposition, juxtaposition, shifting, rotation, reflection, scaling, stretching, shear, bending, folding, distortion, articulation, deconstruction, symmetry, repetition, proportion, and asymmetry.

  • Topological relationships play an important role in query optimization in spatial databases. If topological relationships are known a priori, then expensive query processing can be avoided. In this paper we address the problems of: ⅰ) identifying topological relationships among spatial objects, ⅱ) checking consistency of specified topological relationships, and ⅲ) exhaustively deriving new topological relationships from the ones specified. These activities lead to an efficient query processing when queries associated with topological relationships are invoked. Specifically, eight types of topological relationships ({equal, disjoint, overlap, meets, contains, contained-in, properly-contains, and properly-contained-in}) are considered. We present an algorithm to check the consistency of specified topological relationships and to derive all possible relationships from the given set of known relationships.

  • This paper presents spatial relationshaps and engineering features for the feature based modeling of Sheet Metal Weld Assemblies (SMWA) that are made of sheet metal components through are welding processes. Spatial relationships in ProMod-S, a sheet metal product modeler, are further extended for the SMWA modeling. Some spatial relationships for special weld joint types are newly introduced. The geometrical and topological relations between spatial reationship, mating features, and assembly features are defined. Finally, assembly data stucturess for the product modeling of SMWA are proposed. They are an engineering relation to represent the constraints between component features, and a mating bond to integrate component design information.

  • Most of the previous game development has proceeded in the approaches of the temporal-oriented synchronization because of producing game objects by using general authoring tools, and ad hoc or trial and error methods has been devised for representation of spatial concept. This paper is a study on the unification notation for spatio-temporal synchronization to conquest this fault. First of all, we classify game space as temporal object, spatial object, absolute/relative spatio-temporal space. The spatio-temporal relationships are divided into temporal extent, temporal location, spatial extent, and spatial location. In the paper the temporal and spatial relationships of game scene are defined to represent the synchronization, and we propose new unification notation by temporal and spatial concept to represent two concepts putting emphasis on space. Their relationships are presented on 3D by creating time axis related with time in scene unit of the two dimensional plane in the pivot on space. The usability of this representation method are shown by applying examples of game scenario.

  • Retrieval of images from image databases by spatial relationship can be effectively performed through visual interface systems. In these systems, the representation of image with 2D strings, which are derived from symbolic projections, provides an efficient and natural way to construct image index and is also an ideal representation for the visual query. With this approach, retrieval is reduced to matching two symbolic strings. However, using 2D-string representations, spatial relationships between the objects in the image might not be exactly specified. Ambiguities arise for the retrieval of images of 3D scenes. In order to remove ambiguous description of object spatial relationships, in this paper, images are referred by considering spatial relationships using the spatial location algebra for the 3D image scene. Also, we remove the repetitive spatial relationships using the several reduction rules. A reduction mechanism using these rules can be used in query processing systems that retrieve images by content. This could give better precision and flexibility in image retrieval.

  • Using appropriate raw materials for cement is crucial for providing the required products. Monitoring relationships and analyzing distributions in a cement material quarry are important stages in the process. CaO, one of the substantial chemical components, is included in some raw materials such as limestone and marl; furthermore, appraising spatial assessment of this chemical component is also very critical. In this study, spatial evaluation and monitoring of CaO concentrations in a cement site are considered. For this purpose, two effective regression-based models were applied to a cement quarry located in Turkey. For the assessment, some spatial models were developed and performance comparisons were carried out. The results show that the regression-based spatial modelling is an efficient methodology and it can be employed to evaluate spatially varying relationships in a cement quarry.

  • Graph databases, which store different types of data and their relationships modeled as a graph, can be effective in managing and analyzing real estate spatial data linked by complex relationships. However, they are not widely used due to the limited spatial functionalities of graph databases. In this study, we propose a uniform grid-based real estate spatial data management approach using a graph database to respond to various real estate-related spatial questions. By analyzing the real estate community to identify relevant data and utilizing national point numbers as unit grids, we construct a graph schema that linking diverse real estate data, and create a test database. After building a test database, we tested basic topological relationships and spatial functions using the Jackpine benchmark, and further conducted query tests based on various scenarios to verify the appropriateness of the proposed method. The results show that the proposed method successfully executed 25 out of 29 spatial topological relationships and spatial functions, and achieved about 97% accuracy for the 25 functions and 15 scenarios. The significance of this study lies in proposing an efficient data integration method that can respond to real estate-related spatial questions, considering the limited spatial operation capabilities of graph databases. However, there are limitations such as the creation of incorrect spatial topological relationships due to the use of grid-based indexes and inefficiency of queries due to list comparisons, which need to be improved in follow-up studies.

Abstract The update of a long transaction should be propagated to the other sites for consistency control, when spatial database are replicated at multiple sites to achieve availability, reliability, and performance. When the replicated spatial data are updated at the same time, the update of one site would be conflicted with the other or a user would not be able to access the replicated spatial data under the control of locking. Two spatial objects having spatial relationships should be cooperatively updated even if there are no conflicts of locking for them. This paper deals with the issues of concurrency control and update propagation of replicated spatial data. We present the concept of region lock and SR-bound WRITE lock for enhancing the parallelism of updating the replicated spatial data. If there are no spatial relationships between one site's objets and the other's objects, parallel update would be allowed. Concurrent update of two spatial objects having spatial relationships should be propagated and cooperated by using an extended two-phase commit protocol, called spatial relationship-based 2PC.

  • Spatial relationships among objects are one of the important ingredients for expressing constraints of an image in image or multimedia retrieval systems. In this paper, we propose a unified image retrieval scheme using spatial relationships among objects and their features. The proposed scheme is especially effective in computing similarity between query image and images in the database. Also, objects and their spatial relationships are captured and annotated in XML. It could give better precision and flexibility in retrieving images from database. Finally, we have implemented a prototype system for retrieving images based on proposed technique and showed some of the experiment results.
