  • In this study, the axial compressive behavior of novel quadruple C-channel built-up cold-formed steel columns with different slenderness ratio was investigated, using the experimental and numerical analysis. The axial compressive capacity and failure modes of the columns were obtained and analyzed. The finite element models considering the geometry, material and contact nonlinearity were developed to simulate and analyze the structural behavior of the columns further. There was a great correlation between the numerical analyses and test results, which indicated that the finite element model was reasonable and accurate. Then influence of, slenderness ratio, flange width-to-thickness ratio and screw spacing on the mechanical behavior of the columns were studied, respectively. The tests and numerical results show that due to small slenderness ratio, the failure modes of the specimens are generally local buckling and distortional buckling. The axial compressive strength and stiffness of the quadruple C-channel built-up cold-formed steel columns decrease with the increase of maximum slenderness ratio. When the screw spacing is ranging from 150mm to 450mm, the axial compressive strength and stiffness of the quadruple C-channel built-up cold-formed steel columns change little. The axial compressive capacity of quadruple C-channel built-up cold-formed steel columns increases with the decrease of flange width-thickness ratio. A modified effective length factor is proposed to quantify the axial compressive capacity of the quadruple C-channel built-up cold-formed steel columns with U-shaped track in the ends.

  • In this study, the tensile behavior of concrete specimens reinforced with GFRP (Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer), BFRP (Basalt Fiber Reinforced Polymer), and CFRP (Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer) bars was experimentally analyzed. The tensile strength of the FRP bars is appeared to be similar to the design strength, but the elastic modulus was somewhat lower. Additionally, the specimens for tension stiffening effect were manufacured using OPC (Ordinary Portland Cement) and SFRC (Steel Fiber Reinforced Concrete), with dimensions of 150(W)×150(B)×1000(H) mm. The crack spacing of specimens was most significant for GFRP reinforcement bars, which have a lower elastic modulus and a smoother surface, while BFRP and CFRP bars, with somewhat rougher surfaces and higher elastic moduli, showed similar crack spacings. In the load-strain relationship, GFRP bars exhibited a relatively abrupt behavior after cracking, whereas BFRP and CFRP bars showed a more stable behavior after the cracking phase, maintaining a certain level of tension stiffening effect. The tension stiffening index was somewhat smaller as the diameter increased, and GFRP, compared to BFRP, showed a higher tension stiffening index.

  • The behavior of confined steel fiber-reinforced concrete (including confinement models) with compressive strengths ranging from normal to high strength is still rarely studied. This paper presents the results of an investigation of fifteen confined concrete cylinders containing steel fiber. The design parameters evaluated in the experiment included concrete compressive strength (covers normal to high strength), volume fraction of steel fiber and hoop spacing. The main objective of this study was to evaluate the behavior of confined steel fiber concrete by reviewing several design parameters, such as concrete strength (normal to high strength). It is then developed to be an analytical stress-strain expression for confined steel fiber concrete. The experimental program was carried out by making cylindrical specimens with a diameter of 100 mm and a height of 200 mm. The cylindrical test object is compressed in a monotonic uniaxial loading. Experimental results have shown steel fiber in concrete has an important role in increasing the compressive strength and strain of cylindrical concrete without steel fiber. In addition, the value of strength enhancement of confined concrete (K) along with increasing fiber fraction volume; which applies to normal to high-strength concrete. The value of K also increases if the compressive strength of the concrete tends to decrease and the spacing of the hoops is closer. The comparison of stress-strain behavior between the confined steel fiber concrete proposed by other researchers and the experimental results in general significantly different in post-peak response. The statistical analysis indicates that the value of Coefficient of Variation for the confinement model by Campione is the closest compared to other existing confinement models in predicting the values of K and Toughness Index. Furthermore, the analytic stress-strain expression of confined steel fiber concrete was developed by adopting and modifying several equations from the present models. The proposed analytical expression is then verified with the experimental results. The results of the verification show that the stress-strain behavior of confined steel fiber concrete is relatively close.

  • While analyzing traffic flow, speed, traffic volume, and density are important macroscopic indicators, and acceleration and spacing are the important microscopic indicators. The speed and traffic volume can be collected with the currently installed traffic information collection devices. However, acceleration and spacing data are necessary for safety and autonomous driving but cannot be collected using the current traffic information collection devices. 'You Look Only Once'(YOLO), an object recognition technique, has excellent accuracy and real-time performance and is used in various fields, including the transportation field. In this study, to measure acceleration and spacing using YOLO, we developed a model that measures acceleration and spacing through changes in vehicle speed at each interval and the differences in the travel time between vehicles by setting the measurement intervals closely. It was confirmed that the range of acceleration and spacing is different depending on the traffic characteristics of each point, and a comparative analysis was performed according to the reference distance and screen angle to secure the measurement rate. The measurement interval was 20m, and the closer the angle was to a right angle, the higher the measurement rate. These results will contribute to the analysis of safety by intersection and the domestic vehicle behavior model.

  • Recently a removable soil nail is demanded due to problems beyond of economical and engineering purpose. In this study removable soil nails are developed and field pull-out tests are carried out 16 times in order to analysis pull-out characteristics of the removable soil nail. For the spacing and the installed position of fixed socket, the length of the soil nail, and W/C ratio of cement grout in the removable soil nail, pull-out characteristics of pull-out tests are analyzed. From the pull-out characteristics of removable soil nails, it is found that the spacing of fixed socket and W/C ratio of cement grout are important design parameters.

  • Objectives of this study included design of head and evaluation of the pullout performance of the headed reinforcement that can be used to replace standard hooks in the building exterior beam-column joints. Results of 36 pullout tests are presented. Test variables included reinforcing bar diameters (16-25mm), embedment depth (6-7db), transverse reinforcement, and single-vs.-group pullout behavior. The square head designed had gross area of 4Ab and thickness of db. The headed reinforcement made of Dl6 bars developed pullout strengths close to the bar yield strength, but larger bars developed strengths smaller than the yield strengths. The pullout resistance increased with decreasing spacing of the transverse reinforcement. Use of column ties with 6.0-db spacing improved the pullout performance of the headed bars without causing difficulties in fabricating the specimens. The comparison of the pullout performances between the headed bars and the standard hooks revealed that strengths, stiffnesses, and ductile behaviors are about the same.

  • This paper contains experimental studies on the flexural cracking behabior of PPC one-way slabs. Three post tensioned bonded PPC slabs with the same prestressing ratio and ultimate moment strength were tested. Based upon test results, this paper also presents the crack width prediction formula PPC slab. According to the crack theory developed mainly in Europe, crack width formula is given as the product of crack spacing and mean steel strain after decompression. Aaaaverage crack spacing formula is composed of many factors mainly such as concrete cover, concrete effective area in tension, sum of reinforcing bars perimeters and mixed reinforcements. In particular, it is very important to specify the bond characteristics of mixed reinforcements, since bond characteristics of PC bars are different from those of non-tensioned deformed bars. For this reason, a reduced bond coefficients for PS bars is employed in this study.

  • In this paper, we have studied the bulging phenomenon of ink-jet printed silver lines. The used silver inks are DGP-40LT-15C and DGH-55HTG of Advanced Nano Product (ANP) Company. We investigated the behavior of bulging by changing the polarity of the inks, the surface energy of substrate and droplet spacing in printing. The contact angle of the polar inks increased much more sensitively than the nonpolar ink as the surface energy of the substrate increases. In the case of the nonpolar ink, the bulging phenomenon occurred seriously as the droplet spacing decreased at the constant surface energy.

  • The first part of this two-part paper discussed some basic considerations on bond strength and its effect on strain localization and plastic deformation capacity of cracked structural concrete, and analytically evaluated the impacts of the hardening behavior of reinforcing steel and concrete quality on the basis of the Tension Chord Model. This second part assesses the impacts of the most frequently encountered construction details of existing concrete structures which may not satisfy current design code requirements: bar ribbing, bar spacing, and concrete cover thickness. It further evaluates the impacts of the additional structure-specific features bar diameter and crack spacing. It concludes with some considerations on the application of the findings in practice and an outlook on future research needs.

  • Inner support regions of continuous steel and concrete composite bridge decks, transverse crackings are easely developed by tensile forces due to live loads and primary and secondary effects of concrete shrinkage. Since these cracks have an influence on the durability of bridge decks, crack width should be controlled within allowable limit values. Although crack width is a function of steel stress, bar diameter, bar spacing, etc, the current code for the amount of longitudinal reinforcements provides only one value of 2 percent of the concrete area. In order to investigate cracking bahaviors of composite girders with the variation of the longitudinal steel ratios, negative flexural tests are conducted on five composite girders and crack width and crack spacing are compared to ACI Code and Eurocode. Based on the test results, it is discussed the suitability of the current code for the longitudinal steel ratio.
