  • The purpose of this study is to understand the architectural space of Gwolnaegaksa (闕內各司), the Government office in the palace, in the early Joseon Dynasty. The Royal palace can be divided into three parts, political space for king, living space for king and his family and government office. So first, we should to understand the characteristics of each space in the Royal Palace. Up to now we have looked at the architectural space of Gwolnaegaksa in Gyeongbokgung (景福宮), one of the Royal Palace, the result of this study is as followings. There were not many Gwolnaegaksas in the early days in Gyeongbokgung. After King Sejong, some office buildings were established in that palace. King's closest guards, like as Seonjeonkwan (宣傳官), Gyumsabok (兼司僕), Naegeumwi (內禁衛) had been on duty in Sajeongjeon Haengrang (思政殿 行廊), a kind of servants' quarters. Bincheong (賓廳), a conference room of high-ranking government officials was situated in Geungjeon Haengrang (勤政殿 行廊). There were also barracks of other palace guards in Geungjeon Haengrang. Gyeongyeoncheong (經筵廳), a place to prepare and wait, was built separately from Geungjeon Haengrang Layout drawings of Gyeongbokgung painted since the 18th century were different from document in some parts. The arrangement of the Gwolnaegaksa was assumed like as the Fig. 9.

  • The purpose of this study was to provide visual evaluation data in a workstation space when different lighting types were applied. For the performance evaluation, Radiance program was used for simulations, and the mock-up room(15.0x11.6x3m) was used for the actual test. The results of this study were as follows; 1) When the inidirect lighting simulation data using Radiance was compared with the actual data in a small workstation space, there was a 6.5% difference. Therefore, Radiance program was proved to be useful for the evaluation of lighting performance. 2) Higher light levels (higher light ratio (%)) were recorded in the straddled layout and lower light levels (lower light ratio (%)) were recorded in the centered layout condition in most cases. 3) Also, the results show that the indirect luminaires and the straddled layouts provide higher uniformity, whereas the direct luminaires and the centered layouts have lower uniformity.

  • The purpose of this study is to find out the spatial characteristics of the multi-housing units in Seoul and Kyung-gi area since 2006. Literature review and content analysis were used for this study and 82units of the big size over $165m^2$ were analyzed to review such design characteristics as spatial composition, layout and linkage. Through this study, the following conclusions have been reached; 1) Most unit plans had 4LDK and 3bath types including family room as a public space. This results shows that family-room and bathroom has recently become more important than number of rooms in multi-housing units planning. 2) Diversity of plan figures such as mass-mixing, mass-separation and polygons(L, V-type)was showed in most unit plan, breaking from the standardized forms of box types. 3) Intermediated spaces such as foyers and halls in entrance zone were planned and sub-entrance into kitchen were planned for the various types of circulation and work-efficiency. Cases had private space separated from public space, the dispersion of rooms with the increase of connection by corridors, L-DK meaning the living room isolated from the dining and kitchen, partially located living room for a view in area distribution. The spatial planning of master-zone mostly consists of the types of two-rooms and an entry into a foyer(library, dress-powder room, bathroom and master bedroom). This study has a significant meaning on grasping current trend in Korean multi-housing and to provide information for future direction on housing-unit design.

  • Underground environmental infrastructure and energy production facilities, which are recognized as avoidable facilities such as landfills, are emerging as an important social issue due to urbanization and economic growth. In order to safely construct a large-scale plant facility in the underground space, it is necessary to increase the utilization of the limited space layout and minimize unnecessary columns. In this study, the plant modularization method(Pipe Rack Module) was reviewed to solve the problems of work constraints, assembly and demolition, process system interconnection, and maintenance that occur when plant facilities are underground. In addition, plant module analysis was performed by applying various load conditions (earthquake load, device load, earth pressure load, etc.) to improve spatial layout usability and secure structure stability. Based on the analysis results under various boundary condition, the implications regarding the minimum installation interval and module arrangement (draft) of basic modules required for the construction of an underground combined plant were derived.

  • In process plant construction, the implementation of design automation technologies is pivotal in reducing the timeframes associated with the design phase and in enabling the generation and evaluation of a variety of design alternatives, thereby facilitating the identification of optimal solutions. These technologies can play a crucial role in ensuring the successful delivery of projects. Previous research in the domain of design automation has primarily focused on parametric design in architectural contexts and on the automation of equipment layout and pipe routing within plant engineering, predominantly employing rule-based algorithms. Nevertheless, these studies are constrained by the limited flexibility of their models, which narrows the scope for generating alternative solutions and complicates the process of exploring comprehensive solutions using nonlinear optimization techniques as the number of design and engineering parameters increases. This research introduces a framework for automating plant design through the use of generative neural network models to overcome these challenges. The framework is applicable to the layout problems of process plants, covering the equipment necessary for production processes and the facilities for essential resources and their interconnections. The development of the proposed Neural-network (NN) based Generative Design Model unfolds in four stages: (a) Rule-based Model Development: This initial phase involves the development of rule-based models for layout generation and evaluation, where the generation model produces layouts based on predefined parameters, and the evaluation model assesses these layouts using various performance metrics. (b) Neural Network Model Development: This phase transitions towards neural network models, establishing a NN-based layout generation model utilizing Generative Adversarial Network (GAN)-based methods and a NN-based layout evaluation model. (c) Model Optimization: The third phase is dedicated to optimizing the models through Bayesian Optimization, aiming to extend the exploration space beyond the limitations of rule-based models. (d) Inverse Design Model Development: The concluding phase employs an inverse design method to merge the generative and evaluative networks, resulting in a model that outputs layout designs to meet specific performance objectives. This study aims to augment the efficiency and effectiveness of the design process in process plant construction, transcending the limitations of conventional rule-based approaches and contributing to the achievement of successful project outcomes.

  • Today the Seoul metro has become the most important public transportation since opening in 1974. However, planning and design of stations, transfer systems and facilities are discorded by different companies and subway lines. Therefore, there is lack of objective design guidelines to secure legibility and safety in subway space. In this context, we aim to investigate the objective design and planing guidelines in terms of people's cognition and space use pattern. Space syntax method which enables scientific analysis is utilized to examine spatial layout considering passenger's spatial behavior. The research resulted in providing objective design and planning standards.
