  • Recently, a score-penalty method has been used for the acoustic passive tracking of marine mammals. The interesting aspect of this technique lies in the loss function, which has a penalty term representing the mismatch between the measured signal and the modeled signal, while the traditional time-domain matched-field processing is positively considering the match between them. In this study, we apply the score-penalty method into the depth estimation of a passive target with a known source waveform. Assuming deep ocean environments with uncertainties in the sound speed profile, we evaluate the score-penalty method, comparing it with the time-domain matched field processing method. We shows that the score-penalty method is more accurate than the time-domain matched field processing method in the ocean environment with weak mismatch of sound speed profile, and has better efficiency. However, in the ocean enviroment with strong mismatch of the sound speed profile, the score-penalty method also fails in the depth estimation of a target, similar to the time-domain matched-field processing method.

  • This paper studies the instability between homopolar generator and constant power load with negative impedance characteristics, provides the design method of homopolar generator system which overcomes the instability. In case of magnitude and phase of impedance of source and load mismatch, control instability of source can occur. For the safety of phase of load impedance, the gain of P, I controller with sufficient phase margin is applied through analysis on the simulation model of generator system, and the gain limit of load impedance is ensured by limitation of the gain margin of generator system. The stability of power system can be increased by considering and analyzing the impedance of source and load.

  • This study presents a comparative thermodynamic analysis of subcritical and transcritical organic Rankine cycles for the recovery of low-temperature heat sources considering nine substances as the working fluids. The effects of the turbine inlet pressure, source temperature, and working fluid on system performance were all investigated with respect to metrics such as the temperature distribution of the fluids and pinch point in the heat exchanger, mass flow rate, and net power production, as well as the thermal efficiency. Results show that as the turbine inlet pressure increases from the subcritical to the supercritical range, the mismatch between hot and cold streams in the heat exchanger decreases, and the net power production and thermal efficiency increase; however, the turbine size per unit power production decreases.

  • Background and Objectives: In distracting listening conditions, individuals need to pay extra attention to selectively listen to the target sounds. To investigate the amount of listening effort required in reverberating and noisy backgrounds, a semantic mismatch was examined. Subjects and Methods: Electroencephalography was performed in 18 voluntary healthy participants using a 64-channel system to obtain N400 latencies. They were asked to listen to sounds and see letters in 2 reverberated×2 noisy paradigms (i.e., Q-0 ms, Q-2000 ms, 3 dB-0 ms, and 3 dB-2000 ms). With auditory-visual pairings, the participants were required to answer whether the auditory primes and letter targets did or did not match. Results: Q-0 ms revealed the shortest N400 latency, whereas the latency was significantly increased at 3 dB-2000 ms. Further, Q-2000 ms showed approximately a 47 ms delayed latency compared to 3 dB-0 ms. Interestingly, the presence of reverberation significantly increased N400 latencies. Under the distracting conditions, both noise and reverberation involved stronger frontal activation. Conclusions: The current distracting listening conditions could interrupt the semantic mismatch processing in the brain. The presence of reverberation, specifically a 2000 ms delay, necessitates additional mental effort, as evidenced in the delayed N400 latency and the involvement of the frontal sources in this study.

  • This paper suggests a new algorithm for detecting the plagiarism among a set of source codes, constrained to be functionally equivalent, such are submitted for a programming assignment or for a programming contest problem. The typical algorithms largely exploited up to now are based on Greedy-String Tiling, which seeks for a perfect match of substrings, and analysis of similarity between strings based on the local alignment of the two strings. This paper introduces a new method for detecting the similar interval of the given programs based on an adaptive similarity matrix, each entry of which is the logarithm of the probabilities of the keywords based on the frequencies of them in the given set of programs. We experimented this method using a set of programs submitted for more than 10 real programming contests. According to the experimental results, we can find several advantages of this method compared to the previous one which uses fixed similarity matrix(+1 for match, -1 for mismatch, -2 for gap) and also can find that the adaptive similarity matrix can be used for detecting various plagiarism cases.

  • This paper presents a robust and speed-sensorless stator flux estimation for induction motor direct torque control. The proposed observer is based on sliding mode approach. Stator electrical equations are used in the rotor orientation reference frame to eliminate the observer dependence on rotor speed. Lyapunov's concept for systems stability is adopted to confine the observer gain. Furthermore, the sensitivity of the observer to parameter mismatch is recovered with an adaptation technique. The nonlinearities of the pulse width modulation voltage source inverter are estimated and compensated to enhance stability at low speeds. Therefore, a new method based on the model reference adaptive system is proposed. Simulation and experimental results are shown to verify the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed algorithms.

  • The paper derives formulas for the mean-squared error distortion and resulting signal-to-noise (SNR) ratio of a fixed-rate scalar quantizer designed optimally in the minimum mean-squared error sense for a Gaussian density with the standard deviation ${\sigma}_q$ when it is mismatched to a Laplacian density with the standard deviation ${\sigma}_q$. The SNR formulas, based on the key parameter and Bennett's integral, are found accurate for a wide range of $p\({\equiv}\frac{\sigma_p}{\sigma_q}\){\geqq}0.25$. Also an upper bound to the SNR is derived, which becomes tighter with increasing rate R and indicates that the SNR behaves asymptotically as $\frac{20\sqrt{3{\ln}2}}{{\rho}{\ln}10}\;{\sqrt{R}}$ dB.

  • In this paper, the uncertainty in the calibration of coaxial thermal noise sources using a noise figure measuring (NFM) equipment is evaluated. Contributions to the uncertainty such as the calibration uncertainty of the standard noise source, mismatch, measurement of adapter efficiency, ambient temperature variation, and repeatability are evaluated in the frequency range of 10 MHz to 18 ㎓. Results show that the expanded uncertainty(k=2) is 0.23 ㏈ for the noise sources of 5 ㏈ and 15 ㏈ ENR, and 0.27 ㏈ for those of 21 ㏈.
