The use of pine bark, a natural adsorbent prepared from Korean Red Pine (Pinus densifloral), was studied for its adsorption behavior of lead ion from aqueous solution. Adsorption experiments were carried out on lead ion concentrations of 10mg/L. Adsorption of lead ion could be described by both Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption isotherms. Treatment of the bark with nitric acid greatly increased initial adsorption rate, and equilibrium sorption capacity increased by approximately 48%. A pseudo second-order kinetic model fitted well for the kinetic behavior of lead ion adsorption onto the bark. Acid-treated bark demonstrated its adsorption capacity quite close to that of granular activated carbon. Results of this study indicated that ion exchange and chelation were involved in the adsorption process.
The fate and behavior of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons(PAHs) and heavy metals in the environment are mainly controlled by their interactions with various components of soils and sediments. Due to their large surface area and abundance in many soils, smectites may greatly influence the fate and transport of the contaminants. In our experiment, PAH sorption by hexadecyltimethylammonium(HDTMA)-modified smectite linearly increased in proportion to the amount of HDTMA added on the clay. However, trimethylammonium(TMA)-modified smectite did not show superiority in its sorption of PAH compared with the HDTMA-smectite or dodecyltrimethylammonium(DTMA)- smectite. Meanwhile, the smectites modified with the same cationic surfactants adsorbed Cd$^{2+}$(heavy metal) significantly from water at low surfactant loading level, but the Cd$^{2+}$ adsorption linearly decreased as the loading of surfactant increased. The result shows that the sorption tendency of organoclays for organic or inorganic contaminants was significantly influenced by the amount and size of the surfactants added on the clay. This reveals that the stabilization and configuration of cationic surfactant formed on the clay interlayer of different sizes may be an important factor in controlling the sorptive capacity of each pollutant in the environment.
An alternative method to the empirical approach such as Langmuir and Freundlich model, surface complexation model using thermodynamic database is used to simulate adsorption behavior of cadmium for oxide minerals. Sorption of cadmium onto amorphous silica ($SiO_2$) and synthetic goethite (${\alpha}$-FeOOH) at various conditions of pH, initial cadmium loading, oxide concentration, and ionic strength, were investigated. For both oxide minerals, increasing cadmium concentration resulted in right shifting of the sorption curve of cadmium as the function of pH. The $pH_{50}$, where 50% of cadmium sorbed, of goethite (pH 5.25) was much smaller than that of the silica (pH 7.83). The sorption of cadmium onto both minerals were not affected by the background ion strength from $10^{-1}$ to $10^{-2}$ M of $KNO_3$. It indicated that the binding affinity of goethite surface for cadmium is much stronger than that of silica. The strong affinity of oxide mineral for cadmium can be explained by the existence of coordination or covalent bond between cadmium and surface of it.
Sorption and sequential desorption experiments were conducted for Zn using a natural soil (NS) in background status by aging (1, 30 and 100 days). The sorption isotherm showed that Zn had high sorption capacity but low sorption affinity in NS. Sequential desorption was biphasic with appreciable amount of sorbed Zn residing in the desorption-resistant fraction after several desorption steps. The biphasic desorption behavior of Zn was characterized by a biphasic desorption model that includes a linear term to represent labile or easily-desorbing fraction and a Langmuirian-type term to represent desorption-resistant fraction. The biphasic desorption model indicated that the size of the maximum capacity of desorption-resistant fraction ($q^{irr}_{max}$) increased with aging in NS. Desorption kinetics and desorption-resistance of Zn in the soils collected from mine tailings (MA, MB and MC collected from surface, subsurface soils and mine waste, respectively) were investigated and compared to the bioavailability to earthworm (Eisenia fetida). Desorption kinetic data of Zn were fitted to several desorption kinetic models. The ratio ($q_{e,d}/q_0$) of remaining Zn at desorption equilibrium ($q_{e,d}$) to initial sorbed concentration ($q_0$) was in the range of 0.53~0.90 in the mine tailings which was higher than that in NS, except MA. The sequential desorption from the mine tailings with 0.01M Na$NO_3$ and 0.01M $CaCl_2$ showed that appreciable amounts of Zn are resistant to desorption due to aging or sequestration. The SM&T (Standard Measurements and Testing Programme of European Union) analysis showed that the sum of oxidizable (Step III) and residual (Step IV) fractions of Zn was linearly related with its desorption-resistance ($q^{irr}_{max}$) determined by the sequential desorption with 0.01M Na$NO_3$ ($R^2$= 0.9998) and 0.01M $CaCl_2$ ($R^2$= 0.8580). The earthworm uptake of Zn and the desorbed amount of Zn ($q_{desorbed}$ = $q_0-q_{e,d}$) in MB soil were also linearly related ($R^2$ = 0.899). Our results implicate that the ecological risk assessment of heavy metals would be possible considering the relation between desorption behaviors and bioavailability to earthworm.
In order to apply eco-friendly poly(propylene carbonate) (PPC) into barrier packaging materials, six different PPC/exfoliated graphite (EFG) nanocomposite films with different EFG were successfully prepared by a solution blending method. Their water sorption behavior was gravimetrically investigated as a function of the EFG content and interpreted with respect to their chemical structure and morphology. The water sorption isotherms were reasonably well fitted by Fickian diffusion model, regardless of morphological heterogeneities. With increasing the EFG content, the diffusion coefficient and water uptake decreased from $12.5{\times}10^{-10}cm^2sec^{-1}$ to $7.2{\times}10^{-10}cm^2sec^{-1}$ and from 8.9 wt% to 4.2 wt%, respectively, which indicates that the moisture resistance capacity of PPC was greatly enhanced by incorporating EFG into PPC. The enhanced water barrier property of the PPC/EFG nanocomposite films with the high aspect ratio EFG makes them potential candidates for versatile packaging applications. However, to maximize the performance of the nanocomposite films, further researches are required to increase the compatibility of EFG in the PPC matrix.
A laboratory experiment was carried out to investigate the effects of the additions of lime soluble starch on the behavior of silica in submerged soil. 1. Available silica in the submerged soil was increased as pH come up to neutral condition and Eh decreased. 2. Application of soluble starch accelerating the soil reduction nearly doubled the amount of silica sorbed in soil from silica solution. 3. Silica sorption of soil treated with slaked lime was increased to some extent in the low silica solution but was not showed that constancy in high silica solution. 4. The reaction between amount of silica sorbed in soil and silica concentration in solution followed not Lamgmuir but Freundlich adsorption isotherm.
This study was undertaken to investigate the variation of equilibrium moisture content (EMC) in transverse direction and three different directional (longitudinal, radial, and tangential) linear movements, and diffusion coefficients within a tree disc of Korean red pine (pinus densiflora). The EMC gradually increased in heartwood from pith. Therefore, the chemical components might differ even in heartwood and the radial variation in EMC might have a close relationship with the cellulose content within a cross section. The specific gravity increases gradually from pith and the porosity has not direct influence on the variation of EMC within a tree disk. Both the radial and tangential diffusion coefficients exhibited clear trend of increase from pith. The EMC change (${\Delta}EMC$) and tangential diffusion coefficient were close to be axisymmetrical but others were deviated from axisymmetry. The diffusion coefficient decreases with decreasing an activation energy and specific gravity, The diffusion coefficient increased with increasing ${\Delta}EMC$ and hygroscopicity of wood might be inversely proportional to the activation energy, The fJEMC may depend on the chemical constituents of cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin. As the number of sorption sites and sorption capacity of wood increase, therefore, it might be assumed that the hygroscopicity of wood increases while activation energy decreases. Modeling physico-mechanical behavior of wood, the variations should be considered to improve the accuracy.
To understand the behavior of migration of contaminants in a fractured porous medium is a key to assure the overall safety of a potential radwaste repository. The feasible retention mechanism of contaminant transport in a tinctured medium are sorption of contaminants on solid surface and matrix diffusion of contaminants from a fracture into an adjacent porous medium. The acceleration mechanisms are the migration of contaminants in the form of pseudo-colloids and the limit of a volume f3r matrix diffusion. In this paper, the effects of these two acceleration mechanisms are studied mathematically, then semi-analytically computed by the application of the Talbot theorem and verified. Results indicate that the acceleration processes cannot be neglected in the modeling of contaminant transport in a fractured porous medium.
Swelling of starch granules by water-sorption causes a progressive or sometimes abrupt change in sorption behavior as a result of structural alterations and the possible exposure of new sites with high affinity for water. It is thus of interest to examine the time-dependent change in the size or shape of the starch granules. Gravitational field-flow fractionation (GrFFF) utilizes the earth's gravity as the external field, and is useful for separation of micron-sized particles with larger particles eluting earlier than smaller ones. In this study, GrFFF was used to monitor the swelling of two starch granules, potato starch and sweet potato starch during contact time of 11-12 days at room temperature in water. Results from GrFFF were compared with those obtained from optical microscope (OM). For both starch granules, the mean sizes were increased with time spent in water.
Polydimethylsiloxane(PDMS) containing [N, N'-bis (3- (salicylidene amino) propyl) amine Co(II)] (Co(saldpt)) as a fixed oxygen carrier was synthesized. UV-visible spectra of the membrane demonstrated that Co(saldpt) binded molecular oxygen specificaaly and reversibly. From time lag method experiment, it was found that both oxygen permeability and diffusibity increase with decreasing upstream pressure, while solubility maintain nearly constant. The maximum oxygen permeability and oxygen selectivity over nitrogen obtained was 18.6 barrer and 4, respectively, at 25 mmHg and $40^{\circ}C$ from the the PDMS membrane containing 1 wt% of Co(saldpt). Facilitation behavior was explained in terms of the dual sorption model.
