Characteristics of sorption and desorption in soils affect chemical fate, soil-remediation time, and selection of remediation technology. The sorption and desorption behavior of atrazine and naphthalene on soils was studied. Six soils collected at Gwangju area were used as sorbents and the organic matter contents ranged from 1.28 to 5.21%. Sorption and desorption experiments were conducted and sorption distribution coefficients(Kd) of atrazine and naphthalene were nearly linear$(R^2=0.93{\sim}0.97)$. Desorption parameters were evaluated using three site desorption model included equilibrium, nonequilibrium and nondesorption sites. Non-desorbable site fraction for atrazine was evaluated, but for naphthalene it was not enumerated during the experimental period. Through the series dilution desorption experiments, non-desorpbable sites were observed for both chemicals.
The effect of propylene oxide, butylene oxide, furan resin, and vinylpyrrolidinone in controlling wood dimensional stability have been examined. Wood in the green or ovendry condition was treated with various chemical treatments using a vacuum-pressure procedure, and treated specimens were tested for tangential sweelling, moisture gain, and changes in sorption hysteresis. Results' indicate that propylene oxide, and butylene oxide enhanced with the crosslin king agent trimethylol propane trimethacrylate and applied to ovendry wood were the most efficient chemical treatments in controlling tangential sweeling caused by liquid water or water vapor, and in reducing water vapor adsorption. The sorption behavior of treated wood as depicted by the ratios of sorption was "very favorable" in most instances. In the particular case of furan resin treatments, ratios of sorption were improved from 25 to 100 percent as compared to those of untreated wood.
Poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA) membranes crosslinked with poly (styrene-co-maleic anhydride) (PSMAn) have been prepared by the solution method. To investigate the separation behavior of the crosslinked PVA/PSMAn membranes in the pervaporation process, the selective sorption experiment and swelling measurements of the membranes in ethanol-water mixtures of 30~90 wt % ethanol contents were conducted with equipment that was able to measure the concentration and amount of the liquid absorbed in the membranes. The membranes prepared in this study exhibited good selectivity toward water component in sorption and permeation. Also, in the feed containing ethanol more than 50 wt %, the permeation selectivity of the membrane showed better correlation with the sorption selectivity than that with the swelling ratio changing toward the crosslinking content. This behavior was consistence with a solution-diffusion model correlating permeation and sorption selectivity, and led to the conclusion that the permeation selectivity was determined by sorption step rather than by diffusion step in the membrane.
Rare earth elements(REEs) have been used as an useful tool in understanding the various geological processes such as evolution and differentiation in the crust. The REEs also have been used as an analog of actinides for radioactive wastes at the water-rock interactions. Using physicochemical properties of the REEs and actinides, we have shown that Eu is an optimum analogue for understanding the behavior of Am in subsurface environments. Factors affecting sorption behavior of radioactive nuclides in groundwater were investigated by batch experiments. Four nuclides such as $^{241}Am,\;^{152}Eu,\;^{160}Tb\;and\;^{60}Co$ were selected to test our hypothesis, and $^{160}Tb$ and $^{60}Co$ were specifically used to compare to the sorption behavior between $^{241}Am-^{152}Eu$ and other radioactive nuclides. Four different rock samples and one groundwater were used in the batch experiments where solution pH for all experiments was fixed at 5.5. Our results demonstrate that $^{241}Am,\;^{152}Eu,\;and\;^{160}Tb$ show similar sorption behavior whereas $^{60}Co$ is different in sorption behavior at the mineral-water interface, suggesting that the sorption behavior of $^{60}Co$ is affected by different rock types. Our results also show that 1) Eu in REEs is optimum analogue of fate and transport of Am in subsurface environments, and 2) mineral compositions such as $SiO_2,\;TiO_2,\;P_2O_5$ and distribution of REEs such as Eu anomaly play key roles in affecting sorption behavior of radioactive nuclides even though physicochemical properties of geological materials such as specific surface area and cation exchange capacity can not be ruled out.
Split-type nylon/polyester microfiber and polyester microfiber fabrics possess drapeability, softness, bulkiness, and smoothness, so that they can be applied in various industrial fields. In particular, these fabrics are able to absorb various organic solvents, and can be used as clean room materials. To investigate the chemical affinity between solvents and the compositional materials of these fabrics, the contact angle of thermally pressed film fabrics was measured with different solvents. The thermally pressed nylon/polyester fabric films showed a chemical attraction to formamide. The sorption properties of the microfiber fabrics were investigated using a real time testing device, and these tests showed that the sorption behavior was more influenced by the structure of the fibrous assembly than by any chemical attraction. The effect of the fabric density, specific weight, and sample structure on the sorption capacity and rate was examined for various organic solvents. The sorption capacity was influenced by the density and the specific weight of the fibrous assembly, and knitted fabric showed a higher sorption capacity than woven fabric. However, the sorption rate was less affected in lower viscosity solvents. On applying Poiseuille's Law, the lower viscosity solvents showed higher initial sorption rates, and more easily penetrated into the fibrous assembly.

Removal characteristics of Mn and Co was studied from the contaminated solutions via surface reaction with various calcium carbonate (calcite). Synthetic calcium carbonates which has different surface morphology as well as surface areas were prepared by a spontaneous precipitation method and used. Mn and Co removal behavior by the different solid surface demonstrate characteristic sorption behaviors depend on the type of calcite used, such as surface area or surface morphology. Calcium carbonate crystals (mostly calcite) which exhibit complicated surface morphology (c-type) shows strong sorption affinity for Mn and Co removal via sorption than on the a-type or b-type calcite crystals of less complicated surfaces. The applicability of two kinetic models, the pseudo-first-order kinetic equation and the Elovich kinetic model was examined on these sorption behavior. Elovich kinetic model was found more suitable to explain the very early stage adsorption kinetics, while the pseudo-first-order kinetic equation was successfully fitted for the adsorption kinetics after 50 hours.

An experiment for uranium sorption onto fresh and weathered biotites was performed. After centrifugation, concentrations of uranium in the supernatants were analyzed using ICP-MS, and biotite samples were investigated using XRD and SEM. With powdered biotites (<3 mm in size), we have conducted uranium sorption experiments about fresh and weathered biotites to obtain uranium sorption amounts in various pH conditions. The uranium sorption was not high at a low pH (e.g., pH 3), but increased with increasing pH. There were lower uranium sorption by the weathered biotites than by the fresh ones, and the difference was much larger at higher pH (e.g., pH 11). The lower sorption values of uranium by the weathered biotites may be caused by a change of mineral surfaces and a chemical behavior of surrounding dissolved elements. It seems that the uranium-mineral interaction has been diminished, especially, in the weathered biotite by a destruction and dissolution of preferential sorption sites on the mineral surfaces and by the colloidal formation from dissolved elements.
We synthesized lithium zirconate using solid-state reaction and analyzed thermal properties (TG/DTA) of starting materials and the synthesized one. When $Li_2ZrO_3$ powder was exposed to $CO_2$ environment at $500^{\circ}C$, 93% of the theoretical absorption weight was gained within 280 min with fairly high sorption rate. Almost all the absorbed $CO_2$ was generated by heating the sample to $800^{\circ}C$. We also investigated densification behavior of $Li_2ZrO_3$ under $CO_2$ environment. By sintering $Li_2ZrO_3$ at $760^{\circ}C$ using 2-step process, we obtained dense product, composed mainly of $Li_2ZrO_3\;and\;ZrO_2$, with relative density of 92%.

An experimental study on the sorption of U(VI) onto a Korean granite was performed as a function of the geochemical parameters such as contact time, pH, ionic strength, and carbonate concentration using a batch procedure. The distribution coefficient,$K_d$, was about 1-200 mL/g depending on the experimental conditions. The sorption of U(VI) onto granite particles was greatly dependent upon the contact time, pH, and carbonate concentration, but insignificantly dependent on the ionic strength. It was noticed that the sorption of U(VI) onto granite particles was highly correlated with the uranium speciation in the solution, which was dependent on the pH and carbonate concentrations. It was deduced from the kinetic sorption experiment that a two-step first-order kinetic behavior could dominate the kinetic sorption of U(VI) onto granite particles. In the alkaline range of a pH above 7, U(VI) sorption was greatly decreased and this might be due to the formation of anionic U(VI)-carbonate aqueous complexes as predicted by the speciation calculations.
The sorption of Cd$^{2+}$ on calcite was studied in aqueous solutions of several electrolytes. The Cd$^{2+}$ concentration, 10$^{-8}$ M, was kept well below saturation with respect to CdCO$_3$(s). Sorption behavior of Cd$^{2+}$ in different ionic strengths of NaClO$_4$solutions shows that sorption is independent of ionic strength. This result suggests that Cd$^{2+}$ sorption on calcite surface is of a specific nature, and adsorption is controlled by an inner-sphere type of surface complex. Two stages in the sorption behavior could be identified: an initial rapid uptake, followed by slower uptake reaching a maximum steady state by 145 hrs. No evidence was observed for surface precipitation, although it can not be entirely ruled out. Desorption of Cd$^{2+}$ from the calcite surface after resuspension into Cd-free solution is initially very rapid, but depends partly on the previous sorption history. Desorption behavior of Cd$^{2+}$ show that an initial rapid desorption followed either by slow uptake reaching a maximum, as in the adsorption experiments, or slowing desorption to reach a steady state minimum. This irreversible behavior of Cd$^{2+}$ sorption and desorption may act as one of the controls for regulating the mobility of dissolved Cd$^{2+}$ natural aqueous systems. Calculated adsorption partition coefficients suggest that overall sorption and desorption process in the concentration range are controlled by d single mechanism.ingle mechanism.
