  • Acid deposition in forest adjacent to the industrial complexes causes soil acidification resulting in the leaching of cations, decreases of buffering capacity and increases of toxic metal concentrations such as Al, Fe, Mn and Cu in soil solution. Changes of nutrient availability equilibria by acid deposition have been known to retard the growth of pine trees. Objective of this research was to assess the critical ratios of Ca/Al and Mg/Al limiting the growth of Pinus thunbergii in the hydroponic culture. The Ca concentration and Ca/Al ratio in stalks of pine tree were increased as increasing Ca/Al molar ratio in the nutrient solution, but were not changed when the Ca/Al molar ratio was adjusted to greater than 1. Growth of Pinus thunbergii was inhibited at the Ca/Al molar ratio lower than l due to the Ca deficiency. The molar ratios of Ca/Al in the needles of Pinus thunbergii showed the similar tendency with the stalks. This indicated that Ca/Al molar ratio of 1 in the growth media was the critical level limiting the growth of Pinus thunbergii. Concentration of Mg and Mg/Al molar ratios in the stalks of pine tree were increased as increasing Mg/Al molar ratio in nutrient solution. Molar ratios of Mg/Al in the needles were increased as increasing Mg/Al ratios in nutrient solution up to 0.83, which was the critical level limiting the growth of Pinus thunbergii.

  • The growth of Sal. choleraesuis and its kunzendorf variety in tetrathionate broth containing various amounts of iodine solution was studied and compared with that of Sal. typhi, Sal. typhimurium and E. coli. The results obtained were as followings. 1. When 2.0 ml of iodine solution, normal amount, was added to 100 ml of tetrathionate broth base, the number of Sal. choleraesuis decreased rapidly until 24 hours after inoculation and slightly increased 48 hours after inoculation. The numbers of Sal. choleraesuis var. kunzendorf and E. coli decreased rapidly and none of the organisms recovered 24 and 48 hours after inoculation, respectively. The growth of Sal. typhi and Sal. typhimurium, however, was not inhibited at all. 2. When 4.0 ml of iodine solution was added, to 100 ml of tetrathionate broth base, the growth of all the organisms was inhibited, among which Sal. choleraesuis, Sal. choleraesuis var. kunzendorf, and E. coli were not recovered 24 and 48 hours after inoculation. 3. When reduced amounts of iodine solution, 1.0 ml and 0.5 ml, were added to 100 ml of tetrathionate broth base, the growth of all the organisms was not inhibited.

  • The hydrothermal growth of $GaPO_{4}$ Single Crystals was carried out by the horizontal temperature gradient method. The most promising solvents for the crystal growth of $GaPO_{4}$ are $H_{3}PO_{4}$ and HCl solutions. Single crystals have been hydothermally grown at temperatures over the range $210-290^{\circ}C$ in these solutions with seed crystals. The glowth rates in HCl solution were higher than that for comparable conditions in $H_{3}PO_{4}$ solution. Morphologies of crystals grown at temperatures below $200^{\circ}C$ tended to be bounded by small major rhombohedral(10$\bar{1}$1) faces. In the temperature range from 200 to $430^{\circ}C$, the single crystals have morphologies bounded by prism (10$\bar{1}$0), small major rhombohedral(10$\bar{1}$1) and minor rhombohedral(01$\bar{1}$1) faces at the early stage, and grew with well developed basal(0001) faces by increasing the growth temperature.

  • The reproducibility of successive growth of Bi12TiO20(BTO) single crystals using a top-seeded solution growth (TSSG) pulling method was evaluated by measuring the lattice constants and their standard deviations. A substantial phase diagram in the region close to the stoichiometric BTO was established experimentally for this purpose, and the existence of a retrograde solid solution close to a BTO was clarified. It was emphasize that a starting solution, with a 10.0~10.1 mol% TiO2 concentration, results in large single crystals with a highly homogeneous lattice constant of within $\pm$1x10-4$\AA$, when the solidified fraction of the grown crystal is less than about 45%. A wavelength dispersion of refractive index was measured for the first time, an it was verified that the refractive index of BTO is larger than that of BSO(Bi12TiO20), allowing the voltage sensitivity of EOS higher than the case with BSO as a probe head.

  • To examine aluminum toxicity on woody plants, Forsythia koreana cuttings were grown in the aluminum solution and ground water(pH 6.75). Aluminum solution were prepared 1.0, 2.5 and 5.0mM aluminum potassium sulfate, dilulted with ground water. Shoot growth, leaf number, leaf injury and leaf chlorophyll content were measured and compared among the treatments. In all growth-related characters(shoot growth. leaf number, leaf injury and leaf chlorophyll content), differences among the treatments were highly significant. Forsythia koreana cuttings were severely stressed in aluminum solution more than 1.0mM concentration.

  • In order to investigate the corrosion pit occurrence and growth characteristic of M.E.F.(martensite encapsulated islands of ferrite) dual phase steel was made with a suitable heat treatment of raw material(SS41), a corrosion fatigue test was performed under rotary bending in the salt solution having a concentration from 0.01 wt percent to 3.5 wt percent. The fatigue strength of dual phase steel was remarkably decreased with an increase in concentration of salt solution; approximately from 63% to 80% in case of dual phase steel and from 40% to 71% in case of raw material. Corrosion pit occurred in the martensite phase and fatigue cracks from corrosion pits were selectively propagated in martensite phases. In the observation of corrosion pits at the origin of fatigue cracks, it had been found that corrosion pits were grown into hemispherical pits and a/c(the surface diameter, 2c and the depth, a of corrosion pit)was about 1.0-1.5regardless of the variation of salt solution concentration. The difference of corrosion pit depth growth rate was increased with an increase in concentration of salt solution according to an increase in stress level.

  • The effects of sucrose solution on cell growth and berberine production were studied in Thalictrum rugosum cell cultures. Application of sucrose solution without any other components enhanced berberine accumulation significantly in spite of slower cell growth. At high sucrose concentration, cells became very compact and fourfold increase in specific berberine content was achieved. Optimum concentration of sucrose in plain water to maximize the productivity was found to be 8%. Time course experiment in 8% sucrose solution showed that more than 5 days were required to utilize the advantage of this system efficiently. Addition of vitamins, growth regulators, and inorganic salts into the solution was not effective in increasing berberine productivity.
