The property improvement of polycarbonate coated with a multilayer film composed of an inorganic $SiO_2$ film and a photocatalytic $TiO_2$ film was studied. The $SiO_2$ film as a binder had an excellent light transmission characteristic. After the treatment with atmospheric pressure plasma, the surface of $SiO_2$ film showed the hydrophilicity, which increased the film coating uniformity with a $TiO_2$-containing aqueous solution. When $TiO_2$ film was over 200 nm thick, the absorption effect of UV rays in the range of 180~400 nm suppressed the yellowing phenomena of polycarbonate substrate. The inorganic film improved the heat resistance of polycarbonate substrates. $TiO_2$ film in the outmost under the exposure of UV rays promotes the catalytic oxidation characteristics and yields the capability to the decomposition of organic contaminants, and also increases the self-cleaning properties due to the increase of hydrophilicity. Structural stability of the polycarbonate substrate coated with inorganic $TiO_2$ and $SiO_2$ film was shown. The role of $SiO_2$ film between $TiO_2$ and polycarbonate substrate suppressed the peeling of $TiO_2$ film by inhibiting the photocatalytic oxidation effect of $TiO_2$ film on the polycarbonate substrate.
Adsorption characteristics of reactive red 120 (RR 120) dye by a coal-based granular activated carbon (CGAC) from an aqueous solution were investigated using the amount of activated carbon, pH, initial concentration, contact time and temperature as adsorption variables. Isotherm equilibrium relationship showed that Langmuir's equation fits better than that of Freundlich's equation. The adsorption mechanism was considered to be superior to the adsorption of monolayer with uniform energy distribution. From the evaluated Langmuir separation coefficients (RL = 0.181~0.644), it was found that this adsorption process belongs to an effective treatment area (RL = 0~1). The adsorption energy determined by Temkin's equation and Dubinin-Radushkevich's equation was E = 15.31~7.12 J/mol and B = 0.223~0.365 kJ/mol, respectively. The adsorption process showed the physical adsorption (E < 20 J/mol and B < 8 kJ/mol). The adsorption kinetics followed the pseudo first order model. The adsorption reaction of RR 120 dye on CGAC was found to increase spontaneously with increasing the temperature because the free energy change decreased with increasing the temperature. The enthalpy change (12.747 kJ/mol) indicated an endothermic reaction. The isosteric heat of adsorption (△Hx = 9.78~24.21 kJ/mol) for the adsorption reaction of RR 120 by CGAC was revealed to be the physical adsorption (△Hx < 80 kJ/mol).
Characteristics of adsorption equilibrium, kinetic and thermodynamic of aniline blue onto activated carbon from aqueous solution were investigated as function of initial concentration, contact time and temperature. Adsorption isotherm of aniline blue was analyzed by Langmuir, Freundlich, Redlich-Peterson, Temkin and Dubinin-Radushkevich models. Langmuir isotherm model fit better with isothermal data than other isotherm models. Estmated Langmuir separation factors ($R_L=0.036{\sim}0.068$) indicated that adsorption process of aniline blue by activated carbon could be an effective treatment method. Adsorption kinetic data were fitted to pseudo first order model, pseudo second order model and intraparticle diffusion models. The kinetic results showed that the adsorption of aniline blue onto activated carbon well followed pseudo second-order model. Adsorption mechanism was evaluated in two steps, film diffusion and intraparticle diffusion, by intraparticle diffusion model. Thermodynamic parameters such as Gibbs free energy, enthalpy and entropy for adsorption process were estimated. Enthalpy change (48.49 kJ/mol) indicated that this adsorption process was physical adsorption and endothermic. Since Gibbs free energy decreased with increasing temperature, the adsorption reaction became more spontaneously with increasing temperature. The isosteric heat of adsorption indicated that there is interaction between the adsorbent and the adsorbate because the energy heterogeneity of the adsorbent surface.
The effect of physical and chemical treatments to reduce staphylococcal phages was investigated. To determine impact of physical treatment on viability of phages, two staphylococcal phages (SAP84 and SAP89) were treated with multiple heat ($55^{\circ}C$ and $60^{\circ}C$) and pH (pH4, 7, 10) conditions. Viability of SAP 84 was dramatically reduced at 60C and SAP 89 was completely inactivated at 60C within 25 min. Overall, the two phages were stable under all the pH conditions tested except for the SAP 89 at pH 10. Treatments, a 10% FAS (Ferrous Ammonium Sulfate) solution and various density of ethanol and sodium hypochlorite were used to reduce the two phages. SAP 84 was unstable in 50% and 70% ethanol. However, SAP 84 and SAP 89 showed high tolerance after exposure to 100 ppm of sodium hypochlorite which is known as an effective sterilizer. As soon as the two phages were treated with 10% FAS, which is used as a virucidal agent, they were inactivated and did not form any plaque. The result of this study provides additional evidence that staphylococcal phages can be controlled by various physicochemical treatments.

Hydroxyapatite (HAp) was synthesized from calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)2) reacting with phosphoric acid (H3PO4) in aqueous solution. HAp powders were synthesized from extremely high concentration of precursor solutions over 3 M of Ca(OH)2 aqueous suspension using modified process parameters such as phosphoric acid (H3PO4) pouring rate, aging time and post ball milling process. Regardless of phosphoric acid pouring rate, the DCPD (dicalcium phosphate dihydrate) was formed at room temperature and when heated above 700℃, β-TCP (tricalcium phosphate) was synthesized and the amount reached its maximum at 900℃. When the synthesized powder was sintered at 1150℃, β-TCP, a high temperature impurity phase, remained. The single HAp phase without DCPD was obtained from post ball-milled precipitates followed by 3 day aging. For the ball-milled precipitates even without the aging process, the desired single HAp phase without β-TCP could be obtained by heat treatment above 500℃. The post ball milling process provided a convenient route for HAp synthesis.
Oxalic acid has been traditionally obtained via the oxidation of carbohydrates using nitric acid and catalysts. However, this process produces a variety of nitrogen oxides during oxidation and requires a separation process due to its various intermediates. These products and additional steps increase the harmfulness and complexity of the process. Recently, the electrochemical reduction of carbon dioxide into oxalic acid has been suggested as an environmentally friendly and efficient technology for the production of oxalic acid. In this electrochemical conversion system, zinc oxalate (ZnC2O4) is obtained by the reaction of Zn2+ ions produced by Zn oxidation and oxalate ions produced by CO2 reduction. ZnC2O4 can then be converted to form oxalic acid, but this requires the use of a strong acid and heat. In this study, a system was proposed that can easily convert ZnC2O4 to oxalic acid without the use of a strong acid while also allowing for easy separation. In addition, this proposed system can also further convert the products into glycolic acid which is a high-value-added chemical. ZnC2O4 was effectively separated into Zn(OH)2 powder and oxalate solution through a chemical treatment and a vacuum filtration process. Then the Zn(OH)2 and oxalate were electrochemically converted to zinc and glycolic acid, respectively.

The glass ceramic secondary resource containing Li-Al-Si is used in inductor, fireproof glass, and transparent cookware and accounts for 14% of the total consumption of Li, which is the second most widely used after Li-ion batteries. Therefore, new Li resources should be explored when the demand for Li is exploding, and extensive research on Li recovery is needed. Herein, we recovered Li from fireproof Li-Al-Si glass ceramic, which is a new secondary resource containing Li. The fireproof glass among all Li-Al-Si glass ceramics was used as raw material that contained 1.5% Li, 9.4% Al, and 28.9% Si. The process for recovering Li from the fireproof glass was divided into two parts: (1) calcium salt roasting and (2) water leaching. In calcium salt roasting, a sample of fireproof glass was crushed and ground below 325 mesh. The leaching efficiency was compared based on the presence or absence of heat treatment of the fireproof glass. Moreover, the leaching rates based on the input ratios of calcium salt, Li-Al-Si glass, and ceramics and the leaching process based on calcium salt roasting temperatures were compared. In water leaching, the leaching and recovery rates of Li based on different temperatures, times, solid-liquid ratios, and number of continuous leaching stages were compared. The results revealed that fireproof glass ceramics containing Li-Al-Si should be heat treated to change phase to beta-type spodumene. CaCO3 salt should be added at a ratio of 6:1 with glass ceramics containing Li-Al-Si, and then leached 4 times or more to achieve a recovery efficiency of Li over 98% from a solution containing 200 mg/L of Li.

In this study, the production potential of alternative coagulant ($Al_2(SO_4)_3$ solution) having the identical coagulation activity with respect to the commercial coagulant was investigated. The raw material of alternative coagulant was a spent catalyst including aluminium (waste activated alumina) generated in the manufacturing process of the polymer. The alternative coagulant was produced through a series of processes: 1) intense heat and grinding, 2) chemical polymerization and substitution with $H_2SO_4$ solution, 3) dissolution and dilution and 4) settling and separation. To determine the optimal operating conditions in the lab-scale autoclave and dissolver, the content of $Al_2O_3$ in alternative coagulant was analyzed according to changes of the purity of sulfuric acid, reaction temperature, injection ratio of sulfuric acid and water in the dissolver. The results showed that the alternative coagulant having the $Al_2O_3$ content of 7~8% was produced under the optimal conditions such as $H_2SO_4$ purity of 50%, reaction temperature of $120^{\circ}C$, injection ratio of $H_2SO_4$ of 5 times and injection ratio of water of 2.3 times in dissolver. In order to evaluate the coagulation activity of the alternative coagulant, the Jar-test was conducted to the effluent in aerobic reactor. As a result, in both cases of Al/P mole of 1.5 and 2.0, the coagulation activity of the alternative coagulant was higher than that of the existing commercial coagulant. When the production costs were compared between the alternative and commercial coagulant through economic analysis, the production cost reduction of about 50% was available in the case of the alternative coagulant. In addition, it was identified that the alternative coagulant could be applied at field wastewater treatment plant without environmental problem through ecological toxicity testing.
The characteristics of the three alkaline proteinases, Enz. A, B and C, from the pyloric caeca of mackerel have been investigated. The optimum condition for the activity of the Enz. A, B and C was pH 9.4, 9.8 and 9.8 at $45^{\circ}C$ for $2\%$ casein solution, and was pH 9.2 10.2 and 9.8 at $45^{\circ}C$ for $5\%$ hemoglobin denatured by urea, respectively. Enz. A, B and C by heat treatment at $50^{\circ}C$ for 5 min were inactivated 90, 33 and $37\%$, respectively, over the original activity. The reaction rate of the three alkaline proteinases was constant to the reaction time to 40 min in the reaction condition of $2{\mu}g/ml$ of enzyme concentration and $2\%$ casein solution. The reaction rate equation and Km value against casein substrate determined by the method of Lineweaver and Burk were: Enz. A, Y=3.6X and $Km=5.0{\times}10^{-3}\%$; Enz. B, Y=6.0X and $Km=1.0{\times}10^{-3}\%$; Enz. C, Y=4.2X and $Km=3.6{\times}10^{-3}\%$. The three alkaline proteinases were inactivated by $Ag^+$ and $Hg^{2+}$, but activated by $Mn^{2+},\;Sn^{2+}\;and\;Pb^{2+}$, Enz. B and C were remarkably inhibited by the soybean trypsin inhibitor. Molecular weight of Enz. A, B and C determined by SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and Sephadex G-100 gel filtration was in the range of $27,500{\pm}2,500,\;20,500{\pm}1,500\;and\;15,250{\pm}250$, respectively.

In order to utilize dolomite as a calcium/magnesium compound material, it was prepared highly reactive calcined dolomite(CaO·MgO) using a microwave kiln (950 ℃, 60 min). The experiment was performed according to the standard of the hydration test (ASTM C 110) and hydration reactivity was analyzed as medium reactivity (max 74.1 ℃, 5 min). Experiments were performed with calcined dolomite and salt (MgCl2·6H2O) (a) 1:1, (b) 1:1.5, and (c) 1:2 wt% based on the hydration reaction of calcined dolomite. The result of X-ray diffraction analysis confirmed that MgO of calcined dolomite increased to Mg(OH)2 as the salt addition ratio increased. After the separating reaction, calcium was stirred at 80 ℃, 24 hr that produced CaCl2 of white crystal. XRD results, it was confirmed calcium chloride hydrate (CaCl2·(H2O)x) and CaO of calcined dolomite and salt additional reaction was separated into CaCl2. And it was synthesized with Ca(OH)2 99 wt% by NaOH adding reaction to the CaCl2 solution, and the synthesized Ca(OH)2 was manufactured CaO through the heat treatment process. In order to prepare calcium carbonate, CaCO3 was synthesized by adding Na2CO3 to CaCl2 solution, and the shape was analyzed in cubic form with a purity of 99 wt%.
