The common-rail fuel injection system is becoming a common technology for High Speed Direct Injection(HSDI) diesel engines. The injection timing and rate are important factors for combustion control and pollutants formation mechanisms during engine operation. This paper introduces an estimation methodology of the injection timing and rate of a common-rail injector for HSDI diesel engines. A sliding mode observer that is based on the nonlinear mathematical model of the common-rail injector is designed to overcome the model uncertainties. The injector model and the estimator we verified by relevant injection experiments in an injector test bench. The simulation and the experimental results show that the proposed sliding mode observer can effectively estimate the injection rate of the common-rail injector.

In the electro-hydraulic injector for the common rail Diesel fuel injection system, the injection nozzle is being opened and closed by movement of a injector's needle which is balanced by pressure at the nozzle seat and at the needle control chamber, at the opposite end of the needle. In this study, the piezo actuator was considered as a prime movers in high pressure Diesel injector. Namely a piezo-driven Diesel injector, as a new method driven by piezoelectric energy, has been applied with a purpose to develop the analysis model of the piezo actuator to predict the dynamics characteristics of the hydraulic component(injector) by using the AMESim code. Aimed at simulating the hydraulic behavior of the piezo-driven injector, the circuit model has been developed and verified by comparison with the experimental results. As this research results, we found that the input voltage exerted on piezo stack is the dominant factor which affects on the initial needle behavior of piezo-driven injector than the hydraulic force generated by the constant injection pressure. Also we know the piezo-driven injector has more degrees of freedom in controlling the injection rate with the high pressure than a solenoid-driven injector.

An injection control valve(ICV) was designed to control the fuel flow between a common rail and an injector with two commercial solenoids. To improve the performance of ICV, the characteristic method was applied. With this method, the flow characteristics in the ICV and the injector were studied and the parameters which affect the injection characteristics were also studied. From this study, following results were obtained. The injection duration can be controlled and with modifications of the effective valve stroke of ICV, the injection quantity and duration can be reduced to desired amount. Also the injection quantity and pressure can be controlled by reducing the hole size of the injector without the variation of the injection duration. For some conditions, the desired injection characteristics can be obtained by the changes of the valve timing, the effective valve stroke, the open pressure of the injector and the hole size of the injector.
It is intended to develope an algorithm for dynamic simulation of fast-acting solenoid valves. The coupled equations of the electric, magnetic, and mechanical systems should be solved simultaneously in a transient nonlinear manner. The transient nonlinear electromagnetic field is analyzed by the Finite Element Method (FEM), which is coupled with nonlinear electronic circuitry. The dynamic movement of the solenoid valve is analyzed at every time step from the force balances acting on the plunger, which include the electromagnetic force calculated from the Finite Element analysis as well as the elastic force by a spring and the hydrodynamic pressure force along the flow passage. Dynamic responses of the solenoid valves predicted by this algorithm agree well with the experimental results including bouncing effects.

Most of fuel-injection system operated with mechanical methods are difficult to control the injection quantity and injection timing as well as injection rate exactly. Moreover high pressure injection scheme is never be realized with conventional one. On the other hand, serious air pollution can be lessened with injection system equipped with those functions. Therefore, electronically controlled Unit Injuctor(UI) appeared to satify above mentioned desires. However, it is still difficult that the most important part, especially solenoid valve, is analyzed precisely, because of the existence of complex combination of electromagnetics, electrics and dynamic problems. In this study, experimental and theoretical analysis are accomplished for understanding of solenoid valve characteristics and further its design. As the result, the follows are obtained 1) As the increase of wire diameter, the response time became shorter and optimal inductance existed in relative with the response time and wire diameter. 2) According to increasing input voltage, the traction force increased, otherwise the response time was shortened. 3) As the increase of armature stroke, the traction force decreased and the response time became longer.

Stringent emission regulations and increasing demands on reductions of noise and vibration of common rail direct injection (CRDI) diesel engines lead to the advent of piezo-actuated injectors. Compared with solenoid-actuated injectors, piezo-actuated injectors generate greater force and give faster response time, resulting in more accurate and faster injections. The accurate and fast response of an injector can offer an opportunity to control the combustion process and pollutant formation. In this study, the mathematical model of a piezo-actuated injector is developed. An estimator of the injection rate of the piezo-actuated injector is designed based on this model. The sliding mode theory is applied to the estimator design in order to overcome model uncertainties. The injector model and the estimator are verified by the injection experiments in an injector test bench. The simulation and the experimental results show that the proposed sliding mode observer can effectively estimate the injection timing and the injection rate of the piezo-actuated injector.

This study describes the analysis results of unsteady cavitating flows behavior inside nozzle of the prototype piezo-driven injector. This piezo-driven injector has been recognised as one of the next generation diesel injector due to a higher driven efficiency than the conventional solenoid-driven injector. The three dimensional geometry model along the central cross-section regarding of one injection hole has been used to simulate the cavitating flows for injection time by at fully transient simulation with cavitation model. The cavitation model incorporates many of the fundamental physical processes assumed to take place in cavitating flows. The simulations performed were both fully transient and 'pseudo' steady state, even if under steady state boundary conditions. We could analyze the effect the pressure drop to the sudden acceleration of fuel, which is due to the fastest response of needle, on the degree of cavitation existed in piezo-driven injector nozzle

The housing of the fuel injector supports the rod, the niddle valve and the solenoid. Based on the procedure of process design, in this paper, the forming operation is designed by the rigid-plastic finite element method. The metal flow during the forming of the fuel injector housing is axisymmetric until the final forming process. The response surface method has been performed to reduce the under-fill and the maximum effective strain. From the results of RSM, the second order regression model of equation is calculated by the least square method and used to determine the optimal values of design variables by simultaneously considering the responses. It is noted that upper under-fill is affected by the design variables of the $2^{nd}$ forming process and lower under-fill is affected by the design variables of the 1st forming process.

The studies on the electronic control fuel injection system for a DI diesel engine have done for reducing the exhaust emission and improving fuel consumption. The electronic control fuel injection system is classified into a common rail system, a unit injector system and a high pressure injection system. The characteristics of these systems are largely depends on the operating characteristics of its solenoid that have high speed on-off operation. In order to improve these characteristics of fuel injection system, it is necessary to design the optimal shape of solenoid and select the input method of its power source. It was proposed HELENOID, COLENOID, DISOLE, and Multipole Solenoid in the studies of design for the optimal shape of solenoid. The studies on the energizing method, input method for power of solenoid were dealt with the conventional energizing method, the chopping method and the pre-energizing method. In order to find out the high response characteristics of solenoid, it is necessary to test the performance of optimally designed solenoid with a new energizing method. In this paper, the solenoid of multi-pole type with plat armature and its power control unit to control input current by the chopping method designed, and its response tests were performed according to its energizing conditions. As a result, the maximum input current for solenoid was controlled by the period of first stage exciting current and chopping duty ratio of control stage exciting current, and the fastest "on" time was able to get 0.46ms. The conditions of fastest "on" time was 0.3ms for first stage exciting current, 0.16ms for control exciting current and 75% for chopping duty ratio.
