  • This paper describes an electronic compass using micromachined X- and Y-axis micro fluxgate sensors which were perpendicularly aligned each other to measure X- and Y-axis magnetic fields respectively. The fluxgate sensor was composed of rectangular-ring shaped magnetic core and solenoid excitation(49 turns) and pick-up(46 turns) coils. Excitation and pick-up coil patterns which were formed opposite to each other wound the magnetic core alternatively to improve the sensitivity and to excite the magnetic core in an optimal condition with reduced excitation current. The magnetic core has DC effective permeability of ~1000 and coercive field of ~0.1 Oe. The magnetic core is easily saturated due to the low coercive field and closed magnetic path for the excitation field. To decrease the difference of induced second harmonic voltages from X- and Y-axis, excitation condition of 2.8 $V_{P-P}$ and 1.2 MHz square wave was selected. Excellent linear response over the range of -100 $\mu$T to +100 $\mu$T was obtained with 210 V/T sensitivity. The size of each micro fluxgate sensor excluding pad region was about 2.6${\times}$1.7 $mm^2$ and the power consumption was estimated to be 14 mW.W.

  • Like composite material. the coil winding pack of the KSTAR (Korea Superconducting Tokamak Advanced Research) consist of multiphase element such as metallic jacket material for protecting superconducting cable, vacuum pressurized imprepregnated (VPI) insulation, and corner roving filler. For jacket material, four CS (Central Solenoid) Coils, $5^{th}$ PF (Poloidal Field) Coil, and TF (Toroidal Field Coil) use Incoloy 908 and $6-7^{th}$ PF coil, Cold worked 316LN. In order to analyze the global behavior of large coil support structure with coil winding pack, it is required to replace the winding pack to monolithic matter with the equivalent mechanical properties, i.e. Young's moduli, shear moduli due to constraint of total nodes number and element numbers. In this study, Equivalent Young's moduli, shear moduli, Poisson's ratio, and thermal expansion coefficient were calculated for all coil winding pack using Finite Element Method.

  • Fault current limiters (FCL) are extensively needed to suppress fault currents, especially for trunk power systems heavily connected to high voltage/large current transmission lines. Due to its ideal electrical behavior, high-temperature superconductor fault current limiter (HTSFCL) becomes one of the most important developing trends of limiters in power system. This paper describes the result of an investigation of the dielectric characteristics of turn-to-turn insulation for pancake and solenoid type reactor coil in liquid nitrogen. The influence of thickness in a variety length, on AC, DC and impulse surface flashover has been investigated. Also, the relationships between the number of turn and breakdown characteristics were clarified. The information gathered in this test series should be helpful in the design of liquid nitrogen filled DC reactor type HTSFCL.

  • In this paper, 3 D.O.F. actuator, which has three degrees of freedom in one joint, is proposed. The proposed 3 D.O.F. spherical actuator is composed of the rotor and atator. The upper plate of the stator supports the rotor and five electromagnets are located at the base of the stator. The rotor has two permanent magnets, and each rotational axis of the rotor gimbal system is supported by the bearing. To find out the governing equations for the torque generation, Coulombs law and Lorentz force with respect to magnetism is applied. As the experimental results, if the distance between electromagnet and permanent maget is far enough, the force between these magnets can be expressed from current of coils and z-axial distance. For the purpose of control 3 D.O.F. actuator, PID control law is applied. The experimental results are presented to show the validity of the proposed 3 D.O.F. actuator.

  • A post-processing technique for the measurement signal of a solenoid-type sensor is introduced. The solenoid-type sensor nondestructively evaluates an external tendon of prestressed concrete using the total flux leakage (TFL) method. The TFL solenoid sensor consists of primary and secondary coils. AC electricity, with the shape of a sinusoidal function, is input in the primary coil. The signal proportional to the differential of the input is induced in the secondary coil. Because the amplitude of the induced signal is proportional to the cross-sectional area of the tendon, sectional loss of the tendon caused by ruptures or corrosion can be identified by the induced signal. Therefore, it is important to extract amplitude information from the measurement signal of the TFL sensor. Previously, the amplitude was extracted using local maxima, which is the simplest way to obtain amplitude information. However, because the sampling rate is dramatically decreased by amplitude extraction using the local maxima, the previous method places many restrictions on the direction of TFL sensor development, such as applying additional signal processing and/or artificial intelligence. Meanwhile, the proposed method uses amplitude demodulation to obtain the signal amplitude from the TFL sensor, and the sampling rate of the amplitude information is same to the raw TFL sensor data. The proposed method using amplitude demodulation provides ample freedom for development by eliminating restrictions on the first coil input frequency of the TFL sensor and the speed of applying the sensor to external tension. It also maintains a high measurement sampling rate, providing advantages for utilizing additional signal processing or artificial intelligence. The proposed method was validated through experiments, and the advantages were verified through comparison with the previous method. For example, in this study the amplitudes extracted by amplitude demodulation provided a sampling rate 100 times greater than those of the previous method. There may be differences depending on the given situation and specific equipment settings; however, in most cases, extracting amplitude information using amplitude demodulation yields more satisfactory results than previous methods.

  • To observe the effect of excitation coil pitch on the micro fluxgate magnetic sensor, two sensors are fabricated using multi layer board process and the pitch distance of excitation coil are $260\;{\mu}m$ and $520\;{\mu}m$, respectively. The fluxgate sensor consists of five PCB stack layers including one layer of magnetic core and four layers of excitation and pick-up coils. The center layer as magnetic core is made of a Co-based amorphous magnetic ribbon with extremely high DC permeability of ${\sim}100,000$ and has a rectangular-ring shape to minimize the magnetic flux leakage. Four outer layers as excitation and pick-up coils have a planar solenoid structure and are made of copper foil. In case of the fluxgate sensor having the excitation coil pitch of $260\;{\mu}m$, excellent linear response over the range of $-100\;{\mu}T$ to $+100\;{\mu}T$ is obtained with sensitivity of 780 V/T at excitation sine wave of $3V_{p_p}$ and 360 kHz. The chip size of the fabricated sensing element is $7.3\;{\times}\;5.7\;mm^2$. The very low power consumption of ${\sim}8\;mW$ is measured. This magnetic sensor is very useful for various applications such as: portable navigation systems, telematics, VR game and so on.

  • SQUID sensor-based ultra low-field magnetic resonance apparatus with ${\mu}T$-level measurement field requires a strong prepolarization magnetic field ($B_p$) to magnetize its sample and obtain magnetic resonance signal with a high signal-to-noise ratio. This $B_p$ needs to be ramped down very quickly so that it does not interfere with signal acquisition which must take place before the sample magnetization relaxes off. A MOSFET switch-based $B_p$ coil driver has current ramp-down time ($t_{rd}$) that increases with $B_p$ current, which makes it unsuitable for driving high-field $B_p$ coil made of superconducting material. An energy cycling-type current driver has been developed for such a coil. This driver contains a storage capacitor inside a switch in IGBT-diode bridge configuration, which can manipulate how the capacitor is connected between the $B_p$ coil and its current source. The implemented circuit with 1.2 kV-tolerant devices was capable of driving 32 A current into a thick copper-wire solenoid $B_p$ coil with a 182 mm inner diameter, 0.23 H inductance, and 5.4 mT/A magnetic field-to-current ratio. The measured trd was 7.6 ms with a 160 ${\mu}F$ storage capacitor. trd was dependent only on the inductance of the coil and the capacitance of the driver capacitor. This driver is scalable to significantly higher current of superconducting $B_p$ coils without the $t_{rd}$ becoming unacceptably long with higher $B_p$ current.

  • Air core based transformers have been designed, simulated and fabricated by using micromachining process for the application of wireless power transmission with the range of frequency from 1 GHz to 20 GHz. Fabricated transformers are the types of solenoid transformers with primary and secondary coils. the size of fabricated transformer is $1.1{\times}1.5{\sim}2.15\;mm$ including ground shield. Transformers have been measured by dividing two groups based on the turns ratio between primary coil and secondary coil which are 1:1 transformers(the number of turns of primary coil and secondary coil: 3/3, 5/5, 7/7) and l:n transformers(the number of turns of primary coil and secondary coil: 3/3, 3/6, 3/9). As a result of the measurement, the lowest insertion loss of transformers ranged from 2 dB to 2.8 dB according to the number of turns between primary coil and secondary coil. And the lowest insertion loss from the transformers was measured at the frequency from 7 GHz to 11 GHz according to the number of turns between primary coil and secondary coil. Based on the measurement data from the microfabricated transformers, the transformer with the 3/3 turns in the primary coil and secondary coil showed best performance compared to others in terms of lowest insertion loss, lowest insertion loss frequency and bandwidth.

  • This paper presents the vibration control performance of the smart passive control system to suppress the undesired vibration of the structure subjected to the earthquake loadings. Smart passive control system is the MR damper-based control system augmented with electromagnetic induction(EMI) device which consists of permanent magnets and solenoid coils. According to the Faraday's law of electromagnetic induction, an EMI device produces electrical energy from the mechanical energy due to the reciprocal motions of the structure and provide it to the MR damper. The smart passive control system can be the simple and easy to implement and maintain control system by replacing the feedback control system including sensors, controllers and external power sources of the conventional MR damper-based semiactive control system with the EMI device. The control performance of the smart passive control system is evaluated through the set of shaking table test considering the various historical earthquake loadings.
