  • In this paper, we analyzed the electrical characteristics with Micro-cracks in Photovoltaic module. Micro cracks are increasing the breakage risk over the whole value chine from the wafer to the finished module, because the wafer or cell is exposed to mechanical stress. And The solar cells have to with stand the stress under out door operation in the finished module. Here the mechanical stress is induced by temperature changes and mechanical loads from wind and snow. So, we experimentally analyze the direct impact of micro-cracks on the module power and the consequences after artificial aging. The first step, we made micro-cracks in PV module by mechanical load test according to IEC 61215. Next, PV modules applied the thermal cycling test, because micro-cracks accelerated aging by thermal cycling test, according to IEC61215. Before every test, we checked output and EL image of PV module. As the result of first step, we detected little power loss(0.9%). But after thermal cycling test increased power loss about 3.2%.

  • This study was focused on the establishment of a fundamental DB(database) that is available in the building design process, so we performed the simulation analysis about the energy consumption on the various same volume buildings. Because energy consumption in building is affected by the exterior surface area, the ratio of long/short length in surface and the adjacent internal surface area etc.. For these purpose, we assumed the unit module and made a constructable 16 model buildings which are composed of the 16 unit modules. Then we analyzed the simulation using the TRNSYS 16 and the Seoul weather data. In results, energy consumption in building is more reduced that in case of the smaller exterior surface area, the lower stories building and the larger adjacent surface area etc.. Further study is to be required the sensitivity analysis on the various weather conditions, building shapes and window area etc..

Positive support in the module by wind loads if uniformly distributed load acting on the front glass of the module size and elongation(${\omega}$), and accordingly, depending on the bend is sealed inside the solar cell, micro-cracks that will occur. At this point the most damage-prone parts in a module, this module is part of the center of a strong wind load is applied by the destruction of the environment does not occur in the module frame to secure the reliability and to evaluate changes in the structure.

  • Normally, PV system is designed using local weather condition like lowest and highest temperature and irradiance. But this might give misleading results because it is not realistic data of PV module itself. To give more specific description of PV system, we tested photovoltaic(PV) modules' temperature, irradiance and maximum power generation characteristics from January to December in 2008 for 3kW PV system. From this, we could deeply analyze the accumulation temperature, electrical characteristics of PV module in various condition. So precise approach to PV system design can be done. The detail description is specified as the following paper.

  • Energy conversion soda-lime-silica glasses doped with Eu3+ were produced and they were used to build small scale modules of $100\times100cm$ simulating the roof of glass house with which the rearing state of a small number of young and grown vegetables was observed. The vegetables selected for the study were eggplant, kale, and pimento. The width and length of their leaves along with the photosynthesized ability and chlorophyl content were measured to observe the growing state of the vegetables in the given periods of time. It was found that the vegetables grown under the photo-conversion glass made panels had higher values of the leaf width and length by 5 to 30% than them under the commercially available ordinary glass panels depending on the kind of vegetables. The photosynthesized abilities were also shown much higher for the vegetables under the conversion glass panels than for the non-conversion ones.

  • Though there are many causes for the maximum output power reduction, the short-term problem is hot-spot effect by sun shading. To prevent this, normally PV maker uses bypass diode. In here, we tried to check the how bypass diodes works by varying sun shading portion on solar. In case of absence of bypass, the sun shading effect increases the series resistance and that promotes the reduction of maximum power and degradation of PV modules. Bypass diode worked normally when 60% of solar cell was shaded and the measured maximum output power was lower than that of theoretical one. The further analysis is needed.

  • In material processing, a laser system with optimal laser parameters has been considered to be significant. Especially, the laser scribing technology is thought to be very important for fabricating DSSC(Dye sensitized solar eel!) modules with good quality. Moreover, the $TEM_{00}$ mode laser beam is the most dominant factor to decide the IPCE(Incident photon to current conversion efficiency) characteristics. In order to get the $TEM_{00}$ mode, a pin-hole is inserted within a simple pulsed Nd:YAG laser resonator. And the spatial field distribution is measured by using three size pin-hole diameters of 2.0, 6.0mm respectively. At that moment, each case has the same laser beam energy by adjusting the discharge voltage and pps(pulse per second). From those results, it is known that the pin-hole size of 2.0mm has the perfect $TEM_{00}$ mode. In addition, at the charging voltage of 1000V, 10pps and the feeding speed of 1.11mm/sec, the SEM photo of FTO(Fluorine-doped tin oxide) thin film layers shows the best scribing trace.

  • In order to increase the cost effectiveness of solar cells, module production should be treated more comprehensively. Back contact cells offer distinct advantage in the interconnection of cells to modules. Thereby Mo thin film were prepared in order to clarify optimum conditions for growth of the thin film depending upon process, and then by changing a number of deposition conditions and substrate temperature conditions variously, structural and electrical characteristics were measured. For the manufacture of the Mo were vapor-deposited in the named order. Among them, Mo were vapor-deposited by using the sputtering method in consideration of their adhesive force to the substrate, and the DC power was controlled so that the composition of Mo, while the surface temperature having an effect on the quality of the thin film was changed from R.T$[^{\circ}C]$ to $200[^{\circ}C]$ at intervals of $50[^{\circ}C]$. Micro-structural studies were carried out by XRD (D/MAX-1200, Rigaku Co.) and SEM (JSM-5400, Jeol Co.). Electrical properties were measured by CMT-SR3000 Measurement System.

  • In this study, three different types of experimental models of BIPV curtain wall units with GIGS modules were built, and their thermal and electrical performances were analyzed. The experimental results showed that the temperature of the rear side of the GIGS module with the application of an insulation in the curtain wall spandrels was higher than a GIGS module standalone by $22^{\circ}C$, which results in a reduction in the power generation of the former by 8 %. On the other hand, when ventilation was applied to the model to improve the power generation performance, the module temperature was observed to be $142^{\circ}C$ lower compared to the enclosed type, and the power generation performance improved by 5 %. It confirmed that the temperature increase in the rear side of the GIGS module with insulation layer reduced the electrical performance of the module. Based on this, it is claimed that providing sufficient ventilation at the GIGS applied spandrels contribute to improve the power generation of the GIGS module.

  • Solar power generation systems require maximum power point tracking (MPPT) control to acquire maximum power using inefficient and high-cost PV modules. Most conventional MPPT algorithms are based on the slope-tracking concept. The perturb and observe (P&O) algorithm is a typical slope-tracking method. The two factors that determine the MPPT performance of P&O algorithm are the MPPT control period and the magnitude of the perturbation voltage. The MPPT controller quickly moves to the new maximum power point at insolation change when the perturbation voltage is set to large, and the error of output power will be huge in the steady state even when insolation is not changing. The dynamics of the MPPT controller can be accelerated even though the perturbation voltage is set to small when the MPPT control period is set to short. However, too short MPPT control period does not improve MPPT performance but consumes the MPPT controller resources. Therefore, analyzing the performance of the MPPT controller is necessary for actual insolation conditions in real weather environment to determine the optimum MPPT control period and the magnitude of the perturbation voltage. This study proposes an optimum MPPT control period that maximizes MPPT efficiency by measuring and analyzing actual insolation profiles in typical clear and cloudy weather in central Korea.
