  • The amount of incident solar rays on inclined surfaces with various directions has been widely utilized as important data in installing solar collector, hot water system, and designing solar buildings and house. This is because the performance of the solar energy applied systems is much affected by angle and direction of incident rays. Recognizing those factors mentioned above are of importance, actual experiment has been performed in this research to obtain the angle of inclination with which the maximum incident rays can be absorbed. The results obtained in this research could be used in designing optimal solar thermal systems.

  • The objective of this study was to improve the accuracy of calculation and estimation of solar radiation and duration of sunshine, which are the most important variables of photovoltaic power generation in deciding the location of photovoltaic facilities efficiently. With increasing interest in new and renewable energies, research on solar energy is also being conducted actively, but there have not been many studies on the location of photovoltaic facilities. Thus, this study calculated solar duration and solar radiation based on geographical factors, which have the most significant effect on solar energy in GIS environment, and corrected the results of analysis using diffuse radiation. Moreover, we performed ordinary kriging, a spatial statistical analysis method, for estimating values for parts deviating from the spatial resolution of input data, and used variogram, which can determine the spatial interrelation and continuity of data, in order to estimate accurate values. In the course, we compared the values of variogram factors and estimates from applicable variogram models, and selected the model with the lowest error rate. This method is considered helpful to accurate decision making on the location of photovoltaic facilities.

  • Solar power is being spotlighted recently as a new energy source due to environmental problems and applications of solar power to curved structures are increasing. Solar panels installed on curved surfaces have different efficiencies depending on its position and the efficient positioning of solar panels plays a critical role in the design of solar power generation systems. In this study, the changing characteristics of solar irradiance were analyzed for hemispherical dome with a large curvature and the positioning of solar panels that can efficiently utilize solar energy was investigated. With an icosahedron-based hemispherical dome consisting of triangular elements as target model, a program for calculating solar irradiance using a normal vector of the solar module on each face was developed. Furthermore, the change of solar irradiance according to the sun's path was analyzed by time and season, and its effects on shades were also examined. From the analysis results, the effective positioning could be determined on the basis of the efficiency of the solar panels installed on the dome surfaces on solar irradiance.

  • Since it was first studied in 1980, solar energy analysis model for geographic information systems has been used to determine the approximate spatial distribution of terrain. However, the spatial pattern was not able to be grasped in 3D (three-dimensional) space with low accuracy due to the limitation of input data. Because of computational efficiency, using a constant value for the brightness of the sky caused the simulation results to be less reliable especially when the slope is high or buildings are crowded around. For the above reasons, this study proposed a model that predicts solar energy of vertical surfaces of buildings with four stages below. Firstly, CIE (Commission Internationale de l'Eclairage) luminance distribution model was used to calculate the brightness distribution of the sky using NREL (National Renewable Energy Laboratory) solar tracking algorithm. Secondly, we suggested a method of calculating the shadow effect using ray tracing. Thirdly, LOD (Level of Detail) 3 of 3D spatial data was used as input data for analysis. Lastly, the accuracy was evaluated based on the atmospheric radiation data collected through the ground observation equipment in Daejeon, South Korea. As a result of evaluating the accuracy, NMBE was 5.14%, RMSE 11.12, and CVRMSE 7.09%.

  • A numerical and experimental studies are carried out to investigate the transient heat transfer characteristics of 5kWth dish type solar air receiver. Measured solar radiation and temperatures at several different locations are used as boundary conditions for numerical a. Many parameters' effects (reflectivity of the reflector, the thermal conductivity of the receiver body, transmissivity of the quartz window, etc.) on the thermal performance are investigated. Discrete Transfer Method is used to calculate the radiation heat exchange in the receiver. A transient heat transfer model is developed and the rate of radiation, convection and conduction heat transfer are calculated. Comparing of the experimental and the numerical results, results of both are in good agreement. Using the numerical model, the transient heat transfer characteristics of volumetric air receiver for dish type solar thermal systems are known and the transient thermal performance of the receiver can be estimated.

  • This study proposes a Passive Solar Chamber System (PSCS) as a passive method for reduction of building energy consumption. Through numerical analysis, the study quantitatively analyzes system performance and aims to provide foundational data for system design. For this purpose, the study configures different system operation modes seasonally and also computes thermal and ventilation performance of the system in accordance with design factors(solar radiation, air channel height and distance). System and ventilation efficiency increases along with increase in solar radiation and air channel distance; however, as the air channel height increases, the efficiencies showed a tendency to decrease. Upon installation of PSCS, an average of $98.23W/m^2$ of heat flux was introduced in the daytime for the month of January in comparison to walls with no PSCS installed. For the month of August, natural ventilation of $56.68m^3/h$ was shown to be supplied to the room.

  • In this study, a numerical analysis is made of the fluid flow and heat transfer characteristics in the solar arrays of HALE (High Altitude Lond Endurance) UAV. In the stratosphere where UAV operates, high level solar radiation is induced, heat transfer decreases due to natural convection and forced convection is dominated by ambient flow. In order to predict the solar array temperature range in this environment condition, the conjugate heat transfer analysis was carried out for the solar arrays on the main wing. The investigation focused on the temperature distribution of solar array and heat transfer characteristics according to influence of solar energy, flight condition as vehicle speed, air density, temperature.

  • The current study focuses on the consistent analysis of heat transfer in multichannel volumetric solar receivers used for concentrating solar power. Changes in the properties of the absorbing material and channel dimensions are considered in an optical model based on the Monte Carlo ray-tracing method and in a one-dimensional heat transfer model that includes conduction, convection, and radiation. The optical model results show that most of the solar radiation energy is absorbed within a very small channel length of around 15 mm because of the large length-to-radius ratio. Classification of radiation losses reveals that at low absorptivity, increased reflection losses cause reduction of the receiver efficiency, notwithstanding the decrease in the emission loss. As the average temperature increases because of the large channel radius or small mass flow rate, both emission and reflection losses increase but the effect of emission losses prevails.

  • The objective of this study is to clarify the effect of thermal radiation environments on human thermal comfort, depending on different canyon types and surface materials on the human thermal comfort in a housing complex in Pohang city, Korea. For this purpose, the operative temperature and new effective temperature were calculated based on the modified mean radiant temperature of canyon models variated by the existence of direct radiation existence, surface materials, and the width and length of the street spaces in a housing complex. These indices for the canyon have been calculated from the meteorological data of Pohang city, which include air temperature, relative humidity, air velocity, global solar radiation and cloud. And the monthly averages of these climate factors measured at noon have been used. The results are as follows: (1) It is revealed that the short-wave radiosity reached the human body is affected by direct solar radiation and surface materials, and the long-wave radiosity by canyon types. (2) The existence of direct solar radiation, the kinds of surface materials and canyon types affect operative temperature($OT_n$) and new effective temperature($ET^*{_n}$). (3) The analysis of the human heat balance in the canyon indicates that the influence of radiation on human body is marc likely to be affected by the existence of direct solar radiation on human model.
