  • In this study, the behavior and safety factor of a nailed-soil excavation wall during earthquake is presented. The horizontal displacement, axial force, shear force, and moment of facing of a nailed-soil excavation wall subjected to static and seismic load are analyzed using time history analysis. The safety factor based on the strength reduction technique proposed by Dawson and Roth is used to calculate the safety factor of a nailed-soil excavation wall during earthquake. The safety factor by the proposed method is verified by comparing with those by other methods.

  • The several computer programs for the design of soil nailed wall are often used in Korea. However, these programs have been used without any practical justification. Therefore, in order to evaluate the applicability of these programs for the design of soil nailing, these computer results were analyzed and compared with one another. The performance evaluations by the available programs, such as SNAILZ, TALREN97, SLOPE/W, STABL6, and NAILM16, were applied and the applied data were from 5 case history(15 section). The estimated factors of safety with available programs were compared with observed horizontal deformation from the field. The results showed that the program SNAILZ is most adequate tool for the design of soil nailed wall.

  • The soil nailing method has been developed on the basis of experimental works as well as theoretical backgrounds. As for the experimental research works, most of the data have been measured during the application of load in service. However, not only the soil-nailed structure behavior in service but also the failure behavior of the structure is major concern to evaluate and even establish a design method of soil-nailed walls. In this study, a relatively large-scale experiment was carried out to figure out the failure behavior of soil-nailed wall. A number of data such as displacement of soil-nailed walls, soil pressure in soil-nailed walls, atrial strain and axial force of nail etc.'have been acquired and analysis.

  • A soil mailed wall is adapted as road widening measure and is constructed under a miniature abutment built on steel pipe piles. The soil nailed wall called for removal of the existing embankment slope to permanently retain the fill behind the abutment. The soil nailed wall is fully instrumented and is monitored. A 3D finite element analysis is used to study further the behavior of the soil nailed wall. The complete sequence of construction is simulated. The numerical model is calibrated against the instrumented nailed wall. Then a parametric study is conducted. The results provide valuable information related to the effect of the excavation and nailing on the following: axial load and bending moment in the piles, load in the nails, and wall deflections.

  • Behaviour of soil nailed walls in Korea has been analysed based on a number of field measurements. The investigation has included interface shear strength development at the nail-soil interface from pull-out tests, lateral ground displacements, tensile force distributions along soil nails and mobilised interface shear stress distributions. Insights into the soil nailed wall behaviour based on the shear transfer mechanism at the soil-nail interface and partial mobilisations of the interface shear strength, governed by relative shear displacement, are reported and discussed. It is expected that results from the current research can provide relevant parameters required for preliminary design of soil nailed walls in Korea.

  • An analytical procedure is described to estimate the mobilized tensile forces along the effective lengths of nails. Based on the horizontal focing displacements of a nailed-soil wall experiencing outward tilt about the toe with granular soil deposit, the variation of nail-soil friction coefficient is modeled. Also, the method of overall stability analysis of a nailed-soil wall is presented using the Morgenstem-Price limit-equilibrium slice method. The results predicted by the developed procedure are compared with test measurements. The comparisons show in general good agreement.

  • The several computer programs for the design of soil nailed wall are often used in Korea. However, these programs have been used without and practical justification. Therefore, in order to evaluate the applicability of these programs for the design of soil nailing, these computer results were analyzed and compared with one another. The performance evaluations by the available programs, such as SNAILZ, TALREN97, SLOPE/W STABL6, and NAILMI6, were applied and the applied data were from 6 case history(21 section). The estimated factors of safety with available programs were compared with observed horizontal deformation from the field. This study showed that the program SNAILZ is most adequate tool for the design of soil nailed wall. Also, The finite element program SOILSTRUCT was applied for the analysis of nail inclination effect in soil nailed wall. The program SOILSTRUCT showed that the most optimal inclination of nail was $20^{\circ}$. However, the effect of nail inclination on the wall deformation was negligible. Also, the tension force of the nail were increased as the nail inclination increased, and the tension force of the nail increased as the depth increased, except the deepest nail. Therefore, the larger diameter nail should be considered if the inclination of nail is steeper than the suggested range, and the deeper nails should have the larger diameters than those of shallower nails except for the deepest one.

  • This article examines the seismic vulnerability of soil nail wall structures. Detailed information regarding finite element modeling has been provided. The fragility function evaluates the relationship between ground motion intensities and the probability of surpassing a specific level of damage. The use of incremental dynamic analysis (IDA) has been applied to the soil nail wall against low to severe ground motions. In the nonlinear dynamic analysis of the soil nail wall, a set of twenty seismic ground motions with varying PGA ranges are used. The numerical results demonstrate that the soil-nailed wall reaction is extremely sensitive to earthquake ground vibrations under different intensity measures (IM). In addition, the analytical fragility curve is provided for various intensity values.

  • Soil nailing systems are generally many used in underground excavations and reinforcements of slopes since the first construction as a temporary retaining wall in 1993, Korea. In recently, they are many attempts to expand the permanent reinforcements of slopes However, experimental studies related to soil nailing systems are insufficient Specially, there are no researches related in the large scaled load tests of soil nailed walls in Korea In this study, a case study on the large scaled load tests of soil nailed walls is introduced and the behavior characteristic of them is investigated Also, they are proposed allowable deformation corresponding to the serviceability limit of soil nail walls and ultimate deformation corresponding to the collapse state of the walls. These results can be applied to the maintenance management of soil nailed walls And analysis on the required minimum factor of safety of soil nailed walls using the relation curve of load ratio and deformation ratio are carried out
