  • This paper presents a case study that achieved both of serviceability and safety of the building through soil reinforcement and restoration around foundations subjected to serious differential settlement using D-ROG method. The building which has one basement floor and three ground floors is founded on soft ground and differential settlement occurred to the maximum extent of 678mm. The foundation type of the building is a independent mat foundation. Soil profiles consist of landfill layer, alluvial layer, weathered rock, and soft rock. The bearing layer consisting of gravel and weathered rock is located 16.0~17.0m below the bottom of the building. As a result of soil reinforcement and restoration, the recovery ratio of more than 90% can be attained with the maximum set-up of 657mm.

  • Interest to basal reinforced piled embankments is increasing recently due to their rapid construction and reliability. A comprehensive parametric study is conducted to determine effects of pile properties, reinforcement stiffness, embankment properties and soft soil properties into settlements, pressures and excess pore water pressure development and dissipations. Results which are obtained by using one-layer reinforcement during construction are compared with the results obtained by using two-layer reinforcement during construction. Finite element method is used during the parametric study. Second layer of reinforcement is placed in five different positions in order to reveal effects of reinforcement position into behaviour. Traffic load is also taken into consideration during the study. Differences between the results without presence of traffic loading and with presence of traffic loading is stated in this the study.

  • In this study, the steel strip reinforcement bolted with braced angles is displayed skin friction resistance as well as passive resistance through existing the steel strip reinforcement. To understand pullout behavior characteristics, friction effects between soil and reinforcement are evaluated with the width of reinforcement, magnitude of surcharge, and existence of passive resistance member through laboratory pullout test. To analyze interference effects for passive resistance member, various tests are carried on case that the number, the location, and the spacing of braced angles are different. Using this test result, pullout resistance factor is calculated to consider location of braced angles and degree of interference for spacing ratio.

  • Recently, geogrid reinforcement has been applied tn the subgrade of the roadway and the railway on the compressible layered soil, and the relevant reserch on the reinforcing mechanism has been performed. In this study, mechanics of geogrid reinforcement and the parameters for the improvement of bearing capacity are evaluated and presented based on the case histories of the field load test on the geogrid-reinforced layered subgrade

  • This paper reports the application study of the ground reinforcement under a pipe joint. The soil-reinforcement interaction helps to minimize the stress concentration at joint. The settlement pattern and the earth pressure variation have been evaluated under the pipeline subjected to differential settlement. The pipeline is fixed at one side with the other side set free being loaded with a uniform surface loading. The problem has been studied by means of laboratory model test and flite element technique, and the analysis results are compared for both non-reinforced and reinforced cases to evaluate the effectiveness of the soil reinforcement for restraining the settlement of the pipeline.

  • The most soil anchor works have been concerned with the uplift problem on embedded in non-reinforced soils under pullout test. Symmetrical anchor plates are a foundation system that can be resisting tensile load with the support of around soil in which symmetrical anchor plate is embedded. Engineers and authors proved that the uplift response can be improved by grouping the symmetrical anchor plates, increasing the unit weight, embedment ratio and the size of symmetrical anchor plates. Innovation of geosynthetics in the field of geotechnical engineering as reinforcement materials found to be possible solution in symmetrical anchor plate responses. Unfortunately the importance of reinforcement in submergence has received very little attention by researchers. In this paper, provision of tensile reinforcement under embedded conditions has been studied through uplift experiments on symmetrical anchor plates by few researchers. From the test results it has been showed that the provision of geogrid reinforcement system enhances the uplift response substantially under uplift test although other results are such as increase the ultimate uplift response of symmetrical anchor plate embedded using geosynthetic and Grid Fixed Reinforced (GFR) and symmetrical anchor plate improvement is very dependent on geosynthetic layer length and increases significantly until the amount of beyond that further increase in the layer length does not show a significant contribution in the anchor response.

  • This paper presents the results of a numerical investigation of the effect of geotextile reinforcement on underlying buried pipe behavior using PLAXIS 3D. In this study, variable parameters such as the in-plane stiffness of the geotextile, the pipe stiffness, the soil stiffness, the footing width, the geotextile width, and the location of the geotextile reinforcement layer are investigated. Deflections and bending moments acting on the pipe are evaluated for different combinations of variables and are presented graphically. It is observed that with an increase in the in-plane stiffness of the geotextile reinforcement, there is a tendency for a decrease in both deflections in the pipe and bending moments acting on the pipe. Conversely, with an increase in the pipe stiffness, geotextile reinforcement efficiency decreases. In the investigated region of soil stiffness, for the given pipe and geotextile stiffness, an optimum efficiency of geotextile is observed in medium dense soils. Further, it is shown that relative lengths of geotextile and footing has an important role on geotextile efficiency. Lastly, it is also demonstrated that relative location of geotextile layer with respect to the buried pipe plays an important role on the geotextile efficiency in reducing the bending moments acting on the pipe and deflections in the pipe. In general, geotextiles are more efficient in reducing the bending moments as opposed to reducing deflections of the pipe. Numerical validation is done with an experimental study from the literature to observe the applicability of the numerical model used.

  • The model using homogenization technique based on energy concept for the prediction of the failure criterion of staple fiber mixed soil was developed to increase the practice and the application of staple fiber as a reinforcement for improving soft ground and agrictural structures. Parameters of the model are aspect ration and volumetric ocntnet of fiber, cohesion and internal friction angle of soil, adhesiion intercept of soil and fiber. It is judged that the model developed in this study is applicable to the soil composed of clay, silt and sand mixed by linear types of fiber such as steel bar, steel fiber , natural fiber etc..

  • A series of experimental study are performed to evaluate the shear strength and friction properties of fiber-mixed soil as backfill material in reinforced earth wall. In order to evaluate the properties of shear strength the big-size direct shear tests are carried out and on the friction properties, the shear friction tests and the pull-out tests are performed. In the results, when the mixed ratio of the net type fiber is 0.2%, the reinforcement effect was better than the others. Also the reinforcement effect of the net type fiber was larger than that of the line type fiber.
