It is well known that the quality of sample significantly determines the accuracy of soil parameters for laboratory testing. Although sampling disturbance has been studied over the last few decades, the theoretical investigation of soil disturbance due to sampling penetration has been rarely reported. In this paper, an analytical solution for estimating the soil disturbance due to sampling penetration was presented using cavity expansion method. Analytical results in several cases reveal that the soil at different location along the sample centerline experiences distinct phases of strain during the process of sampling penetration. The magnitude of induced strain is dependent on the position of the soil element within the sampler and the sampler geometry expressed as diameter-thickness ratio D/t and length-diameter ratio L/D. Effects of sampler features on soil disturbance were also studied. It is found that the induced maximum strain decreases exponentially with increasing diameter-thickness ratio, indicating that the sampling disturbance will reduce with increasing diameter or decreasing wall thickness of sampler. It is also found that a large length-diameter ratio does not necessarily reduce the disturbance. An optimal length-diameter ratio is suggested for the further design of improved sampler in this study.
Natural clays exhibit features such as structural and anisotropy. In this work, a constitutive model that is able to replicate these two salient features of natural clays is presented. The proposed model is based on the classical S-CLAY1 model, where the anisotropy of the soil is captured through the initial inclination and rotation of the yield surface. To account for the structural of the soil, the compression curve of the reconstituted soil is taken as the reference. All parameters of the proposed constitutive model have clear physical meanings and can be conveniently determined from conventional triaxial tests. This proposed model has been used to simulate the behavior of soft soil in the undrained triaxial tests and the performance of Murro embankment in terms of settlement and horizontal displacements during embankment construction and consolidation stage. Results of numerical simulations using proposed model have been compared with the field measurement data. The comparisons show that the two features significantly influence the prediction results.

Stability of embankment is influenced on landfill condition, permeability, shear strength and soil engineering propensity and so on, and need examination in reply because is different according to change of soil property of foundation ground and permeability condition. Analyzed seepage behaviour by finite element method for embankment, and change permeability of base to analyze effect that permeability of ground water table formation before embankment and analyze seepage behaviour to typical embankment in this research. In the case of permeability of foundation ground is 10 more than landfill permeability, rise of groundwater table was changed slightly. Pore water pressure was decreased slowly in landfill after rainfall. The effect of permeability of foundation ground was effected in change of pore water pressure. For permeability of foundation ground is 10 more than landfill, stability of road landfill was small changed during rainfall. But in the case of permeability of base soil similar to landfill permeability, road landfill stability was large decreased during rainfall.

A series of centrifuge model tests were performed to investigate the behavior of piled bridge abutment subjected to lateral soil movements induced by the construction of approach embankment. In these tests, both the depth of soft clay and the rate of embankment construction are chosen as key parameters to examine the effects on lateral soil movements. The depth of soft clay layer varies from 5.2 m to 11.6 m, and the rate of embankment construction has two types of staged construction(1m/30days, 1m/15days) and instant construction. It is shown that, the distribution of lateral flow induced by stage embankment construction has a trapezoidal distribution. And practical guidelines to check the possibility of some lateral movement of piled abutment were investigated. The validity of the proposed guidelines by centrifuge test was compared with the observed performance by lateral movement index, F(Japan Highway Public Corporation) and modified I index(Korea Highway Corporation). Based on the results obtained, the critical values of F and modified I, as a practical guidelines, are proposed to 0.03 and 2.0, respectively.
The water leakage of reservoir embankment usually occurs through water vein, which gives little influence on the embankment in a normal state. However, the embankment can be destroyed when the water level of reservoir increases with heavy rain in summer. Investigating the water vein and its path is therefore very important from the viewpoint of disater prevention and embankment protection. This paper presents survey results of one-meter-depth ground temperature and multi-point temperature logging in an embankment in Japan to delineate water veins and permeable formations. Four water veins have been predicted in the embankment by comparing measured one-meter-depth ground temperatures with the background ones which have no effect of water vein. The multi-point temperature logging was carried out in the borehole drilled at one of the predicted water veins. Depth and thickness of the permeable formation in the borehole can be determined from temperature restoration ratios with elapsed time. From these results we can find that the water leakage of reservoir embankment mainly occurs in sandy soil formation in the embankment.
The factors affecting the vertical loads acting on embankment piles can be classified into two factors on pile and soil. Factor on pile is the space between pile cap and factors on soil are embankment height and soil parameters(c, $\phi$). Therefore, a series of model tests were performed both to investigate the extent of influence of these factors and to verify the reliability of the proposed theoretical analysis. In the model tests, the piles were installed in the 6 columns $\times$ 6 rows(or 5 columns $\times$ 5 rows) below the embankment and the isolated pile caps with the area of 2.5cm $\times$ 2.5cm were installed on each pile head. The portion of the embankment load carried by model pile caps decreases with increment of the space between pile caps and increases with increment of the embankment height and the relative density(or internal friction angle) of fill. Also, the experimental results showed good agreement with theoretical predictions.

It is not easy to find a good soil condition due to the shortage of suitable land for construction work. The earth structure and buildings can be constructed over the soft soil. The soft soil must be treated either using the reinforcement element or dewatering. Most of land reclamation projects are being implemented along the south coast or west coast of the Korean Peninsula. The soils in these areas are covered with the soft marine clay, so soil and site improvement is the most important things to do. Pile foundation at the bottom of embankment can be constructed either in the soft ground or in the soil contaminated area. The purpose of this research is to develop "geogrid-reinforced piled embankment method" to prevent the differential settlement and increase the bearing capacity of soil. In this study, the effectiveness of the geogrid-reinforcement was studied by varying the space between piles and reinforcement conditions. Also, the geotechnical engineering properties of the embankment material and foundation soil were determined through the laboratory tests as well as the field tests. As a result, the site that the pile-spacing S = 3b with geogrid reinforcement is the most effective to reduce the differential settlement and increase load bearing capacity.

A high embankment is generally constructed by dividing into several sub-embankments. Unlike any soil embankment, a rock embankment is constructed by means of dynamic compaction. Such a sub-embankment and dynamic compaction may induce an increase of pressure at the lower part of embankment and cause a different behavior of ground from initial status. In this study, settlement of a high rock embankment is estimated using a hyperbolic model taking into construction history. The results from prediction are compared with those obtained from field measurements and large plate loading tests.
A method to design a critical height of embankments is presented so as to mobilize fully soil arching in pile-supported embankments. The behavior of the load transfer of embankment weights on pile cap beams was investigated by a series of model tests performed on pile-supported embankments with relatively wide space between cap beams. The model tests explained that the behavior of the load transfer depended very much on the height of embankments, because soil arching could be mobilized in pile-supported embankments only under enough high embankments. The measured vertical loads on cap beams coincided with the predicted ones estimated by the theoretical equations, which have been presented in the previous studies on the basis of load transfer mechanisms according to either the punching shear failure mode during low filling stage or the soil arching failure mode during high filling stage. The mechanism of the load transfer was shifted beyond a critical height of embankment from the punching shear mechanism to the soil arching mechanism. Therefore, in order to mobilize soil arching in pile-supported embankments, the embankments should be designed at least higher than the critical height. A theoretical equation to estimate the critical height could be derived by equalizing the vertical loads estimated by the load transfer mechanisms on the basis of both the punching shear and the soil arching. The derived theoretical equation could predict very well the experimental critical height of embankment.

Concrete track will be constructed in Gyungbu High Speed Railway II(GHSR II) stage construction site from Daegu to Busan. Concrete track is supported by substructure consisting of the original ground and embankment and does not allow the settlement of track because of its structural type. The embankment is composed of rock and soil mixture and settlement is feasible. So management of settlement of embankment is key point in successful construction of the concrete track. Compaction management of mixed fill materials is important in minimizing the settlement of embankment. In this study, in order to assess the compaction characteristics of mixed fill materials, large laboratory compaction tests were conducted. Mixed fill materials were obtained from two construction sites in GHSR II construction site. Modeled mixed fill materials having different rock type, fine content, maximum particle diameter, and moisture contents were prepared. From the test results, compaction characteristics of mixed fill materials were analysed.
