Background : Production of cytokines by bronchial epithelial cells may contribute to the local accumulation of inflammatory cells in patients with bronchial asthma. In many recent studies, molecular biological methods have been used to investigate the role of cytokines in pathogenesis and new therapeutic targets of asthma. Objective : We aimed to identify the dose-dependent inhibitory effects of Socheongryong-tang and Socheongryong-tang plus Sasam (Adenophorae Radix) on the mRNA expressions of Interleukin (IL)-6, IL-8 and granulocyte macrophage colony stimulating factor (GM-CSF) involved in the asthma model. Materials and Methods : In this study, BEAS-2B cell lines, human epithelial cells, were used. These cells were stimulated by tumor necrosis factor $(TNF)-{\alpha},{\;}IL-1{\beta}$ and histamine for artificial inflammatory expression. ${\beta}-actin$ messenger RNA (mRNA) was used for the internal standard. After each 24 hours of the Socheongryong-tang (小靑龍湯) and Socheongryong-tang plus Sasam (小靑 龍湯加沙蔘) treatment, total cellular RNAs were collected by applying RNAzol directly to the living cells. Then the transcriptional activities of IL-6, IL-8 and GM-CSF were measured by RT-PCR with electrophoresis. Results : In the Socheongryong-tang (小靑龍湯) study, the mRNA expressions of IL-6, IL-8 and GM-CSF were significantly inhibited compared to that of the control group (p<0.05). In the Socheongryong-tang plus Sasam (小靑龍湯加沙蔘) study, the mRNA expressions of IL-6, IL-8 and GM-CSF were significantly inhibited compared to that of the control group (p<0.05). Conclusions : This study shows that Socheongryong-tang (小靑龍湯) and Socheongryong-tang plus Sasam (小靑龍湯加沙蔘) have dose-dependent inhibitory effects on the mRNA expressions of IL-6, IL-8 and GM-CSF in human epithelial cells, so these herbal medicines may inhibit the inflammatory process of asthma. Advanced studies are required to investigate the mechanisms of inhibition by herbal medicine in the asthma model.

Objectives : Socheongryong-Tang (小靑龍湯, SCRT) has been widely used to treat respiratory disease. In this study, we investigate the acute toxicity and safety of fermented Socheongryong-Tang extract. Methods : To evaluate the acute toxicity and safety, 0 (control group), 1250, 2500 and 5000 mg/kg of Socheongryong-Tang and fermented Socheongryong-Tang extracts were orally administered to male and female ICR mice. After single administration, we observed survival rates, general toxicity, changes of body weight for the 14 days and autopsy. Results : Compared with the control group, we could not find any toxic alteration in all treated group (1250, 2500 and 5000 mg/kg). Conclusions : $LD_{50}$ of Socheongryong-Tang and fermented Socheongryong-Tang extracts might be over 5000 mg/kg and it is safe to ICR mice.

Objectives : The purpose of this study is to know the effect of Socheongryong-Tang on Dyshidrotic Eczema. Methods : We experienced one case of Dyshidrotic Eczema treated with Socheongryong-Tang. We have diagnosed the patient through the abdominal examination and have decided the treatment principle accordingly. We used visual analogue scale(VAS). Results : After the treatment the grade of VAS was decreased and clinical symptoms were gradually disappeared. Conclusion : Socheongryong-Tang have improved the signs and symptoms of Dyshidrotic Eczema case. It is concluded that Socheongryong-Tang is considerably effective on the treatment of skin disease that is related to rhinitis.

Objective : This study reports the effect of Socheongryong-tang on Dyshidrotic Eczema. Methods : This is a case report on a patient who has been suffering from Dyshidrotic Eczema. According to Diagnostic system based on Shanghanlun provisions, Socheongryong-tang was provided for 30 days. The severity of Dyshidrotic Eczema was evaluated by VAS and pictures. Results : When analyzing the patient's history and symptoms, it can be found in article No. 40 in Shanghanlun. The area and intensity of Dyshidrotic Eczema were reduced when viewed photos findings, so diagnosis and therapies showed valid results in Dyshidrotic Eczema. Conclusions : Socheongryong-tang is efficient to patient of this case report as a treatment.

Two cases of chronic sinusitis with asthma were treated by Socheongryong-tang for 8 weeks in Respiratory System Division, Department of Internal Medicine of Kyunghee Oriental Medical Center. Socheongryong-tang is herbal decoction that has been used as the traditional therapeutic agent for asthma. The author has observed two cases of chronic sinusitis with asthma. Treatment with Socheongryong-tang for 8 weeks didn't result in significant change in the symptoms of asthma, but chronic sinusitis improved without any side effects. This study suggests that Socheongryong-tang is an effective herbal decoction in the treatment of chronic sinusitis. Obviously, further research concerning this is still necessary.

Objectives: To investigate the scientific evidence of Korean Medicine (KM), papers on Socheongryong-tang (Xiaoqinglong-tang), which is frequently used in medical clinics or hospitals of Korean medicine, were collected and analyzed. Methods: Papers were classified by the registration of domestic or international journals, the year of publication, experimental models and the subjects of biological activities. The mechanisms of biological activity in accordance with therapeutic effects of Socheongryong-tang (Xiaoqinglong-tang) were noted. Results: Among 98 papers included, 21 were published in domestic journals whereas 35 were in Chinese journals and 43 in Japanese journals. Most reported biological activities were amelioration of asthma. Socheongryong-tang (Xiaoqinglong-tang) regulated interleukin and interferon and immunoglobulin, inhibited the production of nerve growth factor, endotheliln-1, nitric oxide, toll-like receptor-4, p-Akt and increased extracellular signal regulated kinase and cyclin D1, which led to decreased bronchi inflammation and bronchoconstriction, and inhibited the proliferation of airway smooth muscle cells, mucus secretion and airway hyperresponsiveness. In addition, Socheongryong-tang (Xiaoqinglong-tang) also restored tissues injured by asthma so that respiratory function recovered. Conclusions: Amelioration of asthma by Socheongryong-tang (Xiaoqinglong-tang) is supported by objective and scientific evidence.

Objectives : The purpose of this study to report the effect of Socheongryong-tang on solar urticaria. Methods : We treated a 26-years-old woman patient with Solar urticaria on the whole body with Korean medicine. After Korean medical treatment for 7 days, we have confirmed the improvement and disappearance of rashes, wheals, and itching. We recorded pictures of changes on symptoms. Results : After the treatment the grade of VAS was decreased. And rashes, wheals, itching were disappeared. Conclusions : Socheongryong-tang showed improvement in symptoms with solar urticaria. Thus, It is concluded that Socheongryong-tang is effective on the treatment of skin diseases such as solar urticaria.

BACKGROUND : Socheongryong-Tang(小靑龍湯, SCRT), a herbal medicine, has been widely used for the control of respiratory disease in Eastern countries. Recent years SCRT was known as anti-allergic agent. However, its therapeutic mechanisms, especially an inhibitory effect on inflammatory cell infiltration and airway remodeling in allergic asthma are unclear. METHODS : We investigated the effects of SCRT on levels of IL-4, and IFN-g using flow cytometric analysis and infiltration of inflammatory cells in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid(BALF) using cytospin methods in allergen-induced asthma. RESULTS : SCRT decreased levels of IL-4, a Th2-driven cytokine. But INF-g, a Th1-driven cytokine, was not changed. With SCRT treatment, infiltration of inflammatory cells showed reduced tendency. CONCLUSION : In conclusion, we demonstrated that regulation of Th1/Th2 imbalance may be one of mechanism contributed to reduction of inflammatory cell infiltration.

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of Socheongryong-tang, a traditional herbal medicine, on gastrointestinal (GI) motility disorders (inflammatory and diabetic models) in mice. Methods: The in vivo effects of Socheongryong-tang on GI motility were investigated by calculating percent intestinal transit rates (ITR) and gastric emptying (GE) values using Evans Blue and phenol red, respectively, in normal mice and in mice with experimentally induced GI motility dysfunction (GMD). GMD models were induced by acetic acid and streptozotocin. Results: In normal ICR mice, ITR and GE values were significantly and dose-dependently increased by the intragastric administration of Socheongryong-tang (0.0025~0.25 g/kg). The ITR values (%) of GMD mice were significantly lower than those of normal mice, and these reductions were significantly and dose-dependently inhibited by Socheongryong-tang. Conclusions: These results suggest that Socheongryong-tang is a good candidate for the development of a prokinetic agent that may prevent or alleviate GMD.

Objective : The purpose of this study was to report the improvement of a patient with tinnitus treated by herb-formulae medication based on Shanghanlun provisions. Methods : According to a disease pattern identification diagnostic system based on Shanghanlun provisions, a patient was diagnosed with Taeyang-byung, 40th provision and was administered Socheongryong-tang herbal medication for 45 days. The numeric rating scale (NRS) was used to estimate the response. Results : The NRS score changed from 10 to 0 and the tinnitus disappeared by 40th provision of Socheongryong-tang selected according to Shanghanlun provisions. Conclusions : This case report suggests that the two words in the 40^th provision of Shanghanlun, '表不解, 水氣'(exterior do not release, water qi) indicate a close relationship between economic difficulty and stuffiness of being in water, which affect tinnitus in this case.
