  • Purpose: Nitric oxide (NO) is a short-lived bioactive molecule that is known to play an important role in the pathogenesis of periodontal disease. In the current study, we investigated the effect of the flavonoid quercetin on the production of NO in murine macrophages activated with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) from Prevotella intermedia, a pathogen related to inflammatory periodontal disease, and tried to elucidate the underlying mechanisms of action. Methods: LPS was isolated from P. intermedia ATCC 25611 cells by the standard hot phenol-water method. The concentration of NO in cell culture supernatants was determined by measuring the accumulation of nitrite. Inducible NO synthase (iNOS) and heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) protein expression, phosphorylation of c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK) and p38, inhibitory ${\kappa}B$ $(I{\kappa}B)-{\alpha}$ degradation, and signal transducer and activator of transcription 1 (STAT1) phosphorylation were analyzed via immunoblotting. Results: Quercetin significantly attenuated iNOS-derived NO production in RAW246.7 cells activated by P. intermedia LPS. In addition, quercetin induced HO-1 protein expression in cells activated with P. intermedia LPS. Tin protoporphyrin IX (SnPP), a competitive inhibitor of HO-1, abolished the inhibitory effect of quercetin on LPS-induced NO production. Quercetin did not affect the phosphorylation of JNK and p38 induced by P. intermedia LPS. The degradation of $I{\kappa}B-{\alpha}$ induced by P. intermedia LPS was inhibited when the cells were treated with quercetin. Quercetin also inhibited LPS-induced STAT1 signaling. Conclusions: Quercetin significantly inhibits iNOS-derived NO production in murine macrophages activated by P. intermedia LPS via anti-inflammatory HO-1 induction and inhibition of the nuclear factor-${\kappa}B$ and STAT1 signaling pathways. Our study suggests that quercetin may contribute to the modulation of host-destructive responses mediated by NO and appears to have potential as a novel therapeutic agent for treating inflammatory periodontal disease.

  • This study investigates the antecedents of continuance intention of mobile SNS. In addition, it also explores the mediating role of perceived value in the relationship between the antecedent and continuance intention. This study posits that a social influence, perceived usefulness, privacy concern, and a perceived effort of use are major factors to influence continuance intention of SNS. By using a PLS analysis, this finding suggests that consumers' perception of the value of SNS which is previously overlooked, is a primary determinant of continuance intention, and the other exploratory factors are mediated through perceived value in cognitive aspect. This research aims to examine consumer's SNS continuance intention in terms of consumer's perspective, not just from the technology user perspective. Therefore, this research provides a useful guideline for marketing managers on how to manage Mobile SNS properly.

  • Recently, anti-fouling paints which does not include the poison components such as tin(Sn), copper(Cu) have been increasingly developed in order to inhibit the environmental contamination of the sea water. Moreover, the wear ratios of these anti-fouling paints are very important problem to prolong their life time in economical point of view. In this study, five types of anti-fouling paints as self polishing type were investigated on the relationship between their polarization characteristics and wear ratios. It was verified that there was apparently a good relationship between the wear ratio and polarization characteristics, for example, the wear ratio increased with increasing the impedance ratio, and increased or decreased with the corrosion potential shifting in the negative or positive direction respectively. In addition, the wear ratio decreased with decreasing the corrosion current density. Consequently, it is suggested that we can qualitatively expect the wear ratio by only measuring the polarization characteristics. Therefore, before the examination of the wear ratio was actually carried out in the field, the evaluation of polarization property in the laboratory may give a available reference data for their developments.

  • This paper is designed with the purpose of improving the efficiency of the sulfonic acid ion exchange membranes by radiation induced graft polymerization. It has been shown that the porous hollow fiber membranes could cause permeability blocking between pores and ion exchanged graft chains. Addition of crosslinker such as N-ethylene glycol dimethacrylate will permit to increase the permeation flux. In this research, the ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EDMA) and diethylene glycol dimethacrylate (DDMA) with different length are used as crosslinkers. The ion exchanged cross-linked membrane (EDMA, DDMA) containing sulfonic acid group by radiation induced grafted polymerization are sn died for adsorb metal ions (Pb). It has been shown that adsorbed metal ions ($Pb^{2+}$) for the EDMA and DDMA membranes with the density of sulfonic acid groups, 1.40 mmol/g and 2.14 mmol/g, respectively are 13.82 mg/g, 17.37 mg/g, accordingly.

  • The chemical characteristics of seed oils of Asian ginseng (Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer) at different ages grown in Korea (3, 4 and 5-year old) and China (5-year old), and American ginseng (Panax quinquefoliu L., 5-year old) grown in China were compared. Total fatty acid composition showed a significantly higher oleic acid content in American (87.50%) than in Korean (68.02~69.14%) and Chinese ginseng seed oils (61.19%). At the sn-2 position, the highest oleic acid (81.09%) and lowest linoleic acid (15.77%) were found in American ginseng seed oil. The main triacylglycerol species in ginseng seed oils were triolein (OOO) and 1,2-dioleoyl-3-linoleoyl-glycerol (LOO)/1,3-dioleoyl-2-linoleoyl-glycerol (OLO). In addition, the seed oils possessed an ideal oxidative stability showing 16.55~23.12 hr of induction time by Rancimat test. The results revealed that ginseng seed oil could be developed as a new healthy edible oil, and that the oil's chemical characteristics were strongly associated with the ginseng species and habitats.

  • Purpose: The Korean government has implemented a Barrier Free Certification System since 2008 to create a secure and convenient environment for the socially disadvantaged. The drastic increase in the number of BF-certification facilities is expected due to the revision of the system and increasing the number of certification institutions. An analysis of individual evaluation items needs to be made for the BF-Certification with public confidence. Method: Korean standard, International Standard(ISO/FDIS 21542, 2011), German Standard(DIN 18040-1, 2010), Austrian Standard(${\ddot{O}}NORM$ B 1600, 2017) and Swiss Standard(Norm SIA 500 / SN 521 500, 2009) were investigated and analyzed. A comprehensive improvement plan is proposed by comparing details of the aforementioned standards and the evaluation items of BF-Certification. Results: Many problems arise in applying existing Barrier-free standards due to changes in population structure, environmental change and the use of powered wheelchairs. International standards are being improved to solve these problems. The korean standards also require improving of the Barrier Free Law and Certification System, which reflect these trends. In korean cases, standards such as the size of the doors (width and height), the Unobstructed Manoeuvring Space and Clear Space at the Latch side of the Door are required to improve standards in accordance with international standards. In addition, the expression of laws and evaluation items of BF-Certification should be clearly defined. And the application of visual contrast standards for the enhancement of perceptions presented in international standards should be considered. Implication: Barrier Free related legal standards and evaluation items of BF-Certification that are used in Korea are required to be revised in consideration of social and environmental changes. Comprehensive improvements should be made through detailed review.

  • Recently, a self-camera that generates and distributes a large amount of moving images has been rapidly increasing due to the appearance of SNS such as Facebook, Instagram, and Tweet using mobile. In particular, the amount of SNS connections using mobile phones is significantly increasing in terms of usage, number of connections, and usage time. However, the use of a self-recording system using a smartphone by itself is extremely limited not only in terms of usage but also in frequency of use. In addition, the conventional unattended recording system is a very expensive system that automatically records and tracks an object to be photographed using an infrared signal. Therefore, this paper developed a low cost unmanned recording system using mobile phone. The system consists of a commercial mobile camera, a servomotor for moving the camera from side to side, a microcontroller for controlling the motor, and a commercial wireless Bluetooth earset for video audio input. And it is an unmanned automation system using mobile, and anyone can record image by self image tracking.
