  • The basalt fiber is expected to become a trend for industrial fibers as they have better properties of heat-resistant, non-combustion, absorbent, soundproof, moistureproof, lightweight, corrosion resistant, and high strength properties. Also, the fiber is found to be non-toxic and harmless to the human body. Therefore, in this study, we analyzed the chemical and mineral compositions of powdered sludge of basalt produced at seven sites on Jeju Island for the development of fire resistance insulating material for a building. The results showed that the basalt stone sludge is made from only sodium calcium aluminum silicate and ferridioside components unlike the basalt rock.

Long Term Leaching Characteristics of the Solidified Landfill Sludge (고화처리물(固化處理物)의 매립(埋立)에 따른 장기용출특성(長期溶出特性))

  • This study was carried out to investigate the leaching characteristics by the landfill of solidified sludge. pH of leachate was 3.7 - 5.8 and 8.0 - 10.4 in each column using sand as a top-soil layer on filled municipal waste and solidified cake. $NH_3$-N in leachate was increasing in the each column using sand as a top-soil layer on filled dewatered sludge and solidified cake, but decreasing in the each column using sand and solidified cake by top-soil layer on filled municipal waste. Also the concentration of $NO_3$-N was on the way of stabilizing but was difficult to find any tendency until now. Zn and Mn in leachates were the highest in the column filled with the solidified sludge, Cr, Pb and Cd were low concentration at each column.

Abundances of triclosan-degrading microorganisms in activated sludge systems

  • Triclosan is a synthetic antimicrobial agent used in numerous industrial and personal care products. Triclosan collected in wastewater treatment plants can be biodegraded up to 80%. However, little is studied about the abundances of known triclosan-degrading bacteria in activated sludge systems. A previous study reported that Sphingopyxis strain KCY1 isolated from activate sludge can cometabolically degrade triclosan. Recently, a quantitative PCR (qPCR) assay specific to strain KCY1 has been developed. Thus, this study investigated the abundance of strain KCY1 in three different activated sludge wastewater treatments using a qPCR assay. Additionally, ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB), known as triclosan-degraders, and amoA gene were quantified. Strain KCY1 were detected in activated sludge samples from three different wastewater treatment plants. The concentrations of strain KCY1 and AOB were on the order of $10^5-10^6$ gene copies/mL, while amoA gene concentration was on the order of $10^4$ gene copies/mL.

Effect of Alum Sludge Compost of Water Treatment Plant on the Growth of Korean Lawngrass (Zoysia japonica Steud.) (정수장 슬러지 퇴비가 한국잔디(zoysia japonica Steud)의 생육에 미치는 영향)

  • This experiment was carried our in order to study effect of alum sludge compost of water treat-ment plant on the growth of Korean lawngrass (zoysia japonica Steud.) and on the change of soil chemical properties. Alum sludge compost was made out of chicken feces, sawdust and alum sludge. The results obtained are summarized as follows : 1. Alum sludge compost was appropriate for organic fertilizer of turfgrass management in golf course. 2.Application of alum sludge compost improved the chemical properties of soil such as pH, available phosphorous and exchangeable calcium. Also the growth of Korean lawngrass grown by the mixed application of alum and compost was more effective than that in single application of compost. 3.Chlorophyll content of Korean lawngrass had no differences in several treatments. 4. Alum promoted the uptake of potassium, calcium and the yield of dry weight hut the yield of dry weight was not affected by chemical fertilizer. 5.Alumimum toxicity was decreased by the mixed application of alum and compost but increased by single application of alum.

  • The individual rotten water purification tank recently discharges wastewater and sewage through the outlet without purification ability. The outlet water and affiliated water purification tank with microorganism cultivator tank cultivates microorganism and then drops the value BOD, COD of sewage and discharges the quality of water into the outlet. The blower and water pump operating continuously prompts the waste of energy and deterioration of equipment. Each room of deposition tank, foaming tank, microorganism cultivator tank is equipment with the sludge detection senses so it can detect the density of each room. The power-drive plant of the blower and water pump which ate the system cultivating the microorganism must be made as fuzzy controlization (If the sludge amount of each room become higher, the rate of operation of blower and water pump must heighten, on the contrary, in case of row sludge amount, the total handling amount and microorganism handling amount of each room of control. Tank reducing the rate of operation must be DB. At present, the blower amount in proportion to the sludge and oxygen demanding amount has to control. Each mom must be checked outlet level of the outlet, also each room must flow backward discharge materials, and must operate feed-back control until we want to be come as a below value of BOD/COD(10PPM ; KS).

Importance of culture history on 17α-ethinylestradiol cometabolism by nitrifying sludge

  • $17{\alpha}-ethinylestradiol$ (EE2), a synthetic estrogen which interfere the endocrine and reproductive function in living organisms, has been found extensively to be deposited into municipal wastewater treatment plants and the environment via human excretion. EE2 has long been known to be efficiently cometabolized by ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) during ammonia ($NH_3$) oxidation. Current study aims to investigate the effect of culture history on the biotransformation of EE2 by nitrifying sludge which was enriched under different ammonia loading rates in continuous flow reactors. Result showed that past growth condition largely affected not only the metabolic rate of $NH_3$ oxidation but also EE2 cometabolism. Sludge previously acclimated with higher $NH_3$ loads as well as sludge dominated with AOB belong to high growth cluster (Nitrosomonas europaea-Nitrosococcus mobilis) showed higher rate of EE2 biotransformation than those one being acclimated with lower $NH_3$ loads because of its ability to provide more reducing power from $NH_3$ oxidation. Moreover, the correlation between the degradation rates of $NH_3$ and EE2 was higher in sludge being acclimated with higher load of $NH_3$ in comparison with other sludge. Implication of the findings emphasized the role of volumetric $NH_3$ loading rate in determining EE2 removal in wastewater treatment system.

Effect of Organic Acids Fermented from the Settled Sludge and Animal Organic Wastes on the Denitrification (침전 슬러지와 가축분의 유기산화 및 발효유기산이 탈질반응에 미치는 영향)

  • Fermentation efficiencies of organic wastes from the variety of sources were evaluated based on the production of total volatile acids(TVA) in batch reactor. Mixing and pH were not significant factors in producing TVA from the organic wastes. After a 10-day fermentation, final TVA concentrations in piggery, cattle, poultry, and primary settled sludge of domestic wastewater were 8,900, 2,900, 7,370 and 1,630 mg/L, respectively. The pH of organic wastes was decreased from neutral to 5.7. The ratio of TVA to $NH_4{^+}-N$ produced from the animal waste ranged from 11.5 to 30.1, whereas, that in the primary settled sludge of domestic wastewater, was 5.4. Possibility of fermented organic wastes as the electron donors for denitrification in the activated sludge was investigated. In both acclimated and nonacclimated activated sludge, higher denitrification rates were obtained with fermented piggery sludge added than with either methanol or acetate added. The fermented organic acids derived from the primary settled sludge gave the higher denitrification rate ($4.2mg\;NO_3-N/g\;vss{\cdot}hr$) in the acclimated activated sludge. Denitrification rate was $1.5mg\;NO_3-N/g\;vss{\cdot}hr$ in the nonacclimated sludge with the fermented acids from the primary settled sludge of domestic wastewater added.

  • Organophosphorus pesticides (OPPs) contents in the sewage sludge derived from the residential and industrial areas were determined in order to characterize contemporary organic contamination levels as a part of the ongoing development of the environmentally sound sewage sludge management strategy in Korea. OPPs were extracted from freeze-dried sludges in a ultrasonic extractor. The extracts were cleaned-up by florisil column and subsequently fed into gas chromatograph/nitrogen phosphorus detector (GC/NPD) for determining OPP contents. Diazinon, dimethoate, disulfoton, EPN, malathion, methyl parathion, parathion, phorate and sulfotep were present in the appreciable amount in the domestic sewage sludges.
